Someone has definitely tackled the communism in the 80’s in a fic. The Vocabulary of Exile by thesevenpercent is really good. It is heavy on the communism though. Definitely not like a fun cheesy 80’s vibe. They put so much research into the fic and a lot of it is explained in the chapter notes if you’re into that.
