"Paroles, paroles "by Dalida and Alain Delon is.... SO heavily Marion Lavorre/Gentleman coded in my mind, and I'm so frustrated that only french critters might have a chance to know the song and agree with me lmao
Also my voice headcanon for Marion before the animated show was 100% Dalida.
I tried to stick to the existing style & chara designs, only tweaking what I would have done for my (personal!) visions of the characters. You'll see that i barely changed Beau for exemple, because I LOVE her animated design!
Disclaimer: Im just having fun with a little style exercice, there is not an ounce of disrespect towards all of the charater designers & animators of the future M9 serie here, I thank all of them for the hard work of bringing this wonderful crew to life!
Rating the Mighty Nein Animated designs, + how I’d improve them
✨Random disclaimer✨: my opinions are not universal, and the critical role cast can do what they want with their own show. This is just what I would change if I was in charge of the character design. Also, I’ll still be doing these changes with the fact that they’re for animation in mind. Can’t have anything too complex (sadly).
Nott: 8/10. It would have been nice for her to have some of her trinkets on her. Also, her face should be more hidden, so I put more hair and also lowered the hood of her cloak slightly.
Yasha: 10/10. Thank god they made her buff. The only changes I made here were making her boots brown to match her hair ties (nitpicky) and changing her butt muscle cause it was so defined it was scaring me. The abrupt change from black hair to white hair throws me off, but I get why they did it cause when I tried to change it it was a hassle.
Molly: 7/10. I generally like it, but it feels like this is Kingsley instead, or even Lucien. So I gave him some colour back+ a bit of jewelry. Also more navy hair, cause I just didn’t like the colour. His original coat will be missed dearly, but I guess they just didn’t have the budget for it, and this one isn’t actually bad once the black is gone.
Jester: 6/10. If Laura doesn’t want her to be chubby then fine, but she’s actually scarily skinny in this so I changed that. I also made her corset and straps different colours cause it looked odd for them to be the same, added freckles and slightly fluffier hair, more pink tones, and generally altered the colours.
Fjord: 8/10. I don’t have any huge problems with it, but he really shouldn’t be that buff. Other than that I shifted his two skin tones closer to each other, and added red detailing since he had that in campaign and I liked it.
Beau: 9.5/10. It’s pretty good, I don’t have much to say about it. I made the blues more blue though, since it’s the cobalt soul, not the [insert joke here that relates to desaturated colours]. Also, why is her staff so skinny? You hit someone with that and it’ll just snap in two.
Caleb: 9.5/10. They captured his wet cat-ness very well. I changed his face slightly to give him droopy eyes and a hooked nose (not that you can see it well from straight ahead), then just made the colours more nondescript. I also made his hair a bit redder because I like it that way. (Also, does anyone know what’s going on with his right hand in this picture? Why is it grey?? Is it a glove? More bandages? I just made it skin toned cause that’s what it’s like in his level 2 campaign art.)
Essek: 4/10. The more I look at it the less I like it. He still looks somewhat (?) like Essek, but definitely nothing like The Shadowhand. Where are his big robes 💔 What is that ugly colour they used for the majority of his clothes 💔 Why is he buff 💔 What is wrong with his face 💔
So yeah he got a complete overhaul. Adjusted all the colours, changed his face, entirely redrew his robes, added more diamond/star motifs, and I don’t know why they’re giving him rubies but i can only assume they have their reasons so I just leaned into it.
The end (although I might add Cad whenever we get his art). Feel free to join me in just imagining these designs instead when watching the show.
