✧ ————— ⋆  ❝ you  wait  for  the  lady  to  be  out  of  her  office.    you  follow  her  footsteps  in  your  mind    (you've  been  here  before,    both  with    &&    without  intention)    halfway  to  the  waiting  room  when  you  slip  inside.    the  room  is  so  quiet,    echoing  timelines  of  ruin.    without  a  word,    you  unzip  your  spacesuit    &&    remove  something  from  within  its  depths. a  vented  cube  of  plastic,    with  a  wheel  that  turns    &&    a  small  mammal  that  peers  up  at  you  as  you  place  it  with  uncharacteristic  care  on  her  desk. ❞ 〃@etvidentium

nothing quite feels right anymore . 

there’s a saying among her kind that nothing remembers better than glass . usually in reference to the sprawling estates her species inhabits , those of incredibly lengthy lives and embarassingly short recollection times , zaura feels she understands the meaning more than ever . her office is now a wasteland . the trenches have been filled seamlessly ; there’s no crumbling drywall , no splintered wood , no electrical wires bared to the world . her remotes are all tucked neatly in her righthand drawer , her chair tucked perfectly in place . every last piece of candy is accounted for , with not a crack to be found in its dish . 

but the land holds the score . it knows something happened here . she can feel it hum and crackle around her , an unearthly aura posessing her better sense to remind her that she has been here far too many times , no matter what the physical evidence may show. >her space begs for her memory , desperate to know it too isn’t insane for feeling like it’s no longer whole . her pristine office , her pride and joy , is now as bloated and artificial as a missing hiker’s casket. 

three weeks ago , she defiantly and discretely stuck a thumbtack into the wall beside her lightswitch ; every morning , she turns on the lights , and lets her fingers brush over the slightly raised surface beside it . nothing has changed in three weeks.

the hairs on the back of her neck prickle as soon as she places her hand on the doorknob . something is off - the lights hum residually above her head before she even flips the switch , the air feels freshly turned , and zaura feels the clammy hand of fear wrap firmly around her middle . the room wouldn’t feel like this , she reminds herself sternly , if they’d reset again . the room would feel new , not refreshed . nothing is different about the room . 

a squeak of metal from her desk makes her scream , but she’s fine . 

zaura studies her new roommate with barely concealed glee the whole day . her inital fear was gotten over almost instantly , replaced with an unsettling amount of joy for an unknown , live package . the hamster has been manhandled , pet , observed intently , and very well fed throughout the remainder of her workday by both herself and her coworkers , and was now crawling around happily within a small maze of old books and office supplies . with no gift label , and no return address , zaura had left the hamster to its cage and own devices overnight , quietly hoping no one would come back to claim it. 

she checked the thumbtack in the morning , then the hamster . both seemed in good shape , and no one returned to take away the latter. nothing’d changed . 

she brought a bigger cage in the second day , and it was still there when she returned on the third . it was much easier , she realized , to make sure a hamster was the same than to scan her office every morning . 

two months into owning the hamster , she took the thumbtack from the wall . 

she did , however , add a sticky note under her nameplate , bearing the title of puffle , senior lead hamster . 

if the walls insist on remembering , she hopes they will take as much comfort in him as she does .

EVER SINCE LADY HAD MOVED IN on Earth II’s first colony, Mark had put himself in charge of making sure she was as welcomed as possible. He provided for her every need, real and imagined, inviting her to all the game nights and festivals and training exercises her schedule could handle. He thought she loved it. Except … she hadn’t been coming out to anything for almost three days now. Which could mean only one thing. Lady was sick. Shut up in her quarters bored and alone. Unacceptable! So of course Mark had put a little tray together and knocked on her door. When she opened it, he felt stupid just standing there with his dumb tray. “I made your favorite food because you weren’t feeling well,” he said sheepishly. “Um. I think it’s your favorite. I didn’t do a good job of cooking it but I tried.”

nearly four days ago , zaura had laid down to sleep and woken up well past nightfall of the following. at first she’d thought the uncomfortably thick atmosphere around the planet was what was dragging her down ; but body aches and shivers soon followed , little bouts of dizziness and an unpleasantly stuffy face slowing her efforts to a crawl 

leave it to a pack of humans to get one of the most resiliant species sick. 

it wasn’t unheard of , of course - that would’ve made this whole ordeal much scarier - just ... rare . zaura and her kind were made to last , through all sorts of icky things . the one and only thing proven to knock down her kin was stress , and anyone who knew zaura knew she was a master at keeping her cool . 

