I think it's really important to point out one of the major flaws in that highway analogy:

Eminent domain requires payment.

The government cannot come in and merely seize your land under eminent domain and pay you nothing. There is a process & they have to pay you market value for your land and the buildings on it. A couple of my former clients went through this about 15 years ago when the 202 Bypass went through in Montgomery & Bucks County in Pennsylvania. Their houses and land were taken via eminent domain so that the highway could be built, but, I need to say this again: they were paid.

They were paid and there was a process in which they were informed ahead of time. They didn't just drive home one day and find out their home had been snatched, too bad, so sad, no money for you, you should have put your house in a bank vault.

Just taking someone's shit like that without compensation has a name, and it's not eminent domain or anything like it:

It's fucking theft.

(I'm not interested in hearing the same tired shit about how copyright is inherently bad and only protects corporations, because as someone who deals with protecting my livelihood from scammers and scrapers via copyright every goddamned day, this isn't a fun mental exercise/philosophical debate for me, and you're absolutely wrong. Mystic Nine 2 Live Blog [Episode 12]

People weren’t kidding about the polycule vibes of Mystic Nine.

Oh the opening theme tune changed??? I wasn’t expecting that. I do really like the new music though I’m gonna miss the iconic titles of the Mystic Nine being announced. The images have also gotten more colourful and there’s new shots in there too. Is it adding more details to show the new arc we’re about to enter?

First gathering of the polycule did not disappoint but is Chen Pi like the one guy in the group who isn’t involved in the polyculing. Is he the this guy of the Mystic Nine?:

Eryue Hong being the first to assist Fo Ye feels right considering how shipped they were in M91. That’s Zhang Qishan’s husband. Well, one of them.

And I love that the team are heading out to rescue Wu Laogou.

That is an interesting reason but that does make me wonder what on earth the Japanese want Wu Laogou to tame???

Anyway, from what I’ve gathered of the polycule interaction thus far; Eryue, Baye, and Jiuye are the current closest to Zhang Qishan in the polycule, Wu Laogou was very close to him but they’re now “It’s Complicated” to each other. Huo Xiangu is only involved with Wu Laogou for the moment. Chen Pi is completely oblivious to what everyone else is going and Heibei also isn’t as involved with the polycule as the rest of them. I haven’t got a read on Li yet.

Xie Jiuye rage baiting Huo Wenhai is honestly hilarious. I love that he’s just running rings round this idiot. Keep it up, Jiuye!

Ohhhh is this how Chen Pi fits into the polycule? He’s connected via Xie Jiuye??? Also, if so then if I had a nickel for every time Ji Xiaobing played a member of the Xie Clan who has a relationship with a “ruffian” who wears dark clothing and tries to give them food I’d have two nickels. (Everywhere I go I see Heihua) I’m beginning to think the Xie Clan have a type.

I find it very interesting that the Japanese guy first tried to threaten Wu Laogou with Zhang Qishan’s men when Huo Xiangu being implicated by her clan’s activities should’ve been the obvious first threat. Veryyyy interesting.

I guess the food wasn’t hallucinating then. Also, it’s ironic that Huo Wenhai wants to expose Xie Jiuye by claiming connections to Japan when his own clan is in it up to their neck however unintentionally.

Okayyy I’m starting to see how Third Master fits into the polycule as well. They’re also giving a pairing where one doesn’t age and one does just these two are a lot later down the timeline of that kind of relationship than some of the other DMBJ pairings.

I love all of the Mystic Nine already. I’m so excited to see more of the rest of them over the next few episodes.

In addition to my previous post about the 90s as a full-fledged character in the series, I want to add that ofc I missed the main trick of the authors lol, linked, it seems to me, to an attempt to bypass censorship. As far as I know, in the novel, it takes Xiaofan a long time to come to terms with his feelings for ge and his own identity, whereas in the series, this aspect is significantly toned down. Ultimately, the fact that the series is actually also about a forbidden relationship gets lost. Xiaofan doesn't question anything, even though the series includes a line after their first time together stating that he completely failed to understand the meaning of what had happened between him and Luqing. Those around them do not fight against the lovers, because they are unaware of the relationship. The only struggle we observe is, paradoxically, the struggle between the two lovers themselves, due to the notorious miscommunication. And this brings us to the next point.

For Xiaofan, Luqing is a bearer of sacred knowledge and a sacred figure in his own right - someone who introduced him to the wider world, mentored him, taught him the fascination and importance of economic knowledge and demonstrated the value of information. (Not to mention sex education, haha.)

At the same time, Luqing is a man who believes he is free to withhold certain information from his charming ward. And this information concerns homophobia. Until ep 11 he was the only one of the pair who experienced it firsthand at the hands of a family member. We will never know exactly what he had to endure during the forced separation from Wen Xi, we will never know the words his mother spoke to him nor will we feel her contempt and disgust for people like him. The only thing that bears witness to the experience he has been through is his fear for the person he loves. As luck - or rather, the lack thereof - would have it, this man turned out to be a gentle little lamb (of course, Xiaofan turned out to be much stronger but still). Hence the communication problems. Luqing keeps this terrible knowledge to himself, consciously depriving himself of the opportunity to be open with his partner in common, because so much hinges on his feelings, his fears about this one thing.

