"Excuse me mother, I do hope you are joking." She said ensuring she kept her tone polite as she placed her fork down.
Empress Alorah stared down at her daughter, expressionless, her hands clasped together on her lap "I am not. You have basked in the luxuries of this Empire. Now it is time that you bleed for it.”
Princess heard shuffling behind one of the pillars behind the Empress, spotting her younger brother and uncle watching the exchange between the two. She narrowed her eyes as subtly as she could, daring the twats to interfere.
“I do not see a proper reason as to why we need to delay your squireship.”
Of course she didn't. She believes the only way for her to rule is to have knights-in-training, an army at the ready, if you will. All in order to defend the so-called honor of their family and subsequently the Empire as a whole. Honestly, this tradition should've died a long time ago considering the decades of peace they had been having following the Empress’ days as a warrior on the battlefield.
Another thing Princess had a gripe with was how the Empress expected someone of her status to become a squire let alone a knight of all things. Those were only for the lower class commoners strong enough to remove themselves from the trenches and rightly serve the royal family as a thanks for the years of peace they have bought. Surely the Empress was aware that she was an exception to the rule. An empress who was formerly a warrior was unheard of, and Princess was not about to be the one to continue that tradition. She already served the Empire in her own,hosting banquets and inviting guests of the highest honors from all over to ensure their wealth contributed to the Empire through the many partnerships she orchestrated.
She should be thanked for her services, not sent to the hell that is squireship with Gods’ know what brutish knight would be in charge of her training.
Princess sighed, already knowing once the Empress made up her mind, Not even The Gods could it.
"Honestly Martha, Mother is going too far. Training? Me? Does that sound like something someone of my status would partake in?" Princess scoffed as her head maid servant brushed her hair gently.
The empress only wishes the best for you, we may never know what evil may arise in the future"
"Her majesty will not be able to protect the empire forever."
A phrase she has heard since her childhood, due to her battles in her young adult life and giving birth to the princess and prince— she knew the Empress would soon retire her crown or drop dead, nobody except the gods knows what would come first.
The princess just sighed as the maid servant did her hair in a nice loose braided ponytail, ready to retire to bed.
Hopefully she could sway whoever will be training her to be more lenient. Ha! Who was she kidding, with her charm any man— no matter how strict or disciplined would soon bend to her will. As was the natural order of things.
Many say he was the only one of Bruce's trainees that was so ruthless. Not only was he unapproachable, but his expression only ever ranged from neutral to downright angry. She had heard the rumours from others within the large castle walls. Knights, other trainees, even the maids spoke of how frigid he was. Her mother would be insane to let him of all people be her—
"Princess, I would like you to meet the knight who will be in charge of you during your squireship" The Empress said, as cold as always. As soon as she announced his arrival, a man entered the throneroom, standing about three heads taller than her, his silhouette an intimidating figure amongst the other that entered behind him. So this was the Knight everyone won’t seem to shut their mouths over.
He stopped in the middle of the room, behind the line that divided the two of them in terms of status and power—well, definitely not physical power but rather monarchical. He offered a deep bow to the both of them, almost kissing the floor. “Hail to the Great Empress and the Princess Imperial.” He greeted, voice deep. Tch. Just how she liked it. “I am Sir Todd, head of the Secular Roundtable of Knights. I hope my service to the monarchy will be to your satisfaction.”
“Yes, I hope it shall be so.” The Empress answered, before turning her gaze towards her daughter. “This is who you will be inducting into your unit for training.”
He looked taken aback, if only for a split second. “Oh. I was not informed that it would be the Princess Imperial herself.”
The princess held out her hand, beckoning him forth towards. He stepped forward, head bowing low as he placed a short kiss on the back of her hand. “It is an honor to make your acquaintance, Princess.”
She offered a strained smile in return, pulling her hand back quickly. “I’m sure it is, Sir Todd”
The kiss was cold, unlike any other than she had experienced. It felt like he was treating her like a chore rather than the Princess of this damn empire.
