Uhura laughed and tapped her earpiece.  “I’m listening, Captain.  There’s a lot of subspace chatter that is tuned out in a routine day to make room for the more important things.  But if you filter through all of it, you can sometimes make out bits of interested...well, gossip basically.  I’m also relearning a lot of Orion slang because the rate at which their language develops is actually fascinating.”  It was particularly due to them being a slaving culture and kidnapping a lot of different species and adopting bits into their language- you could always tell the other dominate species in a sector of space by the vernacular of the resident Orions.  

“And it’s not like I could sleep.”  It happened sometimes, though usually Uhura tended more towards seeking out company instead of the voices among the stars. One had to have more hobbies then the job, after all.  “So I guess we keep each other company until everyone else decides to join us, Captain.”

Uhura is bisexual, with a slight preference for ladies.  Her first girlfriend, which she met in Starfleet, was an Orion.  Because of this liaison, she isn’t nearly as affected by the Orion pheromones as some people.  Doesn’t mean that she doesn’t still get knocked on pretty hard by them, but it’s a little less.

But dancing, that was not a skill in the young navigators repertoire. He had all the grace of a newly born foal trying to walk, and he seemed to know it, if his reaction to getting caught in the act was any indication.

“Um, how long have you been there?”

“Oh, long enough.”  Uhura replied as she righted Pavel with a smile.  

“I didn’t want to interrupt your practice.”  She had been curious, at first, as to what exercise Chekov was doing.  Then she just couldn’t let him fall.  “Come on,” she gently encouraged him, “try again.  You nearly had it.”  Perhaps not nearly, but Uhura is pretty sure Chekov can figure this out- with a few pointers if she has to.
