Alec had expected...

Honestly he doesn’t know what he expected.

Magnus Bane is so far from predictable that Alec doubts anyone could guess his moves without careful insight, thoughts and planning.  He’s brilliant and magical and even just the way he talks about rituals is captivating.

It makes Alec pay attention to his words when all he wants to do is look at Magnus.

Magnus makes it easy to look at him and harder still to look away.  He sprawls out with easy charm, the skin of his chest highlighted by necklaces and his pants tight enough that Alec knows it’s on purpose.

It’s pure torment but to say anything would be to admit that he’s noticed and Alec’s not ready yet for what will follow.

He’s close.

He can’t not be.

Not with the way Bane talks and moves and especially because Bane becomes Magnus in between one breath and the next. Alec tries but he can’t keep his voice from softening or from going off topic when Magnus offers him the book of rituals.  Just because Alec mentioned he likes the feel of older books.

It’s an honor to hold something so magical and yet what truly thrills Alec is that it’s Magnus’ magic.

They come to an agreement and as the anchor Alec will be tied to Magnus, not Clary.  

At least Jace won’t be able to complain about that.

Alec wants to stay but knows he should go yet he waivers, waiting for an excuse and Magnus provides one.

The first drink is awful but before Alec can even try to pretend to like it, Magnus has snapped it away and is stepping closer, ignoring the table between them to personally lift a new glass to Alec’s lips.

If Magnus is trying to seduce him, it's working.

The drink may be delicious but what is even more appealing is how Magnus noticed and cared that Alec didn't like the first drink.

Even if Magnus did it in the most dramatic way possible.

“I don’t know much about food outside the Institute.” Is all Alec can admit, because he’s not sure what else to say and doesn’t want to suggest something he doesn’t know.

“Let's talk a bit first then, and perhaps after you’ll trust me to order for you?”

They talk about everything for over an hour.

Alec thinks he’ll be on edge, the reminder that he’s alone with a man he’s attracted to who has made at least one overture towards him should be overwhelming.

Yet Alec feels safe.

He feels seen and secure and admired and he finds himself wanting more and more as Magnus — who never went back to his own chair — sits next to him.  Magnus’ thigh is hot and Alec imagines he can feel the heat seeping through his jeans to his skin.

Alec swallows, wishing very suddenly not that he hadn’t stayed, but that he hadn’t hesitated at all earlier.  Wouldn’t it have been easier now? If he’d let Magnus take the leap then.

It feels like an invisible barrier Alec doesn’t know how to cross and he’s beginning to feel helpless when fingers press warm and firm against his jaw.

“You’ve wandered away from me, Alexander.” Magnus’ gaze holds no censure, but his voice is as firm as his grip. There’s no blame and Alec wonders if this is what it’s like to feel benediction.

“Sorry,” he murmurs because he is and his lips brush where Magnus' thumb presses against the corner of his mouth.  It’s tempting to turn and take Magnus’ thumb into his mouth but Alec only knows the instinct, not what he’s supposed to do after.  

Magnus makes the choice for him and it’s a relief to give in.

It’s such a simple, small touch and yet Alexander whimpers when Magnus pets his thumb over Alexander’s lips. He’s so very eager for even the most delicate of intimacies. 

It’s a pity to delay the expansion of Alexander’s palette — Magnus has an idea now of what his shadowwhunter will like from their talk — but Magnus is hungry for something else now and by the look and sound, so is Alexander.

Magnus will take the opportunity offered to him and Ragnor did tell him not to let Alexander doubt him.

“I kiss you, pretty boy.” Magnus is quiet but his words have Alexander’s eyes and attention on him, his breathing quickening. “And it means something. You understand? I’m not someone you experiment with, Alexander. I kiss you, I keep you. As simple as that.”

Alexander’s mouth crashes into his own, as if he’s barely been holding back except for the worry that perhaps, this wasn’t mutual.

Magnus isn’t sure how much or which parts of his reputation Alexander has heard, but he doubts any of it is good when it comes to relationships. Even if Alexander doesn’t pay attention to that kind of thing, the words once whispered can still linger for years.

Magnus won’t risk his boy thinking Magnus isn’t serious.

Not after his discussion with Ragnor.

Not when it’s clear that such easily meant words evoke such relieved passion in Alexander. 

Magnus is also relieved, mostly that Ragnor saw through the heart of it.  

Magnus never would have guessed the amount of passion that Alexander already held concerning him.  Especially when every time Magnus shifts — as if he might move away — Alexander whines, lips pressing closer and fingers hesitantly more persistent on Magnus’ thigh.

They’re fairly chaste kisses, all things considered.  For all that Alexander sounds as though he’s fought a battle, his breath coming fast and unsteady, Magnus hasn’t even fully tasted him yet.

No, this is just from some long, lingering kisses and a few simple moments of savoring each other.

Alexander pants against Magnus’ mouth and for a moment their foreheads touch.

“I think my meeting might need to be extended.” Alexander finally whispers, “I’ll let them know later that it took a while to compile compatible rituals.”

Magnus smirks, just because he can, “should I keep you up all night for authenticity, then? Or should I let you sleep if I’d like.”

“Oh, if you’d like?” Alexander teases back and Magnus chuckles, loving to see it.

“Isn’t that what you’d enjoy, darling? Doing what I like?” Alexander tries to roll his eyes but his fingers tighten on Magnus’ shoulders and finally he nods, as if the admittance is half the problem.