Asshole.
"I will do my best for the sake of the empire."
His answer was so clean she could tell he practiced it, even his neutral expression. Those blue eyes told a much different story.
This was going to be hell and she knew it.
As the ball continued, Jason spotted Bruce in the midst of conversation with some unnameable nobles and stepped in front of them offering a nod.
"If you would so kindly pardon my interruption, I would like to speak with Sir Wayne." He cut off their conversation, his request stated as more of a command. The stern look on his face as he stared straight into Bruce’s blue eyes left no room for refusal.
One of the nobles was about to protest when Bruce interjected instead.
“Seems I have a pressing matter to attend to.” He sighed, swishing the drink in the glass he held as if contemplating, before seemingly coming to a decision. He placed the glass on the platter of a server passing by before placing a hand on Jason’s shoulder. “If you excuse me, gentlemen.”
Both men made their way to one of the balconies secluded from the attendees, the music and chattering voices getting dimmer as they finally reached it. As soon as Bruce shut the door behind them, Jason began on a tirade. “How could you not have told me that I would be in charge of the fucking Princess of all people."
Bruce raised an eyebrow. “Would you have agreed if I said told you her Imperial Highness would be the one you would be in charge of?" He asked skeptical, already knowing the answer.
“Of course not! Have you seen how that spoiled brat acts to others around her? How she treats those that she deems beneath her?" He spat, the anger evident in his voice.
Of course Bruce knew how he and most common folk felt about the Princess, they were not completely wrong. The Princess was infamous for the tantrums she was prone to during her childhood and as she grew of age her entitlement only grew more with the Empress's lack of correction.
Bruce sighed before taking a step towards Jason. “I understand your feelings about this but the Empress needs someone to mold the Princess Imperial into what the Empire needs.”
He placed a hand at his shoulder, an attempt at reassurance. “I feel that you are the only knight qualified for this task.”
Of all the qualified knights in the Empire, of all the knights that fell under House Wayne, Bruce honestly thought he would be up for this harrowing task?
Seriously?
He pinched the bridge of his nose before letting out an annoyed huff. “How on the gods’ great green Earth am I qualified to train that spoiled—” He held his tongue, stopped himself for the sake of his own sanity. Bruce was known for his tactics especially among his trainees. He blames himself for thinking this would be a simple task.
“The Empress is in need of someone who can train the Princess Imperial and deal with her attitude without fear of being slighted by the royal family if they do.” Bruce replied his eyes softening slightly.
“I narrowed it down, but overall I believe you are the best candidate for this task, lad.” He squeezed his shoulder, gentler this time.
Once the ball ended and all guests left, the Empress, the Princess Imperial and Jason remained.
They both stood in front of the Empress in her throne room, her dragon laying next to her watching the two of them intently.
“As I have stated before, Sir Jason Todd will be in charge of your training. He, above all the knights in the Empire, has the skills necessary to mold you into a warrior."
The princess stared up at her mother with a blank expression but yet her eyes held the fury of a thousand suns. This man? She thought to herself. He looked like he would sooner kill her rather than train her.
She glanced at Jason who just listened intently to the Empress without a word of complaint.
"Additionally, Sir Todd" The Empress glanced at the Princess for a moment, "Take whatever measures you deem necessary in terms of her training. Treat her as if she is a squire."
She couldn’t help the incredulous laugh that left her mouth. “Your Grace, you cannot be serious—”
“Who said you could speak over me?" The Empress stared down at the Princess, daring her to defy her again. When she remained silent, she turned to Jason again.
"As I said before I was so rudely interrupted, treat her as if she is a squire and train her like one too." The Empress placed a gentle hand on her dragon's snout.
Jason nodded, bowing down deeply before the Empress. “I understand, your Grace, I will do my utmost best.”
