New prints for sale in my shop! Limited addition of 100. These images come from a collaboration I did with Left Bank Ciders in Catskill, New York creating labels for their 2022 co fermented ciders! The animals combined in each of these prints are from the area surrounding the cider house. They are blended together to represent the co fermented ciders they create using foraged and locally sourced fruits! We wanted these illustrations to feel as gnarly and unique as the ciders are. Turned out to be one of the most exciting and fun projects I’ve done in a while! There are are three in the set! It would mean a lot to me if you checked them out!

I’ve been thinking a lot about old trees. In my backyard here in Catskill, there is the stump of an old butternut tree. I have yet to measure it, but it must be at least 5-6 feet in diameter. It is old and rotten. Years of mowing has shaved it down to its roots. Today it is covered in mugwort, mushrooms and mosses. For hundreds of years it must’ve been growing in that spot. I never saw it standing. I always wish I had.

Recently, a significant tree to many people in the area was cut down due to rot. It was beautiful. I passed it every day. It was obviously much older than the sidewalks that it refused to cooperate with. What intrigued me the most was that after it was cut down, I heard a flood of stories about this tree. It seemed to have significance to everyone I met.

I wonder how many stories there are about the tree that was once in my backyard. I wonder who keeps these stories. I wonder what my house looked like when it was still in the shade of this massive tree. I wonder about the tree before my house was beneath it. I wonder who was the last to harvest and roast the butternuts.

Skunk- Lillian Melcher -2022

This painting has meant so much to me this past year. It started as a fun idea inspired by the skunk that lived under my porch.

A few months after I began painting that little friend we found out we would have to leave that apartment. Luckily we found ourselves in a new home. While I settled , unpacked and regrouped I was so lucky to have my skunk still with me. On good and bad days I would paint a leaf, or a flower or a slug! I could add to this on days I couldn’t do anything else. I added pansies after a trip to Maine and planting some in my boyfriend’s mothers yard. I added insects eating the leaves after starting my own garden and meeting all my tiny neighbors.

Today I decided he was done. And I love him. And he is going to someone I care for very much. I’m not sure who will keep me company in my studio once he is gone but I am excited to find out. I hope you all have a place you can go these days like I went to my skunk.
