Gen 1 and 2 are excluded from this because they’re basically the same gen and the originals.
Gen 3, other than having no connectivity with Gen 1 or 2, was solid in terms of story and gameplay, and had good graphics and music. And FRLG remade Gen 1 while adding features.
Gen 4 had Platinum and HGSS which saved the gen but OG Sinnoh was still bad especially with the game’s speed (saving a lot of data, anybody?) and surfing in these games was less but MUCH more tedious than Gen 3, plus the sheer amount of HMs made traversing the region a bore.
Gen 5 was where Pokemon peaked and sadly fans weren’t ready for it because of the new Pokemon designs. The story was top notch and it managed to balance competitive play and main game, and had many good features. The only flaw was some of the Pokemon designs.
Gen 6 was a massive step down especially in terms of story and Kalos as a region was WAY too easy, and they give you a full team for free. And Kalos was also clearly rushed and boring in terms of its map and there were very little new Pokemon introduced. ORAS and Megas redeemed Gen 6, but still ORAS removed the battle frontier.
Gen 7 was the same as Gen 5, but not as good because the difficulty was still easy but at least more of a challenge than XY. Z moves were unnecessary but you could still use megas. And Alola’s map was quite small but at least more varied than XY.
Gen 8 is basically Gen 6 without any of its redeeming qualities, an even worse story, even less Pokemon, half the features cut, and represents throwing the franchise away in the name of easy cash.