The Empress, seemingly pleased with the proceedings, waved her hands at them. “Right. Away with you.” She commanded. “I have matters to attend to.” The Princess couldn’t help but roll her eyes. By matters, she probably meant her beauty sleep or something of the sort.
Without warning, Jason grabbed the Princess’s wrist forcibly, pulling her from where she stood unmoving towards the door leading out of the throneroom.
“Hey, how dare you?! Unhand me, you brute!” She shouted. Princess turned her head towards where the Empress was sitting, now walking towards the chambers behind her throne. “Mother! Look at what he’s doing! Mother, tell him to stop!” She cried to no avail as her mother disappeared into her chambers, ignoring her completely.
“Mother!”
Jason led her down towards squire chambers, dark with twisted hallways in the deepest parts of the outer castle, a place a royal such as herself would never dare to step. The door that led into the innards of the castle closed behind them long ago.
Meaning she couldn’t turn back if she wanted to. The further they made it towards the end of the hall, the darker it became. She couldn’t help the way her heart started jumping as she looked at how the trees created scary shadows that lined the halls, with pale moonlight as their only source of light.
“Let go, you’re hurting me!” She screamed, attempting to pick his fingers off her wrist but his grip only turned tighter. The more she shouted, the more annoyed he seemed to get, which was her plan, but that seemed to backfire when he suddenly slammed her against the wall, wrist held forcefully and painfully above her head.
He stared down sternly, daring her to shout again. “I don’t know if you’ve realized, your Imperial highness.” He said her title mockingly. “But there are heveral squires sleeping within these chambers, and your shouting is doing nothing to appease their already sleepless nights. So I’m telling you to keep it down.” He loosened his grip a bit. “
Princess remained silent in protest, much to Jason’s annoyance.
“Got it?” He asked again.
Reluctantly, she nodded, relieved when he finally let go of her hands. He pulled a key out of his pocket, unlocking the door at which they stopped at. It was at the very end, the darkest part of the hall where the moonlight couldn’t reach. He opened the wooden door, which led to a small room, much smaller than her sleeping chambers or even her personal cloakroom. Did he expect her to sleep here comfortably?
“These will be your sleeping chambers, Princess.” He explained, before walking inside. She followed him in, taking note of the small bed in the corner and door right next to it. Jason entered that room, and Princess heard water ran from the inside for a few seconds before it stopped. There’s no way this was it?
“You don’t expect her to sleep in such a plain and unrefined space, Sir?” She asked as he stepped out. He sighed, looking less than impressed at her question. Still he nodded. “This is your bed, and as you heard, that is your cloakroom. All your necessities in one place.”
“What about my toiletries?”
“Those will be provided to you by the chamber maids.”
“No, the ones from my room. You couldn’t possibly expect me to use what the chamber maids use?”
“I do and you will, Princess.”
“What about a kitchen? This space is way to small to—”
“Squires expected to have breakfast in the mess hall after training which takes place before dawn, so I suggest you get some rest, your Highness.”
“Before dawn? Are you mad? I need my beauty sleep. How do you expect me to keep up my facilities if I awake at such crude hours?”
“Your facilities are not necessary in this line of work, Princess.” He began to walk out. “Like I said, get some rest. If you’re not awake by then you’ll be in for a real surprise.”
“Wait, you didn’t give me my room key—”
“I’ll hang onto it until I’m sure you’re not going to escape. Not that you’ll be able to get very far. Prove to me that I can trust you then we’ll negotiate about the key.”
“So what? You’re going to lock me in here?”
“That’s right. See you before morning, your Highness.” He closed the door behind him, ignoring the banging and the shouts she began making at the door. He locked it, placing the key on the chain around his neck.
The other squires were going to have a long night with the way she was shouting.
“Your grace”
She felt someone gently shake her before removing her blanket, the cool morning air leaving goosebumps on her skin.
“Your grace, it is time to wake up for your training.”
She groaned before opening her eyes, irritated at the interruption of her rest by the chamber maid.