“Good boy.” Magnus kisses Alexander’s jaw, feeling him shiver at the praise and the caress.

“So, how did it go?” Ragnor asks the moment he picks up the phone, not even bothering to greet Magnus.

“How do you know it went anywhere?” Magnus settles against his pillows and runs his fingers through Alexander’s hair, the weight of him against Magnus’ side solid.

“You aren’t one to sit around, ducky. Not once you’ve made up your mind. I don’t know where it went, I just know it did. So tell me, how did it go?"

“Just sleeping.” Magnus sniffs dramatically when Ragnor stays silent, as if he doesn’t believe him. “He practically swooned from a few kisses, Ragnor. I didn’t realize how right you were about his inexperience. I am happy to admit that I nearly made a rather large mistake with the way I had intended to approach him and am most grateful for you."

That out of the way, Magnus takes a large sip of his tea. "Anyway, for your information, we’re both wearing pajamas.  Both of us, Ragnor, do you understand how devastating being gentlemanly is on my poor skin?”

“Oh stop complaining, you’re only wearing the pants, aren’t you?”

Magnus feels rather outraged that Ragnor knows him so well, “I normally sleep naked Ragnor. The pants are enough of a nightmare.”

“Unfortunately, I am aware of your unnecessary sleeping habits.”

“Besides, don't tell me you didn’t get him out of his shirt as well. I know you Magnus, even if it’s as innocent as you say.”

Magnus frowns from where his fingers are possessively tracing the patterns of an already memorized rune.

“You are the most dreadful being in the world, cabbage. Truly.” Magnus is sincerely proud of himself for being so restrained. The sum of his efforts is currently because he wants this to be a gentle exploration as Alexander learns to stop holding back.

Also there is no need to rush it, not when it feels as though something soft and sacred is being slowly built.

“Yes, I am aware and proud of it. Now, do you feel like you’ve achieved what you wanted? You said you took the initiative.” 

“Ah, well he wants to be kept.” Magnus ignores Ragnor’s sound of faux dismay, “and you were right. He’s never done this. Any of this. He was holding on by a bare thread but not directly because of me.” 

Magnus is relieved for both the magical bubble he’s placed around himself and the phone and the use of a language Alexander won’t understand.

Because while it’s rather rude to speak like this while Alexander is sleeping directly beside him, it’s also a conversation that needs to happen now.  With advice that Magnus can start using the moment Alexander wakes up.

“Now, how do I keep him? Truly. Even with the bullshit the Clave will pull”

“I think you’re well on the way to that already.” Ragnor reminds him and Magnus knows that, the evidence is Alexander’s body lying next to his own. “As for politically, we'll just have to make sure that Jocelyn and her ilk can’t blame anything on him. You know how that woman can be. As long as they aren’t given an easy excuse, they can’t outright punish him just for dating you.”

Magnus does know and suddenly he’s quite a bit more wary of Clary’s involvement. 

“And the personal aspect?” Because it’s already gnawing at Magnus, on how to keep his lovely shadowhunter who is so innocent in some ways and so very dangerous in others.

“I don’t know much about shadowhunter love lives, ducky. Trust your instinct in the personal aspect, but from an outside perspective he seems a bit undermined. I’m sure being, as I stated earlier, a safe space for him to retire to is your best option. Make yourself a place he craves, until he runs to you without realizing his feet are even moving.”

okay so no ragnor and magnus yet because magnus needs to get the first date (business meeting i mean) out of the way so he can go to Ragnor for more advice and to gush about it and so ragnor can watch (some) of his memories and tell Magnus what Magnus 'omg i want him' glasses aren't showing him. i do love team immortal however and Ragnor is not going to fail Magnus in helping him bag a shadowhunter! i hope you enjoy '

Alexander meets him where Magnus tells him too and he comes alone. He’s clearly nervous, from where Magnus is watching him, but it’s not the kind of nervous that comes with a trap. It’s the kind that comes from someone who is nervous because they’re excited and afraid.

NEver before has Magnus been so grateful for Ragnor’s wisdom and how he won’t let Magnus accidentally sabotage himself.

“Alexander.” He says and he can’t help the warmth in his voice or the curl of eager delight on the vowels of Alexander’s name. “I’m pleased you’ve arrived so promptly.” He means it, because Alexander is half an hour early and he’s turning to Magnus with surprised softness and he smiles, like he doesn’t even know he’s doing it and then he twitches and looks behind him and scowls.

“We’re not meeting here, right?” 

His voice is terse compared to how soft his smile was but Magnus tuts and waves a hand, opening a portal. 

“I would hardly have such a private conversation with such an esteemed—” he can’t help the way his eyes trail up and down Alexander’s body or that his mouth goes so dry he has to lick it, “guest in such a public spot. Come,” and he holds out his hand and it’s taken by a large warm hand, calloused fingers tangling with his own.

“Great, because we're either both being tailed by circle members. Or one of mine decided they want their ass kicked when I get back. More nephilim are coming.”

Magnus pulls him through the portal because he doesn’t care who it is, they are not interrupting his date!

Meeting.

The very important meeting that is so top secret he’s basically stolen away the Acting Head of the Institute and it’s primary commander. 

“How could you tell?” Magnus asks as Alexander looks around.

