Meet Hadeel and the Mikki Family

Hadeel Mikki is a computer science graduate, a web developer, and a mother. She graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza and, before the war, worked as a freelancer. She and her husband Waseem have two daughters, Mira and Nadia, and a baby son, Labeeb. On Oct. 7th, the first night of the conflict, their home was damaged in an airstrike. They evacuated, and not much later their former home was completely destroyed.

Since then, their family has known nothing but hardship. Waseem lost his aunt and uncle and their family of five in another airstrike, and his father, Labeeb, grew sick with grief. Without medical care, he passed away not long afterwards. His loss has hit the family hard, especially Mira, the oldest daughter, who is old enough to miss her grandfather but not old enough to understand why she can’t see him anymore.

Hadeel and her family are now trapped in central Gaza, paying to rent a single room, and struggling to afford the exorbitant, ever-rising cost of essentials: food, water, medicine, and clothes for the girls and the baby.

Our goal is to help them as much as we can with what we can. If they are able to raise €20,000 to €35,000, Hadeel could afford passage to bring her family out of Gaza and into Egypt, and every smaller amount raised is helping them survive and keep hope for a day when they can once again know peace.

Hey hey, as a librarian, can I just say don’t pace yourself at the library. I get a lot of customers saying “oh I shouldn’t get too many books out at once” but like you should!!!! Max out your card, take everything we have on a subject you’re interested in, make a book fort in your home. We love that shit! It doesn’t matter if you read them or not; just take them for an adventure and bring them back whenever they’re due!

For public libraries, one of the ways we secure funding year to year is lending. Governments don’t want to fund more books if they’re not being used and the way we measure use is by issues. Regardless of whether you read it or not, whether you have it for a day or a month, if you issue it to your library card, we get the stats! It makes the library look good!

Help your local library; get books out even if you know you can’t read them all!

Listen, if a Bad President can come in and take away our rights and we're dependent on a Good President replacing them in four years to give us back our rights, then we do not have any rights.

If politicians can take or distribute them, then they're not "inalienable" and they're not "rights."

We don't have inalienable rights we have conditional privileges, divvied out according to the whims of whoever currently holds the reins.

And if we want to have actual rights, then we must build a system in which no one has the power to take them away to begin with.
