Authors, agents, publishers: every part of the industry is seeing the strain of five years of escalating anti-LGBTQ censorship.
if you'd like to show support, here are some upcoming queer books:
When Life Gives You Corpses is a brilliant YA about a cursed praying mantis who falls for a young witch. Yield Under Great Persuasion is a raunchy, but surprisingly sweet story about two men repairing their relationship. Fabulous Bodies is a horror story about a queer rockstar rising from the dead.
This is Where the Future Bleeds is a fantasy set in a vividly imagined land, where two women (who happen to kiss) are the key to healing the broken sky. You're No Better is a story about a teen struggling in the shadow of his murderous parent. Oil on Canvas is about a woman who finds disturbing paintings in the home of her dead mother.
and then here's a list of 26 queer books by Black authors set to publish this year, and a 10 upcoming books by trans authors. if you want to fight back against queer censorship, use your wallet! or (if that's not an option) you can contact your local library and ask them to stock a copy.
In addition: looking for indie publishers and queer bookshops is a great way to find and support queer authors and stories of so many infinite varieties! (The following suggestions are based on my UK-centric knowledge)
(Some) Queer Presses:
Lurid Editions are "a publishing project committed to intentional and conscientious acts of archival repair". They are "attentive to how marginalised histories are forgotten and remembered, [and] hungry to rediscover overlooked queer books". They've just received funding from Arts Council England to engage queer readers in a project to contribute to the archive!
Cipher Press "We’re really keen on the idea that queer and minority stories are for everybody, and we want to make our books – and the stories they tell - accessible to all" (what an amazing mission statement!)
Anamot Press "Anamot [Անամոթ] means shameless in Armenian. Anamot Press publishes poetry and prose on intersecting experiences of gender, sexuality, race, migration, class, belonging and loss - with no shame."
(Some) Queer Bookshops
Queer Lit Oh man, I remember when this was just a tiny little shop, and now they're the biggest LGBT+ bookshop in Europe! They do amazing work in donating books about being trans to schools and parliament! They have a pay-it-forward board that will make you sob with its notes of love and support. (You can tell I wish I still lived nearby)
Lighthouse For Scottish friends - "a queer-owned and woman led independent community bookshop. We are an unapologetically activist, intersectional, feminist, antiracist, lgbtq+ community space"
Gay's The Word The OG Queer bookshop in the UK. One day I will make my pilgrimage!!
This really is just a tiny snapshot of all the amazing work of celebration and resistance that's being done for Queer literature at the moment. We live in frightening times, but I promise there is still lots of love and joy and hope out there in spaces like these. Support them in whatever way you can!!
this queer author is so very tired but I have a queer cozy fantasy that's out now (left) and a queer cozy horror that releases in July (right), both adult
The Keeper of Lonely Spirits is about an old man cursed with immortality, loss, grief, and the meaning of home
The Lord of the Wood is about a man having a queer awakening in an enchanted forest, the sister who comes after him, and realizing worth doesn't lie in usefulness

Mystic Nine 2 Live Blog [Episode 6]
The way Wu Laogou backed away from that ledge, I suppose unlike his grandson he can’t just jump off a high ledge and know that his Zhang boyfriend is going to catch him.
WOOHOO WE’RE BACK SNAKE BULLSHITTERY THIS IS WHY I COME HERE. And for the shipping. But also the snakes. And nevermind I guess maybe Zhang Qishan would’ve caught him lmao.
Unorthodox honeymoon destination for Shangou but we’re rolling with it. Also, I take back what I said in Ultimate Note. I think this snake might actually be the Mother of All Snakes.
Also, i don’t think Wu Laogou wants Zhang Qishan gone as much as he insists he does. The Lady Doth Protest Too Much..
See, tombs make great dating locations. Theyre learning so much about one another. This side of the polycule is patching itself together nicely!
Well now they’re just blatantly flirting??? WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE’S MORE ADORABLE NOW???
I do wonder who in the polycule is going to teach Wu Laogou to read since he is the one to write the Daomu Biji in the future.
As I said before, I am aware that Farewell My Concubine is an actual opera but I still don’t think it’s a coincidence that it’s one of the ones that gets brought up in this very shippable series.
I’m gonna find it so funny if after all the Wu and Zhang bickering that they reunite with Zhang Qishan and Wu Laogou only to find out that they’ve fully made up again and now they all have to keep working together because their parents remarried.
I do feel a bit bad for Ba Ye and Huo Xiangu who’ve been left babysitting them all though 😭
Well that definitely wasn’t Wu Laogou but that’s how I’m deciding the interpret the messaging that the spooky ghosts are trying to give lmaooo.