It’s a lovely room. All soft lights and glass windows and showing off the landscape of a country Magnus doesn’t think Alexander recognizes from the delight on his face. 

“Oh, I could smell them.” He says, like it’s common for nephilim to act like a vampire or werewolf. “I didn’t want to stick around long enough to see if they were familiar. I’ll know later, I updated our security protocols to active danger. No one leaves or comes into my Institute without me knowing.” 

“Practical.” Magnus compliments when he really wants to say, ‘delectable’ because the lighting highlights the dark curve of the rune on Alexander’s neck. “Now, shall we discuss things first? Get business out of the way for perhaps a more pleasurable time after.” 

Alexander looks confused and Magnus remembers Ragnors advice.

“I find you very interesting, Alexander.” Tempting even, Magnus thinks to himself, “I’ll admit I may have had some ulterior motives in getting you all to myself. Do you drink?”

“Uh, not during work.” And Alexander’s throat is bobbing, his eyes wide and almost panicked, “I— Magnus, I’m—”

“Hush darling,” Magnus can’t help but say and he presses a finger to Alexander’s lips and marvels as they kiss his skin in surprise. “You don’t have to pick just yet. Business first, pesky things out of our way and mind, and then decide?”

Alexander nods and then he sits down, across from Magnus with a little low table between them and Magnus stretches out, letting his body curve so that Alexander can’t look at him without seeing all of him.

It’s a little cruel, considering the wide eyed looks he’s getting and the blush on Alexander’s face.

However Magnus never promised not to tease.

They figure out terms and what they’ll need for the ritual and which ritual to use. Magnus has three for Alexander to pick from, carefully chosen between him and Ragnor.  They all need an anchor, an intimate connection that Magnus will establish between himself and another.

“Jace is going to want to be the anchor.” Alexander murmurs and Magnus laughs, shocked at the point.

“Well, too bad for blondie but he either listens to me and obeys my rules. Or dear friend Ms. Fray won't be getting her memories back and Alexander, the only anchor I will allow, is you.”

Alexander looks both pleased and a little disgusted and Magnus’ stomach curdles that he’d read this part of Alexander’s character so wrong.

“Is something the matter?” He asks, far cooler than he’s been this entire time but Alexander is apparently too distressed to notice.

“This anchor business, it’s not going to tie me to Fray, is it?”

Magnus blinks, waiting for the punchline and then he smiles and purrs, “no, Alexander. The only connection you’ll have is the one with me.”

Alexander seems to miss the connotations because he practically melts in relief and he drains the cup of iced tea he’s been drinking.

“Oh thank the angel.” He mutters and he gives Magnus a look of such pure appreciation that Magnus is stunned. “I’m not sure I could have agreed otherwise.”

Magnus quietly sets out the documents for signatures, more than a little surprised by just how well this is going and he’s a bit worried that Alexander is going to ask to leave as soon as they're done.

Instead, his shadowhunter seals with signature, blood and a personal rune carved into the paper with a stele in a delicate twist of lines. 

“And now?”

“And now, to pleasure.” Magnus charms, summoning two drinks and holding one out, “to us and our future partnerships?”

“Uh, to us.” Alexander agrees with a charming curl of his lips and a brightness that reaches his eyes as he hesitantly clinks his glass with Magnus’.

The face he makes at the taste is so delightfully sweet that Magnus has to hide away a chuckle and he reaches out, plucking the glass away and twirling it until it changes to a smooth, icy plum.

“Try this,” he offers and without thinking, he steps over the table and leans close, pressing Alexander against the back of the chair with the drink pressed to his lips.

Alexander looks like the thought of denying Magnus never crosses his mind as he opens his mouth and takes a sip.

It stains his lips dark and shiny and Magnus feels hunger awakening as Alexander gives him a softer look, full of wonder.

“It’s good.” Like he’s surprised and awed that Magnus cared he didn’t like the first drink.

“Perfect.” Magnus is going to make sure that Alexander enjoys every single moment of their time together, “now, darling. What do you like to eat?”

So, how about a prompt where the group realizes exactly how deep the bond of friendship and trust between these 3 are and exactly how far they would go for each other. oh you're good! you're actually the tenth prompt i got (i try to answer in order of sending in) so definitely fine!

if this isn't quite what you were hoping for, feel free to prompt again next week because this is not where I intended to go with this and it's more Ragnor/Magnus than team!immortal because Magnus needed to talk to Ragnor to get his story straight before he talks to Cat. Also Ragnor is who you go to for overthinking and planning.

Magnus stares at his phone and wishes it would bite him.

If it did, it would be an excuse not to call, or to at least avoid making the call for a little longer.

Magnus gives himself a solid minute to let himself contemplate giving his phone teeth before he sighs, calling Ragnor and picking a soothing chamomile. 

He’ll need to be completely sober for this conversation. 

“Dearest,” Magnus coos into the phone the moment the dialing ends. There is a pause that is distinctly groggy and then a dry wheeze.

“It’s ten past noon in fall.” Ragnor manages to finally croak out, “are you dying? You had better not have called me instead of Cat if you’re injured.”

“It’s August.” Magnus says distractedly, “that's not fall.”

“It’s September, and it’s autumn!” Ragnor yells through the phone, “it's past bloody July and the sun is wilting my roses and nearly all of my irish moss has withered. So I will not be available for daylight hours until the weather is proper again!”

