however, and i know this from working with young men firsthand in my job, violent pornography addiction and incel radicalization through social media are now so common that i would say 8/10 teenaged men in the US have unironically adopted extreme misogynistic ideologies, which is of course reflected in the epidemic of bullying and sexual assault against teen girls.

i also once again feel compelled to point out that this absolutely crosses racial lines in a way that actually did surprise me when i noticed it; in the past, my most violent and disrespectful students were always white young men. now, without fail, my most violent and conservative students are black male teenagers. this has happened within the last 2-3 years. i often wonder how the way i'm treated as a black professor compares to my white, asian, and latina colleagues ... but i can't actually ask them because they start getting anxious and defensive if we talk about male vs female student demographic trends. the "well, these boys need help" always pops out :/

my husband told me, after many years of being together, that when he was about 7 a teacher used to single him out for being disrespectful at school. It’s the only way men are able to discuss their issues because society taught them that they shouldn’t burden people with their issues or that their issues are meaningless or that their issues aren’t actually a thing. Sharing anecdotes with friends is one way of talking about it, because they feel comfortable enough to share. At the same time, they might just not know that the event was traumatic because it’s trauma y’all.
