+ his connection to the unseelie king
okay i’m always talking about how i’m sure kit’s mother is a faerie and he’s half-fey and that he could possibly be the unseelie king’s grandson and i’ve never really made a post about why i think that and i have a lot of free time right now. i’ll talk about all the hints we’ve gotten in lord of shadows, some info cassie has given us, the GOTSM novellas and why i think he is the grandson of the unseelie king… LET’S GET INTO IT!
so faeries can have human lovers, that’s old news. we’ve had an entire novella dedicated to the story of andrew blackthorn and lady nerissa. since johnny spent most of his time at the shadow market, he would’ve dealt with faeries, causing him to meet kit’s mother! i don’t know how they became intimate, it might’ve been the same way andrew met nerissa so it would parallel with that.
cassie has been hyping up kit’s mother rather a lot and it’d be pretty underwhelming if it turns out that kit’s mother was a mundane (or a shadowhunter) so i don’t think we should worry about that. cassie herself has said that kit’s mother is a significant mystery.
now there were a lot of hints about kit’s mother being faerie in lord of shadows.
I’m quite sure that kit’s mother isn’t dead by the way, for those of you who think she is.
“What about your mother? Was she a Shadowhunter too?”
“I don’t think so,” Kit said. His father had sometimes told him his mother was a Vegas showgirl who’d taken off after Kit was born, but it had occurred to him in the past two weeks that his father might not have been entirely truthful about that. He certainly hadn’t been about anything else. “She’s dead,” he added, not because he thought that was likely the case but because he realized he didn’t want to talk about her.
“So we both have dead mothers,” Ty said.
i don’t know about you but this conversation made we optimistic about the fact that his mother is alive. it’s just the irony of it, it’s part of the plot!
the hints i’ll show you will not only show you why i think kit’s mother is a faerie but how they tie into why i think kit is the unseelie king’s grandson.
“Eochaid stood arrested, his eyes glittering behind the holes of his mask. The irises, too, were bronze-colored. “I know you,” he said. “I know your face.”
this is pretty heckin significant because those words stick with kit later on in the chapter as they repeat in his head.
so this really supports the unseelie king grandson theory because this is a rider of mannan saying this! we’re talking ancient faeries with affiliations to the unseelie king. the unseelie king kills his daughters as soon as they are born, but two somehow escaped. my guess is that kit’s mother is one of the unseelie king’s daughters and the rider of mannan finds kit’s face familiar because he shares features with the unseelie king? or maybe the rider has seen the daughter before?
something similar happens when kit is fighting another rider of mannan
Delan was staring at Kit intently, as if his face held a mystery. “Who are you, boy?” the Rider demanded, his blade stilled.
Kit wiped blood from his face. There was a dagger near him on the flagstones, just out of reach of his hand. “Christopher Herondale,” he said, his eyes flashing arrogantly. He was a Shadowhunter, Emma thought, through and through; he would never beg for his life.

the fact that this happens twice to kit is ridiculous and has got to mean kit has SOME connection to the unseelie/faerie lands
(history lesson: “qui omnia nomini debes” means “You, boy, who owe everything to a name” in latin and it’s what mark antony says to augustus caeser, augustus was the nephew of julius caesar and mark antony is implying that without caesar’s name he would have been a nobody.
so delan is saying that without the name herondale kit would have been a nobody.)
“And your mother?” said the deep voice of Shade, behind them. A crowd had gathered behind him, too; they couldn’t run that way.
“I don’t know,” said Kit, between his teeth. To his surprise, Hypatia raised her eyebrows, as if she knew something he didn’t.
hypatia is shocked that kit knows nothing of his mother’s heritage. i suspect that she has met her before because kit’s mother has visited the shadow market before.
Something cool touched his temple, brushed back his hair. Shadows surrounded Kit, shadows in which he saw faces familiar and unfamiliar: the face of a woman with pale hair, her mouth forming the words of a song; his father’s face, the angry countenance of Barnabas Hale, Ty looking at him through eyelashes as thick and black as the soot covering the London streets in a Dickens novel.
