Help a starving artist
Or, at least, one who is trying quite hard not to.
As people relatively close to me know, I lost my job last July. It was a shitty situation all around, but I survived on savings and unemployment. But frankly, having been a toilet scrubber for most of my life, I never had a huge amount of savings and now unemployment has run out; did last month, in fact. I've sent out well over a thousand applications. I've rejiggered my resume, asked people for letters of recommendation, wrote too many cover letters, etc. I was hired for a job in early January and did my drug test two weeks ago, but I still haven't heard back from that employer, so I'm now staring down the barrel of ah, as if I somehow forgot what terror and poverty felt like again. Delightful. 0/10, would not recommend, though honestly, a lot of people I know already know the feeling.
What can you do?
You can subscribe to my Substack as a paid subscriber. Not only do you get my hopefully entertaining writing in your inbox -- which is free to everyone anyway -- you also get to request things if you're a paid subscriber. If it's monthly, every three months you can request a sketch or a specific comic review or even a fanfic review for yourself or someone else (within reason, like under 10K words). If it's as a founding member, you can request something every single month in the same vein. (Believe me, you're getting a bargain on those requests.)
You can commission me for art. I'm a decent artist. My rate is $25 an hour and I am not swift at it, but I am pretty damn okay and certainly cheaper than a professional artist. To give you a rough idea, that half-body pic I did of Guy was about ten hours, where the one I did of Ted was more like 15. A really good portrait sketch is probably about an hour. The more detailed, the more time.
I might be talked into writing commissions, depending on the writing. You can absolutely talk to me about hiring me if you want me to write your cover letters, because it's a hateful task, but I'm not too bad at it.
I can design letterheads like a boss. I was a printer for over sixteen years.
If you just want to throw money at me, I mean-- who turns that down? (Though I tend to prefer to do something for it, which is probably more evidence than anyone actually needs for what kind of childhood I had. HA!) But my paypal is:
paypal.me/steelandfic
Current utility bills under the cut. Like-- that's not counting groceries, pet food, the roof over my head, the filling in my tooth that I'm waiting for the bill for or anything else. That's just utilities.
And if you can't do anything else, please consider signal-boosting? Thanks.
so When do you guys think something good is going to happen
What if you piss off a magical girl and she just starts blowing shit up. Like what would you even do lol

–from the next, yet-unpublished chapter of Blackbirds: Year One.
(Yes, I know it’s been a long time. And I can make no promises. But I’m feelin’ it again for the first time in two years, so here’s this.)
“It’s coming along well; you shouldn’t need a dressing much longer,” Yant said, gently bending Maul’s arm out straight at the elbow, inspecting the deep burns that he had gotten on Felucia with careful scrutiny. “Just some healing left for the dermis and epidermis. If you want, I’ll give you some exercises you can start doing with it now.”
The zabrak doctor was a mystery that Maul didn’t really have the mental capacity to sort out. He had been drifting around the periphery of the group of them for days – Maul had seen him at a distance a few times – but he hadn’t made an introduction until now. Maul had come down to the medical wing for his once-daily check up, expecting Frayus, and instead met Zan Yant.
Maul had surprisingly little experience with other zabraks; there had been a few training at Orsis (and he hadn’t been friends with them in any capacity), but that had been his only prolonged proximity to the species he was half of. Despite considering himself zabrak, most of his interaction since adulthood had been with humans. Even then, something about the softness with which Yant carried himself seemed almost uncharacteristic. Not bad, but unexpected.
Yant also had a vague Corellian drawl that it sounded like he had tried to school himself out of, in favor of a Core accent like Maul’s.
“Lieutenant?” Yant asked, frowning a little in what looked like worry, which was when Maul realized he had probably been asked something and missed it.
“Maul is fine,” he answered, blinking himself back to something that approximated focused and alert. “Did you ask something?”
“I wanted to know if you wanted some exercises you could do with this arm while it finished healing.” Yant set said arm down on the arm-rest of the chair Maul was in, then moved to get a lighter synthskin dressing from the cart to the side. There was still concern on his face when he came back and started redressing the arm he had been checking over. "And is there anything else I can do to help you?“
Maul looked at him, taking in that expression, though the question just echoed in the somewhat empty space of his own skull. He couldn’t really fathom how anyone could help with any of this. "Exercises would be good,” he ventured, after a couple more moments.
Yant nodded back, mouth pressed into a line; once Maul’s arm was redressed and his shirt back on, and once the datapad was loaded with exercises, Yant reached out and gave a rub between his shoulder blades. An offer of comfort, if of a silent sort.
Maul didn’t really know what to do with that, either; he stood and picked up the datapad. “Thank you,” he said, whether it was necessary or not; even then, he didn’t know if it was for the doctoring or the attempt to make him feel better. Both were appreciated, and both were very far away.
“You’re very welcome,” Zan Yant said back, all but radiating quiet sympathy, and since Maul couldn’t really take any more of that, he just walked out.
Back out into a world forsaken.

