Funniest thing in the world to me (and by funny i mean exhausting) is people whose reaction to the textual pesach and purim story is that the jews were the ones commiting genocide. No, fighting back against persians who wanted to kill jews was not genocide. No, egyptians dying to literal acts of god was not genocide.
So many political posts I hate boil down to "I don't want to organize and work with people I hate and fight for small, incremental victories, I just want to start a revolution where everyone magically becomes an automaton who acts exactly the way I think they should act"
Like damn man, I want that too. Unfortunately I live in reality though so we're stuck with the first thing.

This whole line of thinking comes down to "the current systems and leadership are bad. What we need is a fresh start with only people who are good, and then all the systems will be good". Which is simply not how anything has ever worked!

I kind of do think "this is not who we are, we need to live up to our democratic heritage" is a winning message in a way "america is basically and fundamentally evil. fuck you all" isn't

Queerness isn't inherently political, actually, it's politicized. I think that distinction carries weight because we often paint ourselves as a sign of a progressive society. But we predate progression and regression. We have always existed. The presence of queerness is primeval, part of the natural state of a species, even removed from our current position standing on the shoulders of giants. We just *are.* Which makes any action against queerness, any cultural upheaval against our expression, that more clearly absurd.
The online left heard the slogan "everything is political" and interpreted it exactly as you'd expect. No actual reflection over what you're actually implying when you're describing an intrinstic aspect of identity or sexuality as essentially political, instead of intrinsically personal.
Namely that queerness doesn't really come from within at the end of the day, but that it's primary and fundamental characteristic is a political one - and you know, there is already a political movement that agrees with this - it's the anti-LGBTQ movement. Good job doing a 180 on "being gay isn't a choice", I'm sure they're thrilled to hear it.
Might as well say that my fingers are political, which I guess would imply that their very existence and function is predicated on something other than the fact that they're, you know. My fingers. Their function and origin can't be "political", because then political doesn't fucking mean anything.
We have many leftists now treating "queer" as more of a political orientation than a personal identity, to the point that some people will straight up tell somebody they disagree with over economics or foreign policy that they're "not queer anymore". That's not how that works. You sound just as queerphobic as your RW asshole parents when you treat queerness as an extrinsic political identity, something you can unilaterally assign or revoke from others at your whim. If you don't respect the queerness of people you disagree with, you don't respect queerness.
Tankies like to talk about how Marx, Lenin, and Trotsky were Jewish or had some Jewish heritage to support their crackpot idea that Communism has always been amazing for Jews. Their understanding of those figures' Judaism is incredibly surface-level, however, because they fail to understand that the Jewish partial-architects of Communism were deeply self-hating, and I don't mean anti-Israel, I mean antisemitic.
Karl Marx effectively renounced Judaism altogether, married a gentile woman (on whom, I might add, he dumped every bit of domestic labor while he drank and navel-gazed), and wrote an incredibly antisemitic essay called "On the Jewish Question" where he rebutted someone else's antisemitism by saying that "practical Judaism" was "huckstering and money," that "the Christians have become Jews," and that humankind needed to be emancipated from this so-called "practical Judaism."
Lenin, who had a single Jewish grandmother, insisted that Jews needed to assimilate in order to have a utopian Communist society and that Jewish persecution in Eastern Europe was their own fault for remaining a separate community. As far as I know, he did not routinely interact with Jews.
Trotsky is arguably the only Jewish figure in early Communism to have considered antisemitism an undeserved and extrinsic evil, and even he considered it largely a Tsarist evil. He changed his name from Bronstein to a "revolutionary" one. At one point, he said that he was a Bolshevik, not a Jew, and he even considered rejecting a position in the Communist government because he thought that there shouldn't be too many Jews in high positions. (The "Judeo-Bolshevik" stereotype was based on him, not on an actual environment friendly to Jews.) The party also turned on him when he started speaking out against Stalin, and he was eventually killed with an ice pick to the head while in exile.
Your precious Marxism has never, ever been built around fighting antisemitism, nor has it been a safe place for Jews. You only have to look up the Doctors' Plot, "rootless cosmopolitans," and banning of Hebrew and Jewish culture to know that.

One of the most insane currently popular flavors of antisemitism has got to be the “how dare you evil Jews steal our sacred Christian/Muslim theology/culture/holy sites and bastardize them for your nefarious (((Zionist))) purposes” when the theology/culture/holy sites in question are all in fact taken from Jewish religion, tradition, and culture. This bizarre belief that Judaism belongs to everyone but the Jews.
My favorite is the map telling everyone to use the "real" "pre-colonization" names of various cities in Israel. And they're all either new names for cities that have been there for thousands of years... or the same exact name, but in Arabic.

i know it's been said but it bears repeating in the wake of NYC elections, the NYC Jewish Woman, Dan Goldman, and Scott Wiener, and the upcoming midterms:
many jews experience debates about israel as directly affecting jewish life because other people often collapse the distinction for us. take the woman who was assaulted on a NYC subway while her attacker said "jews are eating kids," or Dan Goldman the rep of the 10th district in NYC who was publicly lambasted by a local coffee shop for getting coffee there, or Scott Wiener a California state legislator who was harassed by masked people at a pride march. the woman on the subway wasn't attacked because of anything she had personally said or done regarding israel. goldman had only gone into the coffee shop because his daughter needed to use the restroom and bought a coffee as a thank you. wiener is a gay jewish legislator with a solid track record of defending trans rights who had the gall to appear at a trans rights event.
the woman was attacked because she was jewish in public, goldman was harangued for being being jewish with a public platform, and wiener was chased out of the event for being jewish. and people projected the actions of the israeli government onto them. (and before people start saying 'well goldman and wiener are pro-israel politicians!' i implore you to take a look at their voting record and see just how run of the mill democrat they actually are on the topic)
incidents like these make it difficult for many jews to treat israel as merely a foreign policy issue, because public attitudes toward Israel often become attitudes toward jews in practice.
that's why i find it concerning when israel becomes a defining issue in politics. when jewish voters raise concerns about rhetoric surrounding israel, many of us aren't asking people to adopt our views on the conflict. we're trying to explain why certain language and political choices have consequences for jewish life at home.
