It makes me devastated to imagine how much knowledge has been lost to humanity because of sexism. Imagine how many women in the 19th century would've been brilliant scientists, mathematicians, or doctors if only they were truly allowed to pursue these endeavours. Imagine all the discoveries they would've made.

This is not an issue that's been left in the past. A great part of young girls, even nowadays, are either forbidden or strongly discouraged from becoming scholars. Imagine what these girls could be doing! Imagine how many young Saudi girls have the potential to grow up and work to solve some of mathematics' biggest mysteries. Somali girls who could change medicine forever. Yemeni girls who could grow to be genius engineers and computer scientists.

Just imagine where we'd be as a society if women everywhere were allowed and encouraged to become academics.

This issue is very personal to me, as I am a girl who has always loved her academic pursuits.

I grew up in a household where being academically accomplished is encouraged. And I am SO thankful, because studying has been my greatest joy. I am so glad that when I was a kid, someone gave me science encyclopedias, math exercises, and history books, while telling me- "Go. LEARN!" Because filling my brain with chemistry, maths, physics, astronomy, biology, and every other nerdy thing you can think of, is something that provides me with such a great amount of personal fulfillment.

And I know that there are girls like me everywhere. I know for a fact there is a girl just like me right now living maybe in Pakistan, or Syria, or Yemen, who would find so much joy in learning. I know she would fall in love with solving complex math problems, doing chemistry experiments, and absorbing all the knowledge her brain possibly could. But she will never experience this type of joy. She will never experience this type of fulfillment. Because she will be married off. Maybe at 9, maybe at 12, or perhaps even at 16. She will have her life filled with domestic responsibilities, and will not find personal fulfillment.

not 2 exaggerate but the good place’s thesis of “if the modern pressures of life were removed, we would inherently seek out opportunities to learn and become better and kinder people” is a more interesting and valuable thing to say about society than anything that’s ever been said about cell phones

Work shouldn't make up most of a person's life, nor other pressures of the modern world. Forcing people to dedicate most of their lives to work to survive while many live in absolute luxury ruins the potential of mankind to make worthwhile connections and make this world a better place

Transport in capitalism

Something people tend to overlook, in my opinion, is the effect of transport fees on the social mobility of low income households. Transport can cost a lot yet is absolutely necessary in the modern world. It's hard to find a job that is at walking distance from your house, so chances are you'll need to look farther away. You can't really do that without transport, you can't get a job that is farther away from your house than walking distance without transport. Yet train tickets, tube tickets, taxi fares, gas, car costs and many other forms of transport cost a lot. One ticket might not be a lot, but the cost will build up over time. If you don't have the money to pay for those costs, your chances at getting "higher up" in life are diminished because the area you can effectively get to is small.

Here in the Netherlands we have a system in place that makes sure public transport is 'free' for students (if you fail at getting your diploma, you'll have to repay all transport costs). I love this system, it makes it possible for me to study in the bigger cities at universities that actually offer me what I need. Without this system I would have to pay 100 euro a week to get to school. I can't afford that, and many others can't as well. We have it good here in the Netherlands but many countries don't have a system like that. This means that many people might not be able to pursue a higher education because of the transport costs.

This means that not only are your job opportunities limited, so are your possibilities of getting an education that can help make you "competitive on the labour market".

The freedom of movement should not be restricted because of lack of money.

The concept of illegal immigration really baffles me. You were born on the other side of an imaginary line that we've drawn on a map, so now you aren't allowed in a part of Earth without going through bureaucratic processes that aren't always fair. Western governments really snapped when they restricted access to their countries from people of poorer, marginalised countries yet have full access to those countries and often exploit those countries and trample all over them