Last time I asked for recs but I missed out on more recent movies so here’s a list of animated movies you might have missed out on… Part 2! :) (as per last time; This post will have multiple links (to the trailers of the movies) so tumblr might try to “shadowban” it, please reblog or save somewhere else if you want to keep it.)
Long Way North (2015)
In 1882, a young Russian aristocrat goes on an epic adventure to find out what happened to her grandfather and save her family’s reputation. This french animation have slipped under the radar for a lot of people, which is unfortunate because compared to a lot of the “simpler” stories in animations made for children as target audience, it’s this movies strong point.
Bilal: A New Breed of Hero (2015)
A thousand years ago, one boy with a dream of becoming a great warrior is abducted with his sister and taken to a land far away from home. Thrown into a world where greed and injustice rule all, Bilal finds the courage to raise his voice and make a change. This movie is made in the United Arab Emirates about Bilal ibn Rabah’s start in life.
Zarafa (2012)
A bold ten-year-old Sudanese boy befriends a young giraffe and a kind Bedouin, who takes them on a splendid journey via a hot-air balloon as far as the palace of King Charles X of France. The style in this movie is so gorgeous, much like classic western animation! French-Belgian movie.
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs (2019)
Princes who have been turned into green Dwarfs seek the kiss of the most beautiful girl in order to break the spell. At the same time, a princess is looking for her lost father. A fairy tale-parody with a twist. This korean movie caught a lot of unwarranted slack before being released due to a very gross ad. The ending credits are especially very cute.
Felidae (1994)
The story centers on domestic house cat Francis and the grisly feline murders taking place in his new neighborhood. I would recommended people to watch this movie based on style and animation alone, but there’s a lot of… adult themes including gore and sex. Very strange in a who-the-fuck-is-this-movie-marketed-for??-way but aesthetically pleasing. Made in Germany.
Over the Moon (2020)
Fei-Fei’s mother dies when she’s young and when she notices her father moving on, she takes comfort in a mythological story her mother used to tell her. Made by legendary animator Glenn Keane that worked on all your favourite Disney-movies.
Wrinkles (2011)
A man with Alzheimer struggle to adjust to life in an elderly care facility. There he makes new friends and reflect on the disease. There some really strong themes of love and friendship. Watching it, I felt it was actually really refreshing seeing an animated movie with main characters (and issues) that are not just teens! Quite a bittersweet watch. Some of the scenography is also really gorgeous. Made in Spain.
Lupin III: The First (2019)
Lupin III (known character from several anime series and movies) goes on a grand adventure to uncover the secrets of the Bresson Diary, which is tied to the legacy of his famous grandfather. Sort of a really strange story at times but wonderful animation and a playfulness that reminds me of those cartoons you used to watch as a kid!
canon and legends thrawn (designs from their respective comic adaptations )… imagine how the conversation between the two would go…
THE GALAXIES OPERA HOUSE was located in the upper levels of the Uscru District, overlooking the levels below it. It had two, large arching entrances where speeders could unload their passengers. Within the entrances, steps led to the inside corridors wrapped around the main theater performance arena that was circular with seating areas on all sides. Favored by Palpatine over the Coruscant Opera House frequented by his predecessor. Because of his patronage, and his gracious donations, the Supreme Chancellor received a private box within the upper stories of the main theater.
hi! i’m a huge star wars fan and was wondering how the ruskin raiders are problematic? i totally get it but just want to better educate myself to be an ally. thank you so much :))
Hey! Not a problem, I’ll try to be more clear!
So, here are some pictures of the Tusken Raiders:
And here are some photos of the traditional dress of the peoples in the areas he was filming in:
And a quote from GL, just in case any of us were doubting the similarities so far:
"I'm trying to make everything look very natural, a casual almost I've-seen-this-before look. You look at that painting of the Tusken Raiders and the banthas and you say, 'Oh yeah, Bedouins....'.”
And if he’d stopped there, it probably would have been better, but he didn’t.
Instead, we get:
Obi-Wan dismissively calling them “sand people”, which is something that often gets directed towards muslims but in a slightly more derogatory phrasing
"They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals." - Anakin
“They’re filth” - S2E1 of the Mandalorian
Padmé not giving a crap about the men, women, and children that were slaughtered
the constant depiction of the Tuskens, who were modeled after an actual people, as savages
Instead of giving them words or a language, GL decided to use the sounds of a camel in heat and donkeys in the OT, which really drives the point of ‘we definitely see these people as less than the rest of us, more like animals’
The Star Wars website actually calls them ‘fearsome desert savages’
On the bright side, some EU novels and the Mandalorian add more lore and better representation to the Tuskens, which was sorely needed!
But this type of representation in media, especially when it builds off of stereotypes that already exist in the real world, is problematic. Subconsciously, people will equate the real world peoples and cultures to what they’re seeing on screen because of the similarities that were intentionally placed there, and when those representations are negative, it only spreads more negativity and can have a lot of lasting repercussions for the communities affected!