He heard the singing again, down in the deepest part of everything he’d ever forgotten. The story that I love you, it has no end.
I’m positive that that women was his mother. I don’t know how this helps with my theory but it’s something to take into consideration?? the fact that she has pale hair makes me 👀
LAL was a shorter GOTSM story which involved an illegal shadow market in america
In a small town lost to despair, a dark carnival of a market appears. Faeries and warlocks we know converge, and the fate that will one day produce Kit Herondale is sealed
we encounter a faerie women in this story
this could potentially be kit’s mother
“she has clearly of high fey lineage”
the magician herondale and the faerie woman are lovers
she is hiding from something
a goblin is a type of faerie
that baby the women is holding could be kit. remember that time runs differently in faerie, the women might have sheltered somewhere in faerie for what could have been decades in the mundane world when it was just a few years in faerie time. if this is true that means johnny is not kit’s father and his father is actually tobias’ grandson.
a goblin was mentioned in the scene and it seemed to be searching for something. a goblin is a type of unseelie faerie.
now this goes back to my unseelie king daughter theory, this women is a high ranked faerie so why would she be hiding from her own kind?
(remember; in lord of shadows it’s revealed that the unseelie king murders his daughters at birth, but then cassie tells us that two of his daughters escaped their demise.)
At last he said, Belial said, “Then here is what I will tell you about these lost Herondales. There is power in their blood, and there is great danger too. They are in hiding from an enemy who is neither mortal nor demon. These pursuers are resourceful and they will kill them if they find them.”
and this enemy they are talking about could be the unseelie king or/and his riders of mannan. because faerie’s aren’t mortal nor demon (well they are half-demon but that’s not the point)
“[…] hearing the tales of the Riders, the murderous assassins of the Unseelie Court. They slept beneath a hill until they were wakened, usually in times of war. He’d heard them called the King’s Hounds, for once they had a whiff of their prey, they could follow them across miles of sea, earth, and sky in order to take their lives.”
why is the unseelie king hunting for his daughter?

“In Celtic faerie lore, there is a story of a destructive King Balor who receives a druid prophecy that his daughter would give birth to a grandson who would grow up to kill him. So, he locked his daughter away in a tower to keep her from getting pregnant (we can all guess how that worked out). If the Unseelie King had a similar prophecy given to him, then that would give him cause to murder all his daughters. But Cassie said that two managed to get away.”
cassie could be paralleling this with kit’s mother and it’s super plausible.
through blood, through fire
okay so this november 13th there is a novella called through blood, through fire and here’s the synopsis
Jem Carstairs and Tessa Gray are finally united after waiting over a century to be together, but they become aware a dark threat is looming over a child of the Shadow Market: a lost Herondale, from a line of Herondales who have used the Market to hide from their fellow Nephilim. Now is the time for the lost Herondale to be discovered. Jem and Tessa have to find him before his enemies can.
so this is where the theory is gonna be proven correct ;)
we find out who she is in this novella and i’m shaking at the thought of that
throughout GOTSM jem is seen getting leads on something that we are not told of but we know it’s about discovering the lost herondale and that occurs in this novella! “Now is the time for the lost Herondale to be discovered.” !!!
CAN I JUST ADD this novella is set in 2012. the same year the dark artifices is set in. so all the stuff we learn here is RECENT. i don’t know about you but that’s heckin exciting???
edit: cassie just said all the GOTSM stories lead up to lady midnight and finding kit 👀
jem and tessa need to get to kit before his enemies do, earlier it was talked about in learn about loss how an enemy was looking for the Herondales. i think the unseelie king has found out that his grandson was born and he sent out his riders of mannan (“enemies”) to kill him before the prophecy about his grandson killing the king can become true.
i think that’s it for the information we have about kit’s mother and his lineage (but please let me know if i’ve left something out) and i hope this made your third eye snap because mine ached as i typed this.
