As a parent, surrounded by other parents (and my mom used to confide in me ALL THE TIME when I was kid, and sometimes I think it was parentification), it blows my mind how radical people seem to think it is that my parenting style is basically "my kids are people. What, as people, do they need?"
I was looking for a new school for my kid because their previous school had a couple teachers who were not treating them appropriately, and I had a brief conversation with the principal of one of the district schools they might be eligible for. I mentioned that, since my kid was the one most impacted by the decision, that my kid would make the final call. Mostly because I knew almost nothing about any of those schools besides reputation, and throwing darts blindfolded would be just as effective as far as I could tell. She said "no, you're the parent, you know better than your kid, you need to make the decision."
Yeah, that school didn't make the list. In the end, my kid decided being homeschooled would be the best fit, so that's what we did. And it worked out fine.
But WHY is treating my kids like they're humans who need to be respected as humans mean I get the worried side-eye from every other parent I know? My kids are great kids, why do I have to stifle that?
