Jane Austen: this is Henry Tilney-
George Austen: aw, like our Henry, Jane? How nice.
Jane Austen: yes, Dad- he has his wit, too. He is a future clergyman and he is kind of a dork.
George Austen, a clergyman: *laughing* is he now.
Jane Austen: this is Edward Ferrars, a future clergyman who could've avoided most of his plot if he had been good at communicating his feelings.
George Austen, a clergyman: *still laughing* ah, is that so? What an interesting fellow you have written, Jane.
Jane Austen: and this is Mr Collins, he's a fully-realized clergyman and also fully-realized idiot that believes himself both intelligent and important-
George Austen, a clergyman: *raising an eyebrow* ah, really-
Jane Austen, writing: also, there is Mr Elton, who is also a clergyman, and he also considers himself way more important than he actually is.
George Austen, a clergyman: *frowning* okay.
Jane Austen: and here is Edmund Bertram. He is a clergyman and a decent man-
George Austen, a clergyman: *relaxing* oh-
jane Austen: - but he is easily swayed and a bit of a hypocrite-
George Austen, a clergyman: Jane, there is something you want to tell me?
The Good Place (2016-2020)
brah
The Good Place’s take on morality is so important to me. It never suggests that being good is easy or straightforward - quite the opposite - but it says, over and over again, that we need to try because we’re all people and we all matter.
Sometimes classics can be improved upon.
The Tree Who Set Healthy Boundaries : an alternate ending for Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree by Topher Payne 💯🌳❤️
https://www.topherpayne.com/giving-tree?
I’d always hated The Giving Tree as a kid, but I never realized how much I needed this alternate ending until just now.
I was in line at Aldi and this girl with two toddlers in front of me had her card declined and she looked so fucking sad and said “let me call my husband real quick” and it was only 18 dollars, so I just paid for it, and she was very sweet and then as she walked off, the lady behind me said `”You know that was probably a scam, right?” and like, even if it was, like what a sad fucking scam, right? 18 dollars at the Aldi. If you’re “scamming” me for some Tyson chicken and apple juice and cauliflower, then just take my fucking money.
“A scam” people are fucking wild.
This happened to me, too. A woman had used WIC for the majority of her stuff (which I say from personal experience is such a long and embarrassing process) and to buy the remainder of her groceries, which included diapers and wipes, she used a card, and it got declined. I bought the other $30 of her groceries because hey, I’ve been there, and now I’m not. She was extremely emotional and began to cry and even hugged me. My mom called me on the drive home and could tell I had been crying myself, asked what was wrong, and when I told her what happened, she berated me for being “duped.” I couldn’t believe she could be so disappointed in one of her children for doing something- nice? Is that the hill you want to die on? Getting mad about people needing groceries?
I once paid for a woman’s bill at the vet…it wasn’t a big one, but she was trying to pay for some medication for her dog, and her card was declined. And her lip started trembling, and she says “I don’t get paid until Tuesday, would he be ok until then?”
So I just told them to add the $20 something onto my bill, and I thought she was going to break down crying right there.
And I don’t care if it was a scam or not. Just do nice things for people sometimes.
Do good recklessly.
I think “Do good recklessly” would be fantastic word art to hang on one’s wall. Artistic people, go!
So this has happened to me but from the other side. Several years ago when my oldest was around three or so, I had my debit card decline at Walmart. It wasn’t a scam or a mistake, I was genuinely broke. Out of money. I checked my bank and discovered I had something like 7 dollars left to my name and a hungry kid and nothing to eat at home. So I sat there trying to come up with the best way to stretch that tiny amount of money to feed my kid. Not even to feed me. I can live on popcorn or something if I have to but my kid was three and he had to eat. So there I am trying really hard not to cry while I slowly take things out of my basket to get it down to under 7 bucks, when a lady tapped me on the shoulder. I looked up and she smiled at me and started putting the things back in my cart. I opened my mouth to tell her that I didn’t have the money for them but she stopped me right away and said “Don’t worry about it. It’s gonna be fine.” Then she handed the cashier her credit card and said “Ring up all of it.” My kid got to eat because of her. I got to eat because of her. I had laundry soap and deodorant because of her. She could’ve just ignored me silently struggling in that line. She could’ve decided I was a scam and gone home feeling good about avoiding being duped. But instead she chose to help me and she saved us. So maybe the person struggling in front of you is trying to put one over on you or maybe they are just sad and broke and trying to figure out what to do. You get to decide which you want to believe and what you want to do. But I’ll tell y’all, no one has ever been more beautiful to me than that lady in that line who saved me and my baby. Be like her. Be beautiful.
Do good recklessly
DO BETTER. BE BETTER. STRIVE TO BE BETTER.
DO GOOD RECKLESSLY
One time, my dad and I were living the grocery store and there was a guy outside asking for money to buy some stuff to take home for his kids. It was around Christmas time. My dad asked him if he could give him groceries instead of money, and the guy immediately said yes, so my dad gave him one of everything we bought (meat, rice, some chocolates, milk, oil). At that time, my dad hadn’t gotten his paycheck because the company he worked for was going through a tough time, but he didn’t care, he saw an opportunity to help someone and he did.
Another time, my dad gave 50 bucks to a guy who said he needed to buy medicine for his kids. I told my dad he was probably going to spend the money on alcohol or something, but my dad said that “whether he was lying or not says something about HIS character, but hearing someone in need and choosing not to help when I have the means to says something about mine”.
