Ashildr could tell it didn’t quite mean anything to her, but she hoped that it would. “I promise it’s a fun thing. I think you’ll like it.” She reassured her. Ashildr stood and brushed the snow off her legs. She held out her hand for Laura. “I might have some old decorations we can start putting up later. I’ll need to get a tree.”
Laura nodded. She thought maybe it could be fun. She stood up and stretched a bit, most things her mom said were fun were–well half, but she knew she was trying.
Ashildr wanted things to be nice for Laura, but she also knew nice didn’t take the trauma away. She put an arm around Laura’s shoulders as they walked back. “Go put some dry clothes on. I’ll get the hot chocolate.”
When they got back Laura headed off to change clothes. No longer damp and chilled now she was wearing warm clothes. She smiled.

“I guess so,” She gave Laura her boots to put back on. “Suppose that depends on which movies. Presents? Shiny lights?” She tried a few more triggers. “We’ll give it a try,” Ashildr wanted to stay in this bubble where they could play house and Laura could just be a little girl. “You ever had Christmas before? Navidad?” She offered in case it was the small language barrier.
“Yes, the green man and his dog were collecting those I think.” She nodded. “Oh those are the same?”
She thought that made sense if they were because of how the two had been described, but she had never been able to experience them.

Ashildr helped Laura move to the edge of the lake to sit down. She worked on taking her skates off. “It’ll be Christmas soon. We should celebrate properly. Get a tree and all of that sort of stuff. Would you like that?”
“Like from the movies?” She asked after a while glancing over.

“Yes please,” she smiled, “and then cookies and hot chocolate.”
She felt a little more confident on the ice.

“You’re doing such a good job,” Ashildr praised her. “And I won’t let you fall. If you do, I’ll be falling right with you, won’t I?” She reassured her, hoping they wouldn’t fall. “When we go in we’ll have hot chocolate and cookies waiting for us.” She wanted to teach Laura to have fun, to be a kid. She deserved that.
Laura smiled looking up at her. She was finding new favorite things every day and hot chocolate and cookies had made their way high on her list. She nodded, “okay?”

“What has falling down ever hurt you?” Ashildr reminded Laura. “You’re a brave, strong girl,” She kept a firm hold of her hands. “You’ll be fine.” She glided backward helping to pull Laura along. “I promise it will get easier. You trust me, don’t you?”
Laura did agree, but the ice was cold that was what she was worried about. She wasn’t a fan of cold. She twisted her nose looking down again before raising her gaze to her mom she nodded, “of course.”

Laura struggled to stay upright. She held on to her mom; her legs were shaky but she was slowly getting the hang out it. She nodded but couldn’t stop staring down at her feet for confirmation.
“I don’t know I mean,” she nodded, “what if I fall?”
