i love naruto because if you’re interested in the relationship between naruto and sasuke it’s a great story. and if you’re not it’s kind of a terrible story

ive seen people critique this as if kishimoto is stupid and didn’t know it was a story about sasuke and naruto’s relationship and i think that’s dumb. he’s said himself that when he came up with the original idea it had limited depth and absolutely no legs until sasuke was added. naruto is the protagonist, but the story wouldn’t work without sasuke, who is the driving force of the series and of naruto himself.

naruto hates sasuke, he loves sasuke, he wants to have sasuke, he wants to be sasuke, he wants to kill sasuke, he flies into an animalistic rage when sasuke is threatened, he stays up all night worrying about sasuke, he cries over him. every new character and obstacle is a chance for him to reflect on sasuke. almost everyone tells naruto to give up, that sasuke does not return his feelings, sasuke is evil and crazy and needs to die. but naruto continues to steadfastly believe that it doesn’t matter, he and sasuke share a special bond. he will do whatever it takes to get through to sasuke, to save him, and if he can’t save him, if sasuke is determined to torture himself forever, naruto will kill them both. and that’s awesome.