Don’t worry Zhang Qishan, I’m sure you’ll fix this relationship somehow!
Well, you raised Wu Erbai and Wu Sanxing so I honestly don’t know what that says about you and your “knack” for parenting 😭

九门 | Mystic Nine E21 ° Wu Ye is awake. He seems to have lost his memory.
Zhang Luyi as Wu Xie and Chen Minghao as Wang Pangzi in 藏海花 | Tibetan Sea Flower (2024) aka Adventure Behind the Bronze Door, episode 24
#Bonus:
The little peaks at them and the relationship that was and wasn't and just... these episodes are far too short and I need these two to actually talk, damnit!
Especially to end like this! BOYS. BOYS. Stop looking so hurt!
Mystic Nine 2 Live Blog [Episode 5]
Nooo let Ba Ye sing the praises of Zhang Xiaoyu…
Wu Xie, gonna be frank, maybe you shouldn’t do a spit take when the girl you want to marry brings up a marriage palanquin. And uuuuughhhh knowing that these two aren’t going to work out this feels like hella foreshadowing for their inevitable break up. It’s like a guillotine waiting to come down at any point in this show.
I’m still trying to determine what kind of relationship Ba Ye and Zhang Qishan have in th polycule because they’re not exes in the same way Wu Laogou and Zhang Qishan are but Ba Ye was NOT happy to hear from him.
OOH I LOVED GETTING SOME SNIPPETS ABOUT THE OTHER MEMBERS OF THE NINE GIMME MORE OF THEM. I cant wait for the others to get involved in the plot as well. Also, from what I’ve gathered about Mystic Nine 1, Zhang Qishan and Eryue Hong were the main popular ship there?
Also thank you to _ who told me that the titles in the intro go through in number order. So Wu Laogou is the Wandering Hero and, I’m counting the seat numbers correctly in the group shot, Xie Yuchen’s grandad is the Scholar.
WHERE IS THE FLUFFY BOY
I love Qi Tiezui he’s so funny. I kind of love how he was basically treating their trip down the waterway as a borderline slumber party with the way he was trying to talk to the other two and completely missing the skulls in the ceiling.
What did he do wrong 😭😭😭 he got the skull just like you asked for.
I’m sorry. Zhang Qishan and Wu Laogou are doing a “ritual” officiated by Ba Ye at an altar in front of witnesses...
IT’S AN UNORTHODOX WEDDING BUT WE’VE HAD WEIRDER.
The officiant’s head got eaten by a giant snake god at Zhang Hailou and Zhang Haixia’s wedding.
See maybe you don’t actually want Zhang Qishan to leave the mystic nine after all? And when I said foreshadowing earlier, I kind of meant that it was foreshadowing that Huo Xiangu and Wu Laogou weren’t actually meant for one another. I didn’t think it would foreshadow Zhang Qishan being vanished by the tower and Wu Laogou immediately deciding to go and get him. 😭
And what the hell is up with the skull
Bonus Crack:
With the announcement of the final 2 episodes of Bittersweet Love airing this week instead of this and next week, I felt an urgency to make another post at least before the episodes aired.
The show is very much centered around Xiao Fan. He is the main character and the show focuses on his initial situation and lack of agency in various aspects of his life before he comes to the realisation that the people around him won't change and will continue to put him in situations that he doesn't want to participate in. He eventually realises that even if he tries to push back a bit, it will not be enough and he must take drastic measures to make the changes he wants. The show does this through the repeated use of situations in which Xiao Fan is pushed to do certain things which he doesn't necessarily feel comfortable, such as his marriage to Lv Xin or his asking Lv Qing for help and having sex with Lv Qing in exchange for what he believes is part of their transactional relationship.
I think that Xiao Fan initially views the relationship with Lv Qing as a possible way for him to have a more unshakeable position in the Bei family since his place as Lv Xin's husband isn't that certain. I respect that Xiao Fan sees that he may be in danger of losing his place in the Bei family and knows that he must somehow do something to make sure that he can stay even if Lv Xin wants to divorce him and when Lv Qing expresses interest in Xiao Fan, he takes what he thinks is a fairly good option and becomes Lv Qing's lover. This doesn't mean that Xiao Fan doesn't feel an attraction but that there is a level of stability that possibly adds to Xiao Fan's decision to have a sexual relationship with his brother-in-law. After being let down by Lv Qing despite his promises to Xiao Fan several times, Xiao Fan finally takes things into his own hands and chooses the most drastic decision and exposes their illicit relationship to force the Bei and Lu families into having to acknowledge that a divorce with Lv Xin is the only way to solve the situation.