And the fact of miscommunication enables the authors to shift the focus from self-identification and the Xiaofan's acceptance of himself and his partner to the social divide. (Interestingly, after Xiaofan exposes their relationship to their families, it is Lu ma who takes it the hardest (while his father continues to deny everything). In a strange way, this somewhat levels the playing field between Xiaofan and Luqing, for whom his mother was also worried.) But until then, Xiaofan accepts the latter’s lack of openness toward himself, a simpleton, as a matter of course. And he has grounds to think so, because the social gap between them is real. Voilà. No one speaks openly about homophobia, no one warns the characters of the danger, no one threatens them, the subject is simply not discussed by a person who know it firsthand - Bei Luqing. His silence stirs a different kind of anxiety in his loved one - the one connected with social gap - and Luqing does not disabuse Xiaofan of his fears, wishing to spare him further pain and shield him from suffering of special kind.

(Wen Xi is the exception, however, his account of what he endured actually spurs Xiaofan to action: he realizes that his ge has already been through something similar and will be able to survive it again as the Bei family's only son and eldest child. Simply put, Wen Xi was too late with his story if he was trying to scare or warn Xiaofan, haha.)

Mystic Nine 2 Live Blog [Episode 11]

Just learned that Yiwu seems to also be getting adopted as a ship name for Zhang Qishan and Wu Laogou rather than Shangou (@foxofninetales did also tell me the 15 was an option) but I wasn’t sure how to tag that. However, since Yi = One and Wu = Five that makes sense as a ship name for me so I shall be proceeding with calling them this from now on unless I’m corrected again!

Ayyy it’s you again! Why is he here? 😭 idk why but I kinda assumed Hendry only came into things during the modern timeline (and by that I mean in like the 70s or 80s) I didn’t expect him to have been in China during the Republic Timeline as well 😭

Well damn he had me fooled! I guess Yiwu are still getting back together! Yay! Also, is this place turning out to be similar to the pitcher plant trap in Archives? A faux mystery to lure in the Mystic Nine and kill them so the Japanese can seize control of Changsha?

And, I guess I was wrong about the timeloop theory but it was a pretty mad theory to be fair. Now that I think about it, I think there is some rule in the censorship guidelines about time travel and they’re very strict about it.

Again, I may not like her in Ultimate Note, but goddamit girl I get it. I too would have a semi villain arc if I’d had to endure these three and the creepy eunuch.

If I had a nickel for every time Zeng Shunxi played a guy from the Wu Family in DMBJ in a relationship with a powerful member of the Zhang Clan who’s extremely protective of him I’d have two nickels which makes this all the more fun. Yiwu and Pingxie have extremely different vibes (plus Yiwu are tied into the M9 polycule tapestry).

And I love that we are indeed getting the band together to figure out what to do about getting Wu Laogou back. And yes please for the love of it all get that man out of Xie Jiuye’s house!

Bittersweet Love did a lot of things very well, but one thing I am deeply appreciating at the end is how the series very deliberately pushed back against the standard trope of the rich successful seme who comes in and spoils his impoverished uke, like some sort of fairy tale prince.

All tropes have their time and place, and that one can be fun in a lot of situations (Me and Thee for example), but this show demonstrated so well how that kind of vast inequity can also be a huge impediment to a strong relationship.

Lu Qing was enormously privileged; as Xiao Fan said, he had literally never failed in his life before. He had his wealth and his background and his connections, and all of those things led to him underestimating Xiao Fan over and over again. He adored him, yes, but he never treated him as an equal. His protectiveness was through a myopic filter, where he withheld information from Xiao Fan in service of his greater goal, while never really engaging with the real hurt it would cause Xiao Fan as a human being with feelings. All his grand plans and machinations had a purpose of them being together, yet time after time, they weren't yet enough, there was more to do, and Xiao Fan was the one who suffered the most waiting for his prince to have the perfect amount of power.

Xiao Fan's greatest strength was his humanity, his ability to empathize with anyone, from his complicated college bully turned friend to his disdainful but deeply unhappy wife. The fact that the man he loved the most was incapable of connecting with him at the most fundamental human level, and instead continuously pulled him back and forth in service of unspoken grand plans was incredibly demeaning. And he was right to refuse to continue to tolerate it any longer.

Character-wise Xiao Fan wanted Lu Qing to remember him, but story-wise Xiao Fan leveled the playing field by pulling Lu Qing off the pedestal he had been born on and giving him a taste of failure. And to Lu Qing's credit, he wasn't angry about it - because it gave him the most clear perspective that everything else didn't matter, as long as he had Xiao Fan. And he shows that the lesson took, in the end, as he works to prepare breakfast for his husband, and supports his husband's emotional desires in agreeing to go back to see his family.

The rich savior fantasy can be fun, but it can only work by refusing to acknowledge that in the real world, wealth inequity causes harm, creates barriers, and brings distance and isolation. This show willingly embraced that reality, while still bringing us the satisfaction of the underdog bringing the big dog to heel, and it was delightful.