“I’m wooing a shadowhunter.” Magnus gets out, because otherwise it will be another hour before Ragnor will stop his, ‘some of us are old and delicate in our wiser years’. And well this is definitely going to just add another segment to the future lecture, it will be worth it.

Well, Magnus hopes it will be worth it.

“A— ducky, did you just say a shadowhunter?” Ragnor sounds awake now, wide awake and alert.

In a way he normally refuses to be during the heat.

“Yes.” And Magnus sighs, because he knows why Ragnor is so shocked.

“I— are you sure?” and Magnus sighs again, deeper and longer this time.

“I haven’t told Cat yet, I called you first.” Because Magnus is sure, which means he needs to talk it out with Ragnor first, to prepare a good defense when Cat questions his sanity and self-care.

“Oh ducky.” Ragnor says, soft and like he’s already hurting on Magnus’ behalf.

“He’s not—” Magnus tries to say, but it’s wrong because Alec is a shadowhunter. He’s like every other shadowhunter, in a way that Magnus can’t deny.

But Magnus thinks Alexander is also more than just that.

“A male shadowhunter?” Ragnor carefully hedges because he’s not going to outright ask if Magnus is in his right mind.

But Alexander had felt like potential and Magnus, Magnus craves another taste of what could be.

“It’s been a long time.” Ragnor reminds him, a gentle chide and Magnus shudders.

“A century.” He admits because while his bed is only empty when he wants it to be, he’s held his heart carefully hidden and protected from all touch.

Ragnor gives a mournful little sigh and Magnus can imagine him shaking his head, “well. Even for you, this isn’t the worst thing. Remember when we did that small bit of vandalism in the 1600’s?”

And Magnus gives an aborted, choking laugh because he does.

He does remember that. 

It’s when he finally believed and understood how much they loved him.

How much they will always love him.

Because Cat and Ragnor once slaughtered an entire Institute when its hunters illegally detained Magnus and when they were done, they successfully and purposefully opened a rift and framed demons for it.

And then they’d figured out how to hack into the database and insisted that Magnus have the honor of rewriting his own, Cat’s, and Ragnor’s clave sanctioned and bigoted files. 

Magnus had done so with a level of delirious pettiness that he’s never matched since.

And now, centuries later, truth and lies are so intermingled now that the clave will never truly understand the danger Magnus and his family are capable of being.

“He—” and Magnus sighs, “he unlocked something in me. I mean, he’s gorgeous.  Normally I'm trying to burn off someone's runes but when I see them on him, I want to lick them.” 

Across the pond, Ragnor gives a tired sigh and there’s a pop of a bottle after the sudden warp of a portal.

“Ragnor, did you portal to our place in Siberia?” Magnus asks in distracted delight, “are you breaking into the stash there?”

“It’s not breaking in when I own part of it.” Ragnor grumbles, “and if you mean this dishwater that you and Cat made out of magically grown potatoes. Yes, I’m drinking your awful and disgracefully potent potato juice. Now tell me more of this lovely boy you want to fuck who also makes your heart flutter. I’m somewhere with much more tolerable weather finally.”

“Heat exhaustion makes you such a delight,” Magnus grumbles and sits, mournfully taking a sip of his tea. “And you couldn’t have just portaled here?”

“I’ve been to New York this time of the year. It’s disgusting.”

“You think New York is disgusting at all times of the year.”

“Yes, but this is the worst.” 

Magnus settles into his chair and stares out the window, “I could portal to you?” He offers hopefully and Ragnor swears at him in ancient greek. 

“If you come, you’re going to be sad and upset and I will fall for your pathetic eyes and will ply you with alcohol and pat your head and then this will start all over again tomorrow.” 

Magnus shrugs even though Ragnor can’t see it, because Ragnor isn’t wrong. 

“Now ducky—” And Magnus can imagine Ragnor settling into his favorite armchair, the tobacco he and Cat fight over being lit. “Tell me about your laddie love, and I’ll help you figure out what we’re going to tell Cat.  Otherwise, we might end up wiping out a second Institute.” 

Magnus takes a deep drain of tea and when he reaches the bottom, he summons himself a nice oolong. 

“How much am I going to need for this conversation?” Ragnor asks him and Magnus pauses to give that due and proper consideration.

“One of Cat’s potions, at least half a bottle of the good stuff and a sobering spell in the middle so you can still be coherent when you end up finishing the bottle off.” 

Ragnor curses viciously in ten languages that Magnus’ knows and one that he doesn’t.

It’s been centuries and Ragnor and Cat have both insisted on sharing at least one single language Magnus doesn’t know.

It’s so they can curse out his life choices without actively berating him. 

It’s a beautiful solution and the only complaint is that every once in a while Magnus accidentally learns the language via pure osmosis, and then Cat and Ragnor have to go learn a new one.

“But my dear, why?” 

And Magnus knows it’s the closest Ragnor will let himself come to actively disapproving of something Magnus is sure about.

“He killed for me.” Magnus says with a pleased hum at the memory, “a circle member. And then later when his team followed me home, he laughed at my rather brilliant pun and nearly fell over himself when we officially met. We fought together, he turned his back to me.” 

“Are you sure he’s a shadowhunter?” Ragnor asks dubiously, “that's not much like them.”

“He terrified everyone else.” Magnus admits, “and the only time I saw a hint of softness on his face was when he looked at me. You know I wouldn’t misinterpret something like that, not again.” 

