Happy Saturday evening, Neris Nation! (Or Sunday morning/afternoon, depending on your timezone!) We've been a little quiet this week here in Neris Nation HQ with real life stuff, but we are BACK with a vengeance tonight with a humdinger of a fic rec for you: the hurt, the dark, the light, the flame by the fabulous wordsmith, @thenwhokilledtheworld!
Fic summary:
“It’s the witch,” Beron said softly. Eris’ first thought was Briallyn. What had his father allowed to happen that could be worse than what he'd already done?
“The Archeron witch.”
Eris didn’t breathe.
“There’s an eighth Court in Prythian.”
One night on the hike in the mountains, Nesta disappears from the Night Court.
First off, y'all, that title. Inspired by Hozier's As It Was, it sets the stage for a gorgeously crafted piece of writing chock full of some of the best worldbuilding and characterization that we've ever seen in fanfic. And while yes, this is a Nesta/Eris fic, so, SO many characters get the spotlight: canon and original. We've got Valkyries. We've got Vansiblings. We've got the Inner Circle (though small head's up, it's a pretty IC-critical fic). We've got hags and a bigass tree and Beron and everyone shines.
As always, because we're incurably nosy, we reached out to @thenwhokilledtheworld for the backstory and inspiration of this fic:
"I wanted Nesta to have a home that was hers, and i really wanted her to have relationships with older women who cared about her. It started there. And then I wanted her to fall in love without the romance being shorthand for healing. I wanted a truly epic climax to their arcs: family betrayal, knives made of magic thorns, mind control, ballroom dancing, fighting your evil fire-wolf dad hand to hand, all the bells and whistles. Also got physically possessed by the idea of Neris being really horny about calling each other husband and wife. It’s a found family fic at its heart, I think."

Like I know Mor is canonically gay and she does have her moments but to me she is the straightest member of the IC. Amren doesn't even conceive of gender, Cassian is in Love with Rhys and Azriel, Azriel is the most gay repressed man of all time and Rhys is keeping two boy toys around while pining after his foreign prince. And Mor is the gay one??? She'll come out and they'll all be confused bc they thought she was the token straight.

After the initial sketch, I pretty much copy-pasted borzoi photos in different positions and then traced them. Is it cheating? Idk, but 13 dogs is a lot! 😅 Then it was a matter of adjusting lights and shadows to be consistent. The illusion of details is done with textured brushes.
Thank you for giving me a challenge like this, the whole idea of commissioning azris artist to honor azris creators is so amazing and lovely, and i loved working on it ❤️

12. What would their favorite IRL vacation destination be?
The Scottish Highlands. Give them misty mountains, ancient castle ruins, secluded lochs, winding roads through endless green, cozy inns with crackling fireplaces, and just enough rain to justify staying in all afternoon with a good bottle of whisky. They're the kind of couple who would hike for hours to reach a forgotten ruin, then spend the evening debating its history over dinner (Or maybe that was my own honeymoon and I'm nostalgic about it).
I can also see Tunisia as a less gloomy option. Ancient Carthaginian and Roman ruins, the Sahara at sunset, hidden desert oases, and luxury riads feel like exactly the sort of trip they'd splurge on.
Also, Eris would absolutely enjoy picking a slightly less obvious destination and being insufferably smug about having better taste than everyone else. He is not going where everyone goes. He is going somewhere ancient, beautiful, inconvenient to reach, and “far more interesting, actually.”
22. What would be their most scandalous court rumor?
Idk, I feel like Eris and Nesta are pretty strong willed people and the Autumn Court is very stuck up and they had centuries of a pretty much invisible LoA... So I think it would be very easy to shock them 😅
The juiciest rumor right now is that one day Eris showed up to council wearing new bracelets. He was a little tense, fingers twitching every time they pulsed, while Nesta sat beside him with a tiny satisfied smirk.
Rumors say they’re part of their private restraint-and-release games. The bracelets keep him magically edged and denied for hours (sometimes days). While using the bracelet, he can only cum when Nesta gives permission. They apparently got so lost in their morning session that he forgot to take them off before the meeting.
