Iâve said this before and Iâll say it again but it is absolutely an example of civilizational inadequacy that only deaf people know ASL
âoh we shouldnât teach children this language, it will only come in handy if they [checks notes] ever have to talk in a situation where itâs noisy or they need to be quietâ
My mom learned it because she figured sheâll go deaf when she gets old
My family went holiday SCUBA diving once, and a couple of Deaf guys were in the group. I was really little and I spent most of the briefing overcome with the realization that while the rest of us were going to have regulators in our mouths and be underwater fairly soon, they were going to be able to do all the same stuff and keep talking.
The only reason some form of sign language is not a standard skill is ableism, as far as I can tell.
For anyone interested in learning, Bill Vicars has full lessons of ASL on youtube that were used in my college level classes.Â
https://www.youtube.com/user/billvicars
and hereâs the link to the website he puts in his videos:
https://www.lifeprint.com/
Update: you guys this is an amazing resource for learning asl. Bill Vicars is an incredible teacher. His videos are of him teaching a student in a classroom, using the learned vocabulary to have conversations.
Not only is the conversation format immersive and helpful for learning the grammar, but the students make common mistakes which he corrects, mistakes I wouldnât have otherwise know I was making.
He also emphasizes learning ASL in the way itâs actually used by the Deaf community and not the rigid structure that some ASL teachers impose in their classrooms
His lesson plans include learning about the Deaf community, which is an important aspect of learning ASL. Knowing how to communicate in ASL without the knowledge of the culture behind it leaves out a lot of nuances and explanations for the way ASL is.
Lastly, his lessons are just a lot of fun to watch. He is patient, entertaining, and funny. This good natured enthusiasm is contagious and learning feels like a privilege and not a chore
And itâs all FREE. Seriously. If youâve ever wanted to learn ASL
Honestly the best part of being a barista was charging cops for their drinks. They're so used to getting free shit so it was SOOOOO good for them to pull up to the window and for me to be like "$6.47 :)" and them to make this whole elaborate display of slowly pulling their wallet out and handing their card over bc they weren't expecting to pay. I'd charge you double if I could, oink oink bitch
genuinely worst part of food service was being forced to give cops a discount. never have i experienced bootlicking so bad until i had a manager breathing down my neck abt this
Yeah my stupid shift supervisors would make me if they saw but if they DIDNT see then it's fair game, baby
LMAO one time in the beginning of the pandemic, I gave an ICU nurse from the hospital across the street a free latte and upgraded it to a large for her. The cop behind her looked so smug and sure that I was gonna give him a free drink but only productive members of society get free things from me :)
i feel strongly that adults should wait and listen to children when they stammer and go off on tangents because they have important things to say! and they are literally actively in that moment developing their capacity for speech the least you can do is wait for them to finish instead of interrupting them or pretending theyâre done talking
as a physically disabled person I'm used to people only noticing accessibility issues if they break their leg or are otherwise temporarily disabled. so this disability pride month I'm proud to be partnering with this baseball bat...
like i think that psych wards are fundamentally violent because the process of incarceration is fundamentally violent. even if itâs just for a few days, a few weeks, a monthâit is still violent to be locked up, deprived of community, and legally unable to say no to what happens to you in there. and in the United States, I think the voluntary/involuntary designations are really useless, because how can there be meaningful consent if you can consent to go in but canât consent to leave? how can there really be meaningful consent when your options are âyou decide to go to the psych ward or we force you to go to the psych ward.â And if you do go in voluntarily, the threat of involuntary commitment is always there and is often weaponized by doctors to get you to do what you want. I cannot count the amount of times me and fellow patients were told that if we didnât agree to something, theyâd just go to court and make us do it anyway.
i see people talking sometimes, about how not all psych wards are bad. when they say that they mean that not all psych wards are abusive, use solitary confinement, physical restraints, drugging without consent, or use strip searchs. But I really think people need to understand that it is not just those horrifically abusive things that make a psych ward violent; the whole fucking practice of incarceration makes a psych ward violent in a very real sense.Â

Van Gogh actually painted Starry Night while receiving treatment in a hospital for his depression. In fact, most, if not all, of his most successful paintings were done while he was receiving treatment of some sort. When he wasn't, he often couldn't bring himself to get out of bed at all, let alone paint.
A bit oversimplified perhaps, but the upgrade you're looking for is likely treatment.