Because Magnus would never let himself fall for something like Camille’s sweet smile and the malice that had been hidden in her dead eyes. The poison that was never noticed because it was hidden with sweet touches and averted gazes and murmured words that Magnus can never quite remember.

“Also he very much doesn’t know what to do with himself, or me, when we’re in the same room.” Magnus has been thoroughly charmed, even more than when he first saw the shadowhunter. “He’s going to be mine, Ragnor.  I can tell.”

“Then you need to be aggressive about it,” Ragnor tells him, “you know what nephilim blooded are like. Don’t let him question what you want from him. Prove your interest even.”

“They are going to need a lot of hand holding. Clarissa is shockingly like her parents, very mercenary when it comes to something she wants. And Alexander’s brother is also rather invested in what she wants. I wouldn’t mind helping them for the pleasure of his company.” 

“Oh for the love of—” and a portal opens and Ragnor steps through.  One of the bonnets Cat specially ordered for him is tucked about his curls and horns and he’s got an entire bottle that he keeps clutched to his chest.

The smell of cherrywood and tobacco fills his loft and Magnus’ inhales, deeply.

“I thought you were denying yourself the pleasure of my company?” Magnus asks and he summons Ragnor’s armchair — the one he only brings out for his dear cabbage.

“More like trying to hold onto the dregs of my sanity.” Is muttered and Ragnor plops into the chair and leans back, popping his slippered toes up as it reclines.

“Now, tell me your plan. In detail. So I can lovingly  rip it to shreds.”

“Well, I’m very obviously not what he’s used to. But that didn’t seem like a deterrent, so I thought I’d test the limits of my style to see what he responds to.”

“Magnus, if he responded well to this look. Why change it?”

“Isn’t it a bit much?” Magnus asks and Ragnor flicks him with magic, just enough that it feels like Magnus’ cheek is being pinched. 

“If you were too much, he wouldn’t have been interested. You’ll confuse the lad if you change yourself so suddenly. He’ll get whiplash!” and Ragnor tuts and summons his pipe, “now, explain that other nonsense you mentioned planning?”

Magnus explains the attack, the relocation of his loft and his dismissal of the shadowhunters until they’d all had a full shift of sleep.

“So you have something they need, yes?” Ragnor asks, “you sent them away to have a night to recover before the summoning? And you were planning on what afterwards?”

Magnus frowns and thinks, “I mean Jocelyn did create quite a problem. I was thinking I could offer my services, use whatever Clarissa thinks I owe her to get close. As much as I’d prefer to steer clear, she does give me an excuse to see him.”

“Or, you could invite him over to plan the ritual. Tell him you need to go over it, ask him to come over because of confidentiality. Make it a casual business affair, lure him in with work and get him to stay with charm. You have bloody enough of it.”

Magnus coos and blows Ragnor a kiss, “should I try to woo you, dearest?” Magnus teases and then he outright cackles at the grimace of disgust on Ragnor’s face.

“I’ll pass on that lovely offer, thank you ducky. Now, first things first. We’re moving your loft again. You can’t possibly stay here with shadowhunters knowing left and right where you live.  It’s ludicrous.  Seal off a warehouse and summon the demon there, don’t let anyone besides your prey in your space Magnus, not with how the world is turning these days.”

And the feral glint in Ragnor’s eyes is well hidden, but he’s who Magnus’ learned to temper and tame his own edge from.

“How do I get him over by himself, without his entourage?” Magnus realizes, several hours later, when Ragnor is blearily hiccuping at him. Ragnor’s favorite cold noodle dish, bibim guksu, half eaten and the bottle he started with now empty. 

“Give me your phone.” Ragnor slurs and Magnus hands it away, completely sober as he puts his future into Ragnor’s drunk and slovenly hands.

“There.”

Ragnor gives Magnus a judgemental look and sighs as he sobers himself up a bit and hands the phone back.

“Magnus, from what you’ve said, the poor lad is being overrun. In what is supposed to be the place he’s listened to and respected, by the people he’s supposed to trust to have his back. He’ll misunderstand something terrible if you’re not careful. He won’t know the risk you’re taking, only the risk he is. He’s young and he’s clearly a romantic if the way you say he only goes soft around you happens. This isn’t a walk in the park for him, he’s not doing this to stick it to the clave.” And Ragnor gives a small belch and takes another bite of his noodles, “so, you give him another option. You make yourself a place he considers safe.”

“I’m a warlock.” Magnus says dryly and waggles his magic clad fingers. “He’s a shadowhunter. That’s a little much at this point.”

“Yes and you want to be his warlock boyfriend. So get with the program ducky, or change the channel.” And Ragnor stops talking to eat before he finally dabs his mouth and gives Magnus a stern glare. “You can read the message now. He replied about thirty seconds after I sent it.”

Magnus nearly falls off his sofa as he rushes to get the phone he’s been hesitant to look at.

“Ragnor, why did you tell him I need his help privately to prepare the ritual, and that I needed to be without distraction? He’s going to assume so many things.”

“Yes.  He’s going to assume you want competent help. He already responded, if you’d bothered reading, ‘understood. I’ll keep the others contained. Where do I meet you?” Ragnor mocks the lovesick noise Magnus makes but Magnus doesn’t care.

“He just agreed, like that.” Magnus marvels, “so easily. I could set any location, this silly, precious boy.” 

“You did say he was soft for you.”

