We pan across a group of hockey players huddled around a television in the lounge area of a practice facility. These characters are unfamiliar to us. There’s almost a nervous energy hanging in the air.

A lone figure enters: tall, broad, red hair, beard. He cuts an intimidating figure but carries himself as though he’s used to taking up as little space as possible [we meet Ryan].

He asks what is going on and a man with kind disposition and dimples [Wyatt] tells him that Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov are apparently launching some sort of charity. Together.

But don’t they hate each other?

We have a classic Heated Rivalry cut between a TV broadcast and the events occurring on-screen, fluctuating between this scene [Tough Guy, chapter 18] and the press conference [Heated Rivalry, epilogue] where Shane and Ilya announce the launch of the Irina foundation.

Ilya shares heartfelt words about his mother, who lost her battle with depression and after whom the foundation is named.

Silence hangs in the air at the practice facility, broken by Ryan and Wyatt, speaking in hushed tones.

I didn’t know his mother killed herself. No one knew. But that’s not true because apparently Shane Hollander did. How long have they been friends?

A lean, handsome man with dark hair [Troy] speaks up with overplayed bravado, “they’re probably fucking.” A blond man with arrogance seeping out of every pore recoils [Dallas Kent]. “Gross, Rozanov would never, but I bet Hollander is a fucking homo.”

We see this strike Ryan like a physical blow. Wyatt’s hand comes to his shoulder, there is understanding and support in this small gesture. They share a look. We see an internal struggle, a clenched jaw, quiet resolve. Ryan straightens his back as the jeering continues in the background. Perhaps he takes a moment, leaves the room before he rolls back his shoulders, using his size to make himself intimidating; a threat. “Hey, Kent. Just so you know, I’m gay.” Troy looks shaken, Kent looks angry but intimidated.

We return to the press conference which is wrapping up, we follow Ilya and Shane into a bathroom, Hayden is enlisted to guard the door. They are tender and open and caring with one another. The audience thinks back to another bathroom, in Vegas, sees how far they’ve come.

In one fell swoop we do the following:

Launch the Irina foundation.

Launch the public friendship.

Show the progression of Shane and Ilya’s relationship.

Showcase that there are other gay players out there, who are coming out, albeit not on national television.

Reaffirm that Scott Hunter coming out has not somehow erased homophobia within the league (which is obvious but some people apparently need the reminder).

We show the audience that Hayden knows about Ilya and Shane’s relationship and is grudgingly accepting of it.

We introduce Ryan and Wyatt as sympathetic characters.

We establish Troy as an asshole with room to grow and Dallas Kent as an antagonist.