this kind of stress , she’d figured , was new . having to , for the first time , mix business and pleasure had become a full time job in itself ; having to spend days mingling and learning all the little quirks of humankind and nights full of paperwork and progress repots left her burning her candle from any place the wax dripped . and , of course , there was the very appreciated stress of learning to wrangle ... advanced feelings for someone . mark , zaura had decided , was the sweetest human in the world . she wished she knew what to do about it . 

all zaura could do , for the moment , was catch up on rest , alternating eons of sleep with boiling showers and daytime television.

she hadn’t realized how rough she looked ( or sounded ) until she’d opened up for mark on the third day . she also realized that she hadn’t eaten anything more than the saltine crackers and peanut butter she had smuggled away in her room for quite some time , hence the hungry growl from her middle . lady looked down sheepishly , shuffling her fuzzy-socked feet , and rubbed a tickle from her nose with the sleeve of her robe. “ oh . um , i mean - ... you remembered correct , yeah ! “ her voice cracked uncomfortably . an embarrassed glow was slowly seeping across her face . “ it’s , um , it’s okay - i’m not deathly ill or anything . i think . do you ... want to come inside ? “

“ well , except , i do . so ... thank you , “ she huffs , “ but i need to get going . like , now . right now . “ 

except she can’t . and she isn’t . lady stands , and wobbles , and falls right back down onto her bottom . she isn’t in agony , she thinks , just ... off kilter . the pain in her head has spread behind her eyes , her teeth , the bridge of her nose - her ears hum unpleasantly, and twitch at the internal sensation . how hard had she hit her head this time ? it wasn’t the first , nor the last , or even the most recent injury she’d sustained ( candy red blood still oozed sluggishly under the bandages around her thigh , and had dried to a rusty hue in patches on her shirt ) but it certainly seemed to be giving her the most grief. 

the words plastered in badges along the man’s clothing swam . even if she could read clearly , this was , in fact , just a human . just an ordinary human , trapped in this godforsaken loop just like her . being cruel didn’t suit her ; so she sighed , dropped her head into one hand , and holstered her blaster with the other. maybe she just ... needed a break , like he was suggesting . ten minutes . what harm could ten minutes do in a land without time ? 

lady looked up to him , gave him the barest smile , then closed her eyes . “ ... maybe not ... right now . is there any way i could get a glass of water ... ? “

that couldn’t be what he meant . could it ? lady massaged her temple with two spare fingers, expression an amalgamate of confusion and pain . not that any of it mattered now , but she had , at one point , been top of her class for earth language studies . she’d won the translation bowl biannual six times consecutively . she knew , instantly , what love meant ; what mark meant . she still gave the translation filter at her hip a few solid pats , just in case it needed some sense knocked into it . 

love . what a deceptively massive word . 

with a small shake of her head , lady’s eyes fluttered closed , both hands dropping to her lap . she was so ... tired . not even the disgustingly strong coffee at her elbow was enough to lift her headache - there was nothing that could . not anywhere in the universe ; not even at this diner on the edge of everything . lady lifted her hands , hovered them above the table , clasped them nervously ; she shifted in her seat , tried to say something , said nothing , stared in contempt at the coffee and sweet rolls between them ( mentally decided that next time , she’d ask for whipped cream on hers ). 

lady stood , with an amount of awkward scooting out of her booth , and sat beside mark in his . some part of her wanted to lean her head against his shoulder - despite the dust and the years that surrounded them , mark still smelled good somehow , like spice and starlight . she wavered ( nearly surrendered ) , then pulled her coffee across to her . she was exhausted . 

“ ... mark , “ she speaks , as gently as she can. “ you don’t even know my name , do you ? “  it’s a fairly low bar for loving someone , she thinks , knowing their name . knowing their story . knowing ... anything . “ i ... if anything , you know , it’s more likely that i love you . just - meeting all the technical descriptors , you know , i - i do . i love you . but i don’t ... i can’t believe that you love me . “

[ GREETING ]:     the sender brings their forehead to rest against the receivers in a gesture of greeting.

[ SAFE ]:     in an effort to prove to the receiver that they’re safe after a particularly traumatic incident, the sender gently rests their foreheads together in a gesture designed to be soothing and reassuring.

[ REAL ]:     after believing the receiver to be dead, the sender reunites with them, reaching out in disbelief, then touching their foreheads together to make sure that they’re real, and not a figment of their grief-stricken imagination.

[ ANCHOR ]:     in a moment where stress and anxiety are running high, the sender tries to ground the receiver by gently guiding them into a hug, resting their foreheads together to steady them.

[ COMFORT ]:     in a gesture designed to comfort the receiver after an emotional blow, the sender gently closes the distance between them, and touches their forehead against the receivers.

[ STUBBORN ]:     thoroughly exasperated by the receiver’s stubbornness, the sender exasperatedly, but fondly, pulls them in for a good old forehead touch.