“He’s a nephilim commander.” Magnus shoots back, “the fact that he killed a circle member rather than go for me was the first surprise. The fact that he melts for me seemed like a bonus to an overall nice surprise. I didn’t think—” and Magnus feels himself flush, “well, I didn’t realize that I was what had such an impact on him. I thought he was just—”

And Magnus isn’t sure what he thought, but he does know that no other nephilim commander would ever agree to Magnus’ text like Alexander did. 

And it speaks less to his decency as a being and more that he also has a very untraditional interest in Magnus.

Ragnor lets out another series of curses, several he’s probably learned from Raphael and Magnus is reminded of how much he regrets introducing the two.

“Let me see him, this shadowhunter of yours. Show me what he looks like with others, and how he looked at you.”

And Magnus does, summoning several memories and Ragnor goes through them with increasing levels of incredulousness.

“Magnus, I will eat my bonnet if that boy has ever had a relationship.”

“Ragnor, did we not see the same long legs and gorgeous face? And that adorable little blush he gets.”

“I did see that—” Ragnor says and he sounds gentle, “but Magnus, not everyone is going to see him like you do. That lad is indeed gone on you, but he’s also terrified by it. You say something to him and it’s like he has to fight to react like he’s used to, because you pull down all his walls without trying. So he doesn’t react the way he thinks he’s supposed to. You’re missing the forest for a very tall tree Magnus. Because I see someone who wants you and doesn’t know what to do with that. Not because it’s you, but because they don’t think they’re allowed. Are you willing to handle that?”

And Magnus, Magnus has never cared about the relationship status of someone he’s dated or fucked as long as they weren’t using him to cheat.

But the implications here — 

The possibility that the mere sight of him is enough to make Alexander cross lines he’s never allowed himself.

It makes Magnus want him even more.

“Mine.” Is all Magnus manages to say and he cheerfully summons a bottle of whiskey, “absolutely mine.”

“Oh for the love of—” And Ragnor is watching him, tired and fond and full of love and then Ragnor is shaking his head. “All right then. I suppose I’d better dust off my home in Quebec. I’m not leaving you here to muddle through nephilim courting on your own and Cat insists on living like a mortal and has a real job.” 

They both share a look of mutual disgust. 

“Now ducky, pour me a glass and remind me which demon you fed the child’s memories too. We’ll have to figure out the best ritual to retrieve them. Maybe we can use one where everyone but you and the anchor is knocked out. Nothing much better than a demon-summoning for a picnic and some flirting."

I’ve been thinking about your prompt where Alec is not a morning person in the petals vs and it’s started a bit of a spiral lol. What happens when Alec wakes up first?

I headcannon that Magnus has deep abandonment issues, especially with past lovers leaving before he wakes whether from being one night stands or partners who assume that they should leave and let him rest since he’s so busy. Not realizing he wakes to a cold bed and his wards letting him know someone has left. This leads to him covering Alec with tracking charms and other spells so they can never be forcefully separated even by death. (I also hc that Alec texts Magnus updates when he’s had to change areas unexpectedly when patrolling or called in for meetings so Magnus doesn’t panic when the trackers go to areas where Alec hadn’t told him he’d be)

So what happens when Alec wakes first? Does he wake Magnus enough to let him know he’s going to the other room and make enough noise to let Magnus know he’s there? Does he stay reading reports or books til Magnus stirs? Some third option I’m not creative enough to come up with?

Sorry this was so long and rambley I’ve just had thoughts. I hope you’re able to find some inspiration from this and if not that’s fine! Can be sfw or nsfw

this is specifically petals verse and for the most part, it would take until Magnus and Alec were super close for Magnus to not notice him leaving. because of how high strung everyone is. so this is kind of worse because it doesn't happen until after their relationship is pretty steady which means it hits Magnus harder. it also doesn't happen super early on because 1) Magnus is going to want to wake first during the first few months of a shadowhunter relationship no matter how much he likes and trusts Alec its just instinct. also I feel like during the tension, Alec would tell Magnus just because of safety reasons and got distracted in times of general peace.

also no this was great I found so much inspiration, too much inspiration I got distracted by the first half and took off! I hope you enjoy!

in his wake petals first

The first time Alec wakes first and leaves — deliberately slipping away without a word to tiredly deal with a problem — is the last time he makes that mistake.

The first clue is the fire messages that bombard him the same time as his phone starts buzzing.  Unfortunately that’s right when the fight starts and so Alec has to settle for snatching them out of the air and shoving them in his pocket between shooting arrows and then eventually, pulling out his own sword.

It’s a nightmare of a fight.

The sheer amount of wind and rain mean that no one can see, even with their heat runes activated, night vision runes or their second eyelids protecting their eyes, nothing helps.

Alec gets back to the Institute, hauling a bedraggled Clearwater tucked over his shoulder.  He’s still lecturing the team who did the initial raid and instead of execution of demons, instead inciting a stampede when he becomes aware that Magnus is here.

Magnus is here and without a smile or a flower to twirl flirtatiously at Alec.

Clearwater is hauled away from him by Andrew before Alec even realizes anything beyond Magnus.

It’s way too early for Magnus to be up.

The only reason Alec’s up at all is because in the sewers the demons can breed regardless of the time of day.

“Why aren’t you asleep?” Alec asks tiredly, wondering if he’s dreaming, because he tried so very hard not to wake Magnus up and Alec can’t help his pout. “You’re supposed to be sleeping.”

