I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area they’ve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record I’m fine with

But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. They gave us a cowboy

You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

Ok I replied and then realised I remembered it wrong, so here goes. This woman called Crystal wasn’t pretending to be in a relationship with Dominic Monaghan like I thought, she was selling fan art that was obviously just bad photoshops of him and Billy Boyd with fake autographs on them. Fandom_wank existed to make fun of things on fandom communities on livejournal because LJ banned communities like that so they’d be hosted on journalfen or darkjournal instead. A thread got started about Crystal, she didn’t give in despite how obviously fake the art was, and to defend herself she posted a bad photoshop of Dominic Monaghan lying on her bed that was so obviously just his head pasted on someone else’s body. Someone commented, “My head is pastede on yay” and that’s where that comes from. The thread went on forever, it had everything you could want in livejournal drama - fake friendships, lies, fake art, plagiarism, drama about fucking over REAL artists, it was brilliant and it came to be known as Crystal Wank. We were a simple people.

You may begin to wonder how you've never perceived the pixies' presence prior, but ignorance can be bliss. Sometimes it is best to turn a blind eye, for their morals are not our own.

There is a warning that Paragonian parents pass along to their children, in the form of a rhyme recited at bedtime or sung while skipping rope:

Among the southern mangrove swamps Awash in crystal's ancient glow, There is music deep in the wood Pulsing with the river's flow; In the moonlight the pixies romp And dance and sing among the lights Of false-guiding flames off the path Revealing Arkaydian nights. Do you have any Mulder/scully thoughts? I think I’m just eternally depressed they never get like any kind of happy ending but I was curious since you wrote an x files thing in the morgue files. Thanks so much

Mulder and Scully are the reason I am in fandom at all and why I started down this terrible dark path to writing fan fiction, so in many ways, they owe me and my entire family financial compensation.

(Apart from this, they remain the sexiest, most tense, engaging relationship I've watched depicted on television. This show gave birth to the term shipper as a shortened version of "relationshipper;" it's tagline was "smart is sexy." It inspired a generation of girls to go into STEM. Agent Scully dug through corpses, ran in heels, stared down a man a solid foot taller than her on a short day, and was at the same time silly and petty and human. Mulder was brilliant and fucked up and wanted, desperately, at every moment to tell Scully everything interesting and weird he found, and he liked how she fought him every step of the way. These people lived in normal looking apartments, drove uninspired cars, were unashamedly smart, and their intimacy was the product of both faith in one another, absolute mutual respect, and the undeniable frisson of wanting to fuck each other's brains out and/or beat them out of each other's skulls with a hammer. So many of the great writers and producers in television you know today learned their craft on the X-FIles. Vince Gilligan used to be a fan favorite writer because he liked to make Mulder and Scully flirt. Bad Blood is one of the best episodes of television ever made, an absolute ego-free romp that's so funny and weird and leans so deeply into the gimmick of the X-Files. Paper Hearts is a devastating exploration of the necrotic grief of loss when you keep opening the wound with hope. Home was banned from television after being aired once because it was about an incest family run by an armless, legless stump mom-sister-girlfriend-aunt-all-the-above who lived on a skateboard under the bed and her wildly inbred pack of sons-brothers-husbands-uncles-baby-daddies. There was also an episode written by David Duchovny -- who, and I cannot stress this enough, was most of his way through his PhD in English Literature at Yale -- about Negro League Baseball where an alien falls in love with the sport that made me cry like a bitch and also permanently integrated the phrase, "I bet the air in my mouth tastes better than that," into my vocabulary. I exchanged actual legal American tender to watch the second X-Files movie in a theater, and the only weird thing about the experience was that I was somehow not the only person in it. I am ride or die X-Files. When I eat it sky write I WANT TO BELIEVE with my ashes.)

Do you have any tips on getting better at writing? I’m always amazed on how real your stories feel, both in atmosphere setting and realism (within reason) and also in how you write feelings in a way that feels like getting punched in the gut lmao

This is the best advice anybody can give you, but it's not fun and it's shitty to execute: the only way to get better at writing is to write a lot.

I'm not going to say that there aren't people who have a better intuitive capability at writing than others, but no matter how much innate talent someone may have, nothing will ever take the place of the journeyman grind of writing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of pages. From the first story I ever wrote to the last one I churned out, the difference is immense -- and while yes, I've grown in experience, vocabulary, literary reference and maturity, the only way I was able to deploy those new tools and refinements was by continuously throwing myself bloody against the brick wall of writing yet another story.

The best way to be a good writer is to be a bad writer for a very long time, in essence, and to be able to grit your teeth through that process. That last part, the endurance sport of it, that's the thing a lot of people can't do; even once you're a quote-unquote good writer, writing doesn't get much easier, because you hold yourself to a higher standard, and chipping blood out of the rock of your frontal lobe so your story can have a climax is the same agonizing process it's ever been -- regardless of how you avoid thesaurus abuse these days.

Re: the realism and atmosphere, I regret to send you to Elon Musk's twitter, but I wrote a long thread about my process there years ago, which now I'm thinking I should probably transcribe into Tumblr at some point.

Introducing: the Pixie Orb & the Pixie Felyve 🔔 🍄 🩷

For this month, we’re featuring one of Kaylune’s more special, whimsical colors: Pixie! Orbs are items that players can use to transform their pets. While some orbs simply change a pet’s coat to a different shade, you may find that other orbs have a greater effect on your pet’s appearance:

The Pixie Orb hums with the magic of fairy circles and whispered bargains. It drifts along, beckoning pets into ethereal mushroom rings with the chime of unseen bells. Some seek it purposefully, drawn in by promises of wonder and delight. Others wander in too close, or find themselves caught in the whim of a passing fae, transformed by chance alone.

Whether by fate or fortune, a pet touched by this magic will return changed. Pixie pets dance through life with ringing laughter and clever tricks, a hint of the otherworldly in their step.

Pixie pets bloom endless with joy and whimsy, making them a rather popular companion. Some cities, however, do not meet their magical presence with kindness:
