Anon, ten years ago gay people couldn't get married in large parts of the US. AIDS was an almost certain death sentence when I was in high school. I was looking at job boards the other day and found a part time gas station job that had health insurance as a benefit, which NEVER would have happened 15 years ago. When I was a kid, hitting your child was extremely normalized in the US and my parents were the weird ones for not doing it. There is a vaccine for chicken pox. I didn't meet anyone who had transitioned until my 20s because it was so uncommon to transition in the aughts, and now there are some states that protect your right to have gender affirming care provided by your health insurance. It's not all states, but it's better than the number of states that had it in 2010, which was zero. THERE ARE TENANTS UNIONS NOW. WE HAVE A VACCINE AGAINST CERVICAL CANCER.
And all of that has been the work of a lot of individuals and organizations and research teams and activists.
Do you know how bugfuck insane the words "Unionized Starbucks" would have sounded to someone in 2005? Baristas getting union-mandated breaks could have been a throwaway joke in part of the Scary Movie franchise as something ridiculous.

there was backlash from homeschooling "parents rights" advocates in my area before because of a daycare teaching kids about consent...all they learned is that you don't have to accept unwanted physical intimacy. one scenario that happened is a parent told her toddler boy to kiss a toddler girl in class. toddler boy comes back and says that toddler girl didn't want a kiss. it turns out the kids were taught that you don't touch someone if they say "no". parents thought this was ridiculous. I felt crazy hearing them talk about it, why in the world would you be upset by kids respecting each others boundaries, and why are you asking your toddlers to kiss each other in the first place as if they're toys and not human beings?

on first read, this looks like someone who wishes they could be confident in voting blue but they're bummed by the democrats in office. targets title ix for their ire but doesn't really explain, perhaps assuming i'm out of touch and will just react instead of doing my due diligence (bad bet: i'm an attorney). uses over the top dramatic language like "vicious." they equate the left and right as being identical and indicates they won't be voting for either, with the implication that i shouldn't either, but goes on to blame the dems specifically for...something.
look at the very specific way they've couched this sentence:

title ix, if you didn't know, bans sex-based discrimination in schools and education. when someone tells you about democrats destroying title ix, that someone is a TERF.
and TERFs largely have aligned with the conservative hard right. I'll link a few articles at the bottom with detailed explainers, but for right here it's enough to say that TERFs want the far right to win because the far right is voting with them on their single issue, which is the destruction of trans rights and the ouster of trans and gnc women from public spaces. TERFs have marched with the Proud Boys. TERFs have partnered with anti-lgbtq groups to advance their anti-trans agenda. they will throw every other issue under the bus repeatedly if their anti-trans agenda wins.
and, importantly, the far right recognizes that TERFs are a tool they can use to destablize the left. the far right knows that as long as they will align with TERFs on this single issue, which they will because they too want to enforce the gender binary and traditional gender roles, TERFs will vote for and with them regardless of every single other issue. not only that, but the far right knows TERFs are a modern movement that's gained traction in social media spaces over the last several years, and they are relying on TERFs to send asks like this one to infiltrate spaces like tumblr and twitter and tiktok to encourage would-be blue voters not to vote because they want the far right to win.
this is a psyop. this is, whether formalized or not, a psychological operation intended to discourage voting in and among the left.
don't fall prey. vote blue in november.

All I will add is: WRITE THOSE BREAKFAST SCENES if you want to, they can be absolutely critical in getting a handle on your characters. Or even on the setting. Write them all to fuck. Go hogwild.
Then cut them. They're for you, and for the characters. Not the readers.
Lo these many years ago, in an elevator at some convention or other, Larry Niven gave me some of the best writing advice ever:
"You can always burn it."
Go ahead and write that stuff. The breakfasts, the staring-into-empty-space scenes, whatever. Then pull them out of your work if they serve too little useful purpose. If you feel the need, shove such material into a separate folder to examine for possible usefulness later.
Even if you don't put it where other people can see it, no writing is ever wasted. Every sentence will teach you something. But if a passage or sequence doesn't help illuminate character, build the world, or advance the plot, get it the hell out of your narrative.
Your readers' time is precious. Do them the courtesy of not wasting it.
The above is true, but I will also add one more thing:
You will not please all readers all of the time.
Different people will have emphatically fucking different opinions about whether that breakfast scene was necessary, important, or worthwhile. Tolkien spends a lot of time describing the landscape and you can put people in a room and watch them have knock-down bloody fist fights about whether this is of immense literary value or whether this is why Lord of the Rings is unreadable.
They're both right. Objectively correct answers to that don't exist.
I have a friend who finds My Neighbour Totoro unwatchable. To them, the pacing of that movie is literal torture, and there was a point in our lives that they looked at me and went "can we please watch something else I would literally rather do my taxes." I am absolutely sure a bunch of people reading this just choked on something and want to go fight my friend. I think my friend is wrong. But also, my friend is 100% right.
I have personally had both someone bitch about the absolutely appallingly slow pacing in one of my stories and then other people cite the exact same scenes as their favourite thing in the world and the reason they reread constantly. And thank me for not rushing, for giving those details, for filling things in.
Both of those people are right, I just don't care to write with one of them in mind.
Context matters, too. To the person in the original thread, here and now, that 15 minutes describing Starbucks is agonizingly painful; a hundred years from now a historian might read or play that description to their colleagues or a historical fiction author might put exactly the same description in a novel and it will have people utterly fucking rapt.
Context is everything, and so is audience. What is "good" pacing will depend on your context and your audience.
This is a giant pain in the ass! Because it means that part of nailing down the skill of pacing is nailing down who your audience is, and whether you're reaching them, and how to find out from them if you're succeeding, and also if this is the audience you want to be writing for. If this is the writer you want to be.
But it means that's another reason to write that scene if you want to write that scene: because you literally won't know if it's a scene to keep until afterwards, anyway.
The idea that was sold to us of "love is effortless and you should communicate telepathically with your partner" is false. Love is awkward as hell.
