guys, there’s a petition, if you haven’t signed it, please sign it!! i’m not certain of how helpful it’ll be (as tumblr staff are apparently unwavering despite all this backlash), but it’s close to the needed amount of signatures!! spread this like wildfire, and sign it you haven’t!! please reblog so it gets out there!

this ban hurts so many people, artists, people discovering themselves. it this has damaged so many artists, and it doesn’t address the actual issue. @staff what do you genuinely think this will acomplish? your algorithm is broke, fix it. otherwise, hope you enjoy a dramatic decrease on people here.

the biggest issues with the tumblr ban:

1. Its clearly in response to certain issues like the porn bots and child pornography that is around on the site. I’m not an expert at website managing or programming in any way, shape or form, but it sounds like this is an issue that could be clearly solved with any other method than, I don’t know, banning nsfw content entirely

2. The algorithm for determining what counts as nsfw content is very clearly broken. random poctures of people, some of whom are fully clothed, are being flagged as explicit. No arguments for the parties posting and reblogging it, the algorithm just sees the post, somehow comes to the conclusion that it’s nsfw (even though most of the time it isn’t), and flags it.

3. It’s got a clear misogynistic preference. The banning of “female presenting nipples” but not “male presenting nipples” already shows that. This site was supposed to be lauded for its lack of sexism, and its progressiveness. Yet it takes a clearly misogynistic route in its banning. It also reads as fairly icky because the CEO of Tumblr is apparatus some random dude named Jeff. I don’t about you, but I’m really not comfortable with a man telling me I’m not allowed to show my nipples on the site because I’m female.

4. Its alienating to an incredibly large portion of its client base. An incredibly stupid move, if you ask me.

5. It can actually ruin people’s lives. There are sex workers on this site that legally and legitimately use it as a source of their income. There are also nsfw artists who use the site to sell comissions, and they use it as their main source of income.

Get rid of Jeff whatshisface, put someone in charge who knows what the fuck they’re doing, and actually do your fucking jobs, instead of violating people’s freedom of speech.
