I keep getting tourism ads revolving around the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and I think there is this thought that this will be like the bicentennial in 1976 and all these businesses will profit from patriotic merch sales and tourism to historical sites and it’s so out of touch it’s insane. Nobody is proud to be an American. I’ve never been patriotic but I’m not even in the mood to be like “FUCK King George! FUCK British colonial rule.” Just reading the Declaration of Independence hurts because that shit is so ironic.

"way too" is perhaps unfair. tumblr is, after all, an american company.
The kind of people who say that think it should be 0% American, I think.
Or, like, 4% (US share of global population, although this doesn't account for countries where US-based websites may be geoblocked).
I think the complaint is also not about the number of users, it's about widespread Americentric attitudes and people assuming others are talking about the US or that US laws / cultural practices apply everywhere even though only about half the actual userbase is from the US (according to this poll)
That's not how websites work, though. Websites are like cities. You're not going to have a perfect global representation, because people will go where their own communities are.
Plus several other very large nations will either have their own popular sites, block various popular sites, or some combo thereof. Like, yeah, I don't expect ~10% of all tumblr users to be from China, I assume China probably has its own site/sites that serve as a similar site to tumblr. Ditto India and Brazil, frankly.
And there are still tumblr users from those nations! There are even tumblr users from those nations who primarily post in their own languages! But English-speaking tumblr might not even know about it because since they do not speak those languages, they probably aren't going to search for things in those languages and thus the site will not recommend them.
THIS. And yes, China does have their own versions. Chinese Instagram is Rednote and I hang out there to trade crochet patterns.
