i am too busy/scattered for this to be a full-fledged fic but

robby going on his sabbatical no longer planning to actively kill himself but still suffering from depression (because we know his CPTSD and depression isn't a problem solved by a few conversations) and discovering that he still feels like this outside of the hospital except now he doesn't have the benefit of being distracted by work

he just has hours every day of driving and thinking and ruminating about every mistake he's made. recent ones, sure, like cutting every tie he could on his last day to ensure that no one would miss him when he died (as if it's that easy to undo). but older ones, too, like not noticing that langdon was an addict, like losing jake, like letting every relationship he's had end because he was too mentally ill to realize they were failing until they had actually failed

and even after the first night, when the sun is barely coming up over the horizon and he's pulling into a roadside motel outside of joliet, the ghosts of PTMC are creeping up on him, breathing down his neck and undoing whatever good was done by baby jane doe the night prior, because looking at the people he's saved gets outweighed every single time by the people he hasn't. he gets a shitty breakfast at a shitty diner and checks into the motel, planning on spending the next few days tooling around chicago and trying to get himself back on track, but his room is small and the air conditioning is loud and even with the blackout curtains pulled across he can't sleep because he's thinking about the men who have stayed in this room before and he's thinking how many of them have killed themselves in places just like this because continuing in this way, haunted by a thousand deaths including those he could have prevented if he had been faster or smarter or more knowledgeable, and---

when his phone rings, the screen lights up the dark room, and robby is sure it's a telemarketer until he fishes his reading glasses out of the saddlebag he's taken off his bike and realizes that it's jack. when he answers he finds jack looking up at him from the screen, harried and tired but grinning. jesus christ, you just sitting in the dark? he asks, and robby is so overcome by relief at the sound of his voice that it takes almost everything he has not to cry.

and it becomes routine. jack calls robby every morning and every night without fail, gives him a reason to wake up in the morning without the hospital and check on him before he heads into work, and on the nights where jack is off he gets parker to show him how to use zoom and he and robby have a real conversation, not just a check-in. and robby knows that jack is doing it to make sure that he doesn't throw himself off a cliff, but he doesn't care; it's so good to hear jack's voice and so good to know that there is one person in pittsburgh who wants him to come home.

occasionally when jack calls he'll pull in someone else who's standing nearby, and every time he does whoever is on the other end seems thrilled to see robby. trinity tries to bitch to him about al-hashimi before admitting begrudgingly that she's doing a good job; dennis reassures him that the house hasn't burnt down; mel updates him on how she's doing after the deposition and while he can tell that she's still scared, she seems steadier. even baran makes an appearance a few times, asking robby little administrative things and looking at him not with the anger or disgust that he's anticipated but as though she is genuinely interested in what he's saying.

the sabbatical turns less into robby finding a way to kill himself or finding a way to escape the hospital and more a way for him to realize that he needs to figure out how to co-exist with what the pitt requires and with what that means for the remainder of his life, and while it isn't the perfect solution jack, even from a distance, is able to provide a lifeline that robby didn't recognize he so desperately needed

one that understands that undoing toxic masculinity relies heavily on good, healthy depictions of male friendship where they are capable of talking to each other about their feelings and recognizing when their friends aren't doing well, where they can ask one another straight up if they are thinking about suicide and have it be a platonic expression of the love that they do inherently have for each other, and normalizing the idea that it is not gay/embarrassing/feminine for male friends to tell each other that they love each other

and one that LOVES the idea of two older guys with prior heterosexual relationships finding something deeply profound and romantic with one another and using that bond to pull each other back from the brink time and time again and understanding that while this is not the relationship that defined them in their younger years it is 100% the relationship that is going to define them for the rest of their lives

so obviously i love writing rabbot, and i love writing any kind of throuple involving rabbot because they are so inextricably linked to me that it's extremely hard to see their relationship as platonic, but in third place is jack/dennis because it is genuinely so fun to write

dennis hates being perceived and jack is ultra-perceptive; the age gap & the "this is my boss's best friend" is an excellent dynamic; they're both stockier dudes with bigger muscles which is also very good BUT