While the structure of the story may be frustrating, especially when it seems to put Xiao Fan at the mercy of the people in his life, it serves the purpose of having Xiao Fan realise that the people around him will not change and will only continue to push him to do what they want unless he changes and gives them no choices but the one that he wants them to take for a change.
It does require patience but the pay off is so satisfying and I found myself excited to see Xiao Fan take things into his own hands and gaining the agency that he doesn't have at the start of the story. While the story has a romance between him and Lv Qing, the main story is about Xiao Fan's growth as a person, not his romance with Lv Qing.
Mystic Nine 2026 Live Blog [Episode 4]
Excuse me what the actual fuck is that
He’s getting sucked back in. Hopefully the reason Xiangu and Laogou break up isn’t because he reconnects with Zhang Qishan because I’m still kinda down for their relationship even though I know it’s doomed ;-;
Okay, listen. I know that Foba (?) is a really popular ship here but I’m kinda enjoying what these two have going on as well 😭 how large is this polycule? Is the ship name for these two BaYu?
Incredible that even when one of them isn’t there they’re still making whatever’s wrong with them everyone else’s problem.
Did this show really just imply that Qishan and Laogou are basically two sides of the same coin? Also, I’m down for Ba Ye being involved in the polycule too (though atm I’m mainly shipping him masked Zhang). I’m trying to figure out how he feels about all this since he tired avoiding Zhang Qishan at all costs but he’s nowhere near as antagonistic towards him as Wu Laogou is.
I mean it feels like Zhang Qishan fucked up the relationship there too but nowhere near as extreme.
I SWEAR TO CHRIST IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO THAT DOG-
They’re getting their groove back on. Maybe they’ll have bonded after they get out of this place! If Daomu Biji has taught me anything it’s that tombs make excellent date spots. And I’m sorry but all roads lead back to Heihua I’m afraid.
I’m gonna say it now that whatever Wu Laogou does in pursuit of getting Runty back is valid and he doesn’t need to apologise for any of it.
九门 | Mystic Nine E19 ° Ba Ye wants to see, Xiao Yu.
wen ke xing: im obsessed with you. i love you and believe we’re soulmates and i want to know and understand everything about you so i can love all of it, even if it’s really really really fucked up cause im chill like that ha ha

wen ke xing: *screams of horror*
Mystic Nine 2 Live Blog [Episode 2]
I have so many questions but I am NOT complaining. It’s kind of fun seeing Zeng Shunxi playing this kind of character when the only other two roles I’ve seen him play are Wu Xie and Fang Duobing.
Y’know if Wu Laogou included all this in the Daomu Biji, I get the feeling it would’ve read more like Donna’s Diary in ‘Mamma Mia!’
And I guess that answers my question about how Zhang Qishan slid out of leading the Mystic Nine.
Anyway, scene of all time. No notes. I’m not interpreting this any other way than these two being exes now.
The lack of dogs in the Wu future is distressing. What happened to all the good boys and girls???
I love her already. Even though I think Wu Laogou is in the right when it comes to dealing with Zhang Qishan (wife kidnapping aside), I love how she claps back at him. I mean it is kind of rich for Zhang Qishan to come to Wu Laogou for help after everything. But I’m so down for the polycule rebuilding itself.
Absolute Queen, she’s an icon. I hope we see a lot of her.
Isn’f this the lady who turns into the woman who’s an asshole in Ultimate Note? After all this, I still may not like her in Ultimate Note but I kind of understand how she got to that point if these were the things she was dealing with back in the day.
Okay Grandpa Wu, look at him being all suave. Also, we know for a fact that Wu Xie’s grandad DIDN’T marry Huo Xiangu and she doesn’t like Wu Xie so how is this relationship going to go horribly wrong 😬
And if this relationship goes hella wrong this casting does explain why she’s so vicious to Wu Xie in particular in Ultimate Note. Because now he has the same face as his grandad.
And I actually love Zhang Qishan and Yin Xinyue’s relationship, and actually Wu Laogou and Huo Xiangu (so far before it inevitably implodes) so I’m counting the current extended polycule between them as a massive win for the bisexuals. Can’t wait to keep mapping out this polycule it’s amazing atm.
I need to learn some ship names for these characters. Especially Qishan and Laogou. Qigou? Qilao? Shangou?
万一是好男孩 What if he's actually a good boy?