Magnus makes a noise that Alec can’t decipher through the exhaustion hitting him — he’d only slept two hours at most — and while he can go quite a bit longer. It’s been one of those weeks.  Whatever the noise translates to, it makes several of his shadowhunters step back, as if getting out of the way.

“I’m taking my Alexander back.”

Alec is pretty sure that sentence isn’t technically grammatically correct, but it is correct in that Alec belongs to Magnus and they’re going back somewhere. So he doesn’t say anything. Despite the fact that he suddenly has the very tired urge to tease Magnus, anything really to get that frenetic, almost desperate energy away from him.

Mirai appears and is directing the hunters and while Alec isn’t injured, he had planned on just crashing into his Institute bed.  The fact that now he gets to go back to their bed is perfect.

Magnus tries very hard to breathe evenly, because Alexander is either so exhausted he’s drunk on it or his beloved is concussed. Considering that his pupils seem fine and he’s also rubbing his cheek against Magnus’ hair, he’s just tired.

Which is understandable, considering he’s been running on very little sleep and has been running an Institute struggling with a demon flu.

However, considering that Magnus woke up overheated and alone and without the heartbeat that soothes him or the body that cools him, he is not pleased.

Alexander disappeared, like a wraith into the night.  

Not just a shadowhunter but a shadow himself and Magnus hadn’t even realized he was gone.  At first Magnus had thought Alexander was just somewhere in the loft, not unusual and certainly not a problem but then the wards had echoed back hollow and empty.

Void of Alexander.

It takes a minute and a hot drink and then Alexander is the one grabbing Magnus and pulling him into a tight, nearly suffocating embrace.

Magnus closes his eyes, letting himself breath for a moment and wishing Alexander could hold him tightly enough that they could never part.

“I didn’t even realize you were gone from the loft.” Magnus finally lets out a secret he doesn’t wish to part with. “I woke up to find you missing, darling. Like you’d left me. Please. Wake me next time.”

“I will.” Alexander promises, even though just words will never be enough for the hollow panic gnawing at Magnus’ bones. “We’ll fix it, tomorrow. Okay?”

The ‘okay’ Magnus echoes back feels as hollow as his heart and sleep comes slowly, despite how easily Alexander rests in his arms.

Alec wakes up first again.

He’s not really sure how or why since he prefers to wake after Magnus — despite sometimes lacking in cuddles — and he’s exhausted.

Still.

However this does give him a bit of time and he knows exactly what he wants and needs to do, for both Magnus and his sake.

Enough of his weapons are decorated with the stone he’s looking for that he can summon an old, family dagger and use one of his arrowheads to pry it off with.  After that all it takes is a quick slash of the point of his stele against his palm and then he’s holding the crystal tightly.

One minute turns into ten and then Magnus is waking up, rustling with movement and his golden eyes are sharp even as his voice is hoarse with sleep.

“Are you bleeding in my bed?”

“Isn’t it my bed too?” Alec asks gently, keeping his voice soft and light and full of love.

Magnus gives him a dark glower, clearly not pleased with the manipulation that’s already working on him.

“It’s only your bed when you behave and do things like ‘not bleed without permission’.” Magnus huffs and Alec wants desperately to continue teasing him, however Magnus is clearly at his limit.

“I was making something for you, I figured you’d rather I bleed in bed than risk waking with me somewhere else again.”

Magnus’ fingers tighten around his ribs and that’s all the answer Alec needs.

“Continue.”

“We both know that nephilim are hard to track, especially without a bloodstone.” 

Magnus nods in agreement and then his eyes spark with delight and wonder, not dread. 

“Did you make me such a crystal, darling?”

Alec knows this is just the beginning.  

Offering this isn’t just a one time thing.  

Magnus is going to take it as the permission it’s meant to be.  Alec won’t be getting out of here without Magnus’ magic on him or in him one way or another, yet that’s all he wants in life.

Magnus shouldn’t have to fight his own instincts and fears. Alec doesn’t yet know all the trauma that Magnus’ heart holds but he knows enough to know that Magnus has needs he doesn’t understand.

And Alec knows enough that if he wants Magnus to be confident in not only himself, but their relationship, then he needs to take the first step this time.

“I did. We take the same type of crystal as the tip of a stele and share blood with it until the color has changed completely.  It’s mostly used in heirlooms but also to track loved ones.”

Alec holds his hand out, palm still bleeding and yet despite the tang of copper in the air, no blood falls past his clenched knuckles.  Slowly he opens his fingers and there, pressing like an oath to an open cut, the crystal drinks greedily from Alec’s veins.

