I've been wanting to get a new dog for the past few months (a Norwegian Elkhound to be exact)

Does anybody have any special-interest™ level knowledge on them, or at least similar breeds? I've done some research but it all just boils down to the same generic information that you need for all dogs (exercising, mental stimulation, training, etc)

There's not a lot of breed-specific information on them aside from them not being great off leash, which I'm fine with!

I mean this is probably way too late but someone might find it useful. All this info is sourced from I grew up with one. It's not exhaustive by any stretch and as my mom trained ours fairly well (I think a year of puppy classes and them another year of training classes after that.) there may be a few bits that are lacking.

Accurate on the don't trust them off leash. Our elkhound knew what come meant, but only came if she felt like it. Her down and stay was also mediocre.

They are very barky dogs even when well socialized. So as a dog that alerts to anyone at the door, very useful, but they also bark when they're having fun playing or feel like it or get excited. Closer to a small dog's tendency to bark.

They can be very possessive of food and resources. She got much worse about it when she got older. Not sure if that was the going blind part or not recognizing us as easily which still might be tied into going blind.

Their ability to chew is nuts. She regularly reduced hard nylabones to stubs. I think the generic dog advice now is don't let them chew on real hard stuff, but im not sure how many chew toys she would have gone through had we not had those hard nylabones.

If you live anywhere without a standard 4 season cycle then they're shedding all the time. They require lots of brushing but honestly she only rarely needed a bath. Can get slightly stinky but nowhere near the level of stinkier dog breeds. Their coat is thick enough mind the possibility of heat exhaustion. Also it can hide injuries.

Excercise, they're bred to be a hunting dog albeit very different from the retreivers and others. They need serious excercise and one moseying walk a day isn't going to cut it.

Also she pulled a lot even with all the training courses she got. Switching to a head collar made a huge difference.

They're only supposed to be 35 to 45 pounds so they're a nice medium dog size and with the curled tail they don't kill your calves from wagging. She didn't really lick much but don't know if that's breed specific or just her.

They understand tag in a way no other dog i've met does. Most dogs play keepaway with a bone or toy. Our elkhound played keep away with her body. Little me would chase her around the table and try to touch her. She enjoyed the game immensely and would move just enough so my hand missed her.

This is poorly recalled cause it was something like 20 years ago, but she started going blind, had trouble getting up on any non carpeted floor and also had bouts of not recognizing us as she aged. She lived to about 13.

I put together a relatively short survey (about two dozen questions, mostly multiple choice, all optional) to get some data on what fic lengths and completion statuses readers on AO3 prefer or avoid. If I get enough answers to have a good sample size, it should give us some insight into how people search and read on the archive.

If you find this interesting, feel free to share it with AO3 users elsewhere or post it to other platforms. I'd like to get a good crossection of readers that isn't biased by platform, if at all possible.

The survey is just for fun/curiosity, and isn't associated with any university, company, or other entity. It's just me asking you this stuff here :)

I'm not putting a deadline on this, I'll just let it run until I've got some good numbers, but whenever I do have enough I'll post the results here. You can track this post to watch for that update.

Instead of reblogging another "20 steps to make Windows less hostile (until the next update)" post, I'm just. Going to drop the Linux Mint installation guide. Which is less than 20 steps.

The first thing you'll do is create a USB that lets you test Linux without in any way damaging your current set up, so I encourage anyone who's loathing of Windows is ever growing to give it a try. You have nothing to lose but a little time.

It's also a way to give an older computer new life, since it's generally Windows bloatware slowing your system down, not your computer's actual hardware.

I normally don't like to talk about current events here, but I seriously believe that this needs to be addressed! The Dinosaur Valley State Park in Texas is in huge danger of having an AI data center being build near the park. The byproducts of AI facilities that poisons the air, uses up the water, pushes up electricity, and harmfully impacts the animals, plants, and people living nearby. Even worse, the request to postpone the operation has been denied by Texas courthouses. But, it's not too late yet! If you care so much in preserving the paleontological site, its ecosystem, and to help the people of Glen Rose TX, then please sign the petition in the link up above. Dinosaur Valley State Park is one of the few places where you can walk the same path as the prehistoric animals did millions of years before you, and I'll be seriously devastated if the unethical facility gets build there.

And if anyone sees this post, then I highly encourage you to reblog it so that way more people can learn about what's about to happen near Dinosaur Valley State Park. The more awareness about this petition, the better are in chances to save the dinosaur valley before it's too late. Let's protect this amazing park!

UPDATE: Ever since I've created this post, the petition to save Dinosaur Valley State Park has raised up to at least nearly 7,500 signatures! More and more people are voicing their opposition on putting a data center within Glen Rose Texas. The residents there are totally against on establishing an unethical building that'll not only destroy the fossil trackway and the natural environment, but also be very harmful to their health sake too. I'm blazing this post to give the people of Glen Rose the fighting chance in persevering their amazing park. Losing the trackways will be a travesty, and I'm not about to give up in saving a part of Earth's ancient past. Let's keep that momentum growing!