the best part is that they are similarly sensitive. jack is obviously deeply empathetic (his letter to the car crash veteran's family, falsifying the abortion record, "i'll pay for it") and dennis has proven several times now that he not only is extremely aware of the feelings of those around him but that he is also capable of listening to the women he works with and understanding his blind spots without taking a hit to his ego, which i feel like is something jack has picked up over the years as well (robby, too, but it is very hard to display that empathy when you're also literally about to kill yourself)

it's so fun to write a dynamic where both parties aren't bullshitting each other about anything because they are both too perceptive AND where they're both honest to goodness dweebs with shitty jokes

i have officially figured out the rest of impression

when i first started writing it back in january it was to keep myself motivated to finish my last novel -- one chapter of that, one chapter of impression, bada bing bada boom

as a result, i had planned it to be a lot shorter than it actually ended up being, with a clear outline: 12 chapters for semester 1, 12 chapters for semester 2, with an epilogue. that pretty rapidly went down the drain as i finished my novel & as i realized while season 2 was airing how fucking crazy i am for rabbot, plus how FUN it is to write jack & robby in this figuring-out stage of their relationship.

so the first semester ended up being the length of the entire planned fic, and i realized that some of the stuff i had planned for the second semester didn't resonate with what i had written for the first semester. a revamp was necessary. i also realized that i kept forgetting what song titles i'd used for chapters already so i had to figure that out too to make sure i didn't reuse them

i think the fic will end up better for this hiatus and restructure, and that people will enjoy what's coming. there are also one-shots on the way! the pace of output will slow a bit once i start working on my next-next novel, but that won't be until i find a publisher for the last one so we've got some time

In the dying days of World War II, Jack Abbot lays recovering in an English field hospital after losing his leg and being grievously injured by a shrapnel blast. His closest friend during his recovery is Dennis Whitaker, a Cambridge-educated doctor who offers Jack a lifeline as his military discharge approaches: coming to live on his sprawling family estate in the Moors. Jack readily accepts, only to find that the only other inhabitants of the decaying mansion are Michael Robinavitch, the standoffish and unfriendly caretaker of the estate, and Dennis's adopted sister, Trinity Santos, who is widely believed to be mad and responsible for a string of gruesome animal mutilations in the area.

As romance and tension build between Dennis, Robby, and Jack, long-buried family secrets begin to surface and Jack uncovers a dormant horror that should never have been brought to light.

i remembered yesterday while zoning out during meetings that i had a WIP from 2024 (long before i ever watched the pitt) about a grizzled WWII amputee falling in love with a British doctor who takes him to his remote family manor on the moors to recover and ends up entangled with his moody older groundskeeper... i am never going to finish the story as a novel because i've found a new muse in that field, but i can 100% finish it as a fanfiction...

no because it's so clear that jack deeply cares and loves robby. it doesn't matter if you ship them romantically or love them platonically that is just a fact.

jack at the end of season one telling robby that his therapist thinks he finds comfort in the dark.

time skip to s2 where jack is saying his first goodbye to robby and telling him to call him when it gets dark, he knows that robb's trip isn't a happy go lucky fun time, and he jack wants to be the one to be there for robby. he doesn't want robby to think that once he's driven off on his bike thst no one cares for him because jack always will.

then we get to their final goodbye where jack is telling robby that he has to find someone to dance through the darkness with him. ITS SO CLEAR THAT JACK IS TALKING ABOUT HIMSELF EVEN IF HE DOESN'T KNOW IT!!! jack reinforcing that he wants robby to come back that even after acting like a huge asshat he still wants robby to return after his sabbatical. also just can't forget about the emergency contact mention. need needed to remind everyone.

just a little headcanon robby was 100% the person who took care of jack after the passing of his wife. robby didn't let him suffer alone and made sure that jack didn't crawl into a hole that he wasn't able to crawl out of. and of course jack is trying to do the same for robby not out of obligation but because he knows what it's like to be at a low that feels like there is no other option except death and he also doesn't want to lose another person he loves deeply.

absolutely 100% this -- even if you do read it as platonic (and i do not look at my platonic friends like that sorry) these guys LOVE each other. and that's fantastic even if you don't ship them, because having two grown men have such obvious love and affection for each other is so different from the normal sort of friendship that is depicted on television.

even robby's relationship with duke, while newer and less deep, is a great portrayal of men being there for their friends and recognizing that they aren't mentally well. these are guys who know each other, who recognize their own darkness in each other, and are able to use that experience to pull each other out of it.