AN: Magnus also starts getting cc'd in patrol emails by Mirai and co at the Institute. basically he gets the routes and rundowns of Alec's patrols to help him keep track.

i also headcanon that at one point he has a magical map of New York in his office connected to the leylines and Alexander's bloodstone and can see exactly where Alexander is.

magnus is a bit more hesitant about admitting just all how he wants to track Alec because 1) its pretty invasive 2) he's never actually had a partner equally want to be tracked and 3) he can't afford to do it without Alec knowing. even if alec was okay with it, in petals verse the political backlash would be pretty bad.

so this fic has Alec stepping up (because Magnus brings him flowers and smiles and safety and he wants to do the same) and basically telling Magnus 'hey, i'm going to match your intensity and protectiveness and possessiveness anyway you need.'

which Magnus is thrilled by.

from now on Alec does stuff like read, works on his tablet, he also just likes snuggling back up to Magnus. Except sometimes he does get bored and then he'll normally give Magnus some soft sleepy cheek or forehead kisses and nuzzle him until he gets a half-awake Magnus and then lets him know where he'll be (like on the roof or the other room)

if Alec is leaving the lair he wakes Magnus up full stop. like 'hi babe I know you're exhausted but i'm being called in for an emergency. i'll keep my phone on me and asmuch blood in me as I can for tracking purposes. I love you, try to go back to sleep.'

kind of a thing.

a few times Alec will just pick Magnus up and carry him to the rooftop bed or the couch in the living room. it depends on Magnus' mood the nigh before because Alec really only does that if he's too antsy to stay in bed but doesn't think Magnus will react well to an empty bed.

Simon pauses at the door, wondering why he’s hesitating when he has every right to be here.

Probably.

Except he and Magnus have bonded, definitely.  Maybe not over everything, but at least over raiding Camille’s house that one time.

So they’ve definitely bonded enough that Magnus most likely won’t kill Simon for showing up out of nowhere with a problem that Simon definitely can’t fix on his own.

“Why are you here?” Simon can’t help his dismay or the way his voice waivers at the sight of a tall, deadly shadowhunter where he expected a well-dressed warlock.

“I live here, Simon.”

Simon swears that Alec’s said the exact same thing about the Institute which means one of them has to be a lie, right?

He must say some part of his thought process outloud, because Alec is frowning at him, arms crossed over his chest. 

“I need to talk to Magnus.”

“It’s eleven in the morning, Simon.  Magnus is asleep and he’s going to stay that way for several hours. He’s also not going to be happy about the fact that you woke me up, let alone if you also wake him up.”

Simon whimpers a little, but he needs the help.  He really does and something in his expression or demeanor must give him away.  Alec is pinching his nose but motioning Simon inside and then Alec’s sending a fire message.

A moment later a message is sent back, but to Simon this time and he winces because it’s from Raphael.

‘Do not fuck this up.’ 

So Raphael has no faith in him, or — Simon sneaks a glance at Alec — way too much faith.

“You’re free to sit here and wait. Don’t touch anything. I’ll be back when Magnus wakes up.”

At that point, Simon realizes he’s not in the semi-familiar loft of Magnus but inside a neat, spacious room.  There are windows with sun-veils and a bookcase filled along with a small tablet and it’s very close to what Simon guesses a magical waiting room would be like.

“Wait, where are you going?”

“Back to bed, with Magnus. You’re welcome to wait as long as you need to.”

Simon blinks at the door shutting behind Alec and even as vampire speed has him up and across the room, the door seals shut.  Oh the one to leave is still there and Simon glares at longingly.  

As he sits back down and pokes at the tablet which is connected to a variety of streaming services and libraries, Simon decides this isn’t the worst thing he’s done and certainly is probably one of the safer places he’s been.

Also he should probably be thankful that Alec didn’t try to stay and keep him company.  Simon couldn’t have handled that, even if he did panic when Alec first left him alone.

Magnus can tell the day will be a terrible one the moment he feels sunlight on his eyelids.  Sunlight that is normally rather conveniently blocked by Alexander’s fluffy hair and broad shoulders.

The space beside him is empty and slowly warming from the sun, the pillow still indented but rising and Magnus’ anger and panic nearly flare when Alexander slips back into the room.

“Darling—” Magnus breathes out because the nightmares have held him too tightly as of late.  

Alexander is there in a mere second, steady and cool and pulling Magnus into his arms and pressing soothing kisses to his hair.

“Simon’s here.” Is not what he expects to hear and all of the lovely calm that Alexander’s touch brought shatters.

“Is he?” Magnus can recognize the dangerous edge to his voice and knows it’s unwarranted, except Simon is still an intruder. 

“In the waiting room. I figured he could test it out for us.” 

Magnus calms at the realization, sleepiness coiling in his belly alongside pleasure.

“It worked then?”

“Like a charm.” Alexander teases and kisses his brow, “and I’m back until you wake for good. So come cuddle me and fall back asleep, Magnus.”

It’s hardly a request Magnus wants to or is going to deny and Alexander’s arms embrace him so willingly and with such fervor as sleep snares him back into her web.

Lips press again to his hair and Magnus gets greedy fingers on the skin of Alexander’s chest and waist and then back before he pauses on the verge of sleep.

“Did you open the door shirtless?”

Alexander sighs, “it was only Simon.”

Only Simon.

As if that truly makes it any better.

It could have been anyone and while Alexander can’t be hurt with the wards intact, he is far too tempting half-naked and sleep-soft for him to be answering the door fresh from bed! 

Magnus curls tighter around his boy and lets his lips press against the steady pulse of Alexander’s neck.

I dont know what magnus is assuming but i assure you, simon did not consider alec sleep-soft or tempting beyond ‘looks like he could kill me, would kill me. Only magnus’ cinnamon roll’.

If you’ve seen howl’s moving castle? Magnus set up a door spin card that can open to a waiting room  and office to keep people out of his more private spaces. Alec was testing it out. No he did not ask simon or tell him it’s an experiment. He figures simon is durable enough to handle if anything goes wrong and if not, well he did wake them up.