I never forget that.
“whether he was lying or not says something about HIS character, but hearing someone in need and choosing not to help when I have the means to says something about mine”
louder, for the people in the back
Not only did they use the life of a bystander, they literally pushed her car closer to use her for cover. They could have taken her out of the car, or anything else. It no they pushed her into the line of fire to die.
Hey guys remember this
don’t forget
What was that about feeling unsafe without cops?
so a racist got utterly demolished in less than 30 seconds on the New Zealand morning news on Monday and it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen
who knew a white guy could be capable of such an iconic response, he knows what’s up and is having none of that shit, every other white guy take notes tbh
I love that he said Pakeha
Can someone write what its being said in this?
Male co-host: We have had a whole heap of feedback regarding Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis’s proposal to institute a prison run on Māori values into New Zealand. He’s looking at potentially establishing this prison up north. It isn’t Labour policy just yet, it’s just an idea of Kelvin Davis’s. And this has been really really divisive on our Facebook page this morning. (sarcastically) Here I think we have the single greatest email, the single greatest message we have ever had on breakfast.
(clears throat deliberately) “’Janice’ says: Good morning. I’m sick of hearing that Māori need different treatment. If they don’t want to live in our society, then maybe we should put them all on an island and leave them to it.”
Male co-host: “Janice. That is LITERALLY what happened! That is the history of our country. Last I checked, Māori WERE on an island, they were left to it, and then Pākehā (Māori term for white New Zealanders) turned up and look how that worked out. But thank you very much for that brilliant insight. Goodness me. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, they actually-“
Female co-host: “Actually, you can’t even get angry, you just actually need to laugh and then screw it up and put it under the desk. Just when you thought-“
Male co-host: (mimicking letter) “’Put them all on an island, leave them to it.’ Yeah. What a great idea that is Janice.
I really need “What a great idea that is, Janice.” to be a meme filled with those stupid complete cognitive dissonance bigoted statements.
Janice is clearly Karen’s Kiwi Cousin.

Wholesome compares to cops killing innocent people in America.
Splatoon cops
Oh and also -
Why don’t you roll up in a futon and maybe you’ll calm down?
This is one of the dumbest takes I’ve ever seen about the police, people heard this and I see unironic comments saying “uwu japan so soft and sweet compared to barbarian usa.” Absolute nonsense!
Japan “boasts” of a whopping 99% conviction rate in criminal cases. This is statistically horseshit, and the only way to “achieve” such a feat is through a lot of lying and through the assumption that, because someone’s been arrested, then that person must be guilty.
The way Japanese law enforcement manages to convict someone, even for minor offences, is to hold them in cells under constant interrogation until they break down and sign a legal confession. The punishment can range from paying a fine to jail time, but the thing is that indefinite detention is a clear violation of human rights. Often they do it without citing any charges. Lawyers can’t access their clients. The police do not make their methods transparent. Why do you think Ace Attorney has you playing on the side of the defense? Because prosecutors and the police often work together to ensure a conviction as quickly as possible. The simple act of being arrested often means you’re fucked. And that’s not even getting into what that means for your social image and employment prospects. Japan also has the death penalty.
That quirky news report about Japanese crime being so nonexistent that cops don’t have anything to do? A total myth. Police make up honeypot traps over trivialities like stolent bikes to amuse themselves while they ignore cases of domestic violence, train chikan, and theft. The police turn a blind eye to organised crime and corruption (the seedy nature of pachinko parlours is an open secret)—often they have close relations with yakuza, and a lot of people say that yakuza aren’t a problem now, but what isn’t a problem about people who make money off child prostitution, loan sharking, and the drug trade?
What about the fact that you can’t film anything if the police don’t want you to? They can totally seize footage related to a detention and destroy it if it doesn’t paint them in a good light. A man was suffocated to death by an officer in front of a police box and the camerographer who filmed the incident was immediately told to turn the footage in to the police.
What about that Nissan exec who was jailed? Sure, no sympathy for corporate types, that’s fine, but isn’t it convenient that pretty much the only high profile arrest was of the Brazilian born French-Lebanese man? Did I mention that the police are racist and xenophobic? If you’re a Nigerian tout in Roppongi the police will absolutely keep a closer eye on you than on the middle aged salaryman groping schoolgirls on the train.
Not convinced yet? How about the fact that leftist activity and group organisation immediately puts people under scrutiny? Does anyone who called the Japanese police “wholesome” want to talk to the Zengakuren student activists who were attacked by them?
Like, it’s good that in Japan there’s a lesser chance of dying at their hands, but I’m honestly baffled that the first reaction people had when reading about them was to fawn and coo instead of getting suspicious over such positive headlines. But the reality is that cops aren’t your friends anywhere. They exist to uphold the status quo, not to really protect people—but that’d be too much of a bummer for the commenters on this thread, apparently. Taking the time to actually read about Japanese police would go against their image of Japan as this desexualised, neutered country where absolutely nothing bad ever happens.

Im reblogging myself in light of current events and because too many people in the notes gushing about “splatoon cops” got on my nerves. Japanese people are also protesting in support of BLM and i’ve already seen sooo many white expat weeaboos angrily screaming about “black politics infiltrating beautiful japan!!” 🤮