Once she sat up rubbing the sleep off her eyes, the chamber maid placed some toiletries onto her bedside table.
She grimaced at the items— each one obviously of poor quality, this was going to be horrible for her skin.
She got up from her bed making her way to her new cloakroom—it was smaller than her own, lacking any of her usual necessities. Resigned to her fate, she washed herself with the toiletries provided—taking her time to clean herself.
Once she finished her bath, she changed into her clothes reluctantly; she looked at her reflection in the mirror with a grimace.
Tch.
This was beneath her in every way, dressing like a commoner and having to train before the sun was even out was humiliating.
Once she was finished, she made her way to the training grounds, the cool wind pricked her skin as she made her way down the fields.
She saw a tall figure a distance away and recognized that rigid stance.
“You are late.” Jason's voice echoed slightly as she walked close enough to see his neutral expression.
“I am here before dawn, so I am on time.” She placed her hand on her hips impatience riddled in her stance and expression.
“Where is my sword? Let us finish this quickly, I have duties to attend to.”
“You have not earned the right to use one, you will begin with fitness before you even see a sword.” Jason crossed his hands over his chest before jerking his neck to the hills nearby. Her attitude did not shock him one bit yet he refused to entertain it.
“Run around those hills until I say stop. That is your punishment for being late.”
She looked at the hills where Jason pointed.
“Sir Todd as I said, I am here before dawn so why am I being punished?” She asked, already losing whatever little patience she had left for this.
Jason pointed at the horizon before them, the sun slowly beginning to rise—it's yellow and pinkish hues decorating the fields.
“You arrived as the sun rose, meaning you are late.”
“What?!” She exclaimed
“You listen here, I arrived before the sun rose so there is no need for such technicalities.”
Jason sighed, already irritated before they even began properly training.
“No you listen princess, you are my charge meaning you do as I say when I say it is that clear?” Jason said his blue eyes filled with challenge.
Curse this wretched knight for his impotence but she knew the consequences would not be worth it—for now.
She reluctantly began running, mentally plotting how to snub him once this whole ordeal was over.

“Todd. Close your mouth before you start drooling.”
Jason snapped his mouth shut and glared at his younger brother. “Shut up.”
“She’s single.”
“I didn’t ask.”
“But now you know.” Damian smirked walking towards his art teacher.
Jason couldn’t even remember all the details of how he got roped into coming to Damian’s school art show. All he remembers is Bruce saying he needs a favor since he was out on an intergalactic mission and he wanted pictures. ‘Why me?’ Was Jason’s only question before getting hung up on. Now he’s here making googly eyes at Damian’s teacher.
So much for a quiet Friday.
“Ms. —“
“Damian! Hello! Oh! This must be-“
“My older brother. Not by blood, but a brother nonetheless.”
You paused before nodding, “of course. Hello, I’m Damian’s art teacher. It’s a pleasure to meet you!” You extended a hand to Jason. He whips his hand out of his jacket pockets and immediately takes it. “Jason….and likewise.”
“You must be flattered over Damian choosing you to be his muse!” You smile making Jason’s stomach flutter.
“He what-“
“I wouldn’t say muse. I’d say he’s easy to draw.” Damian looked away trying to hide his obvious bashful demeanor. You teased Damian a bit before guiding the both of them to Damian’s table. “I must say, he really put a lot of detail in your eyes.”
Jason stopped in front of the table, a framed charcoal drawing of a familiar rundown ‘54 chevy corvette with Jason holding the hood up with one hand and the other holding a tool.
“You drew this?” Jason felt a bit giddy seeing how good his arms looked in the muscle shirt and the first place ribbon placed at the top right of the frame.
“Obviously.”
You chuckled at Damian’s response, patting his right shoulder. “He put a lot of effort into it. I even told him he could apply for an art scholarship with this.”
“…..” Jason was a bit speechless considering he did think the ‘demon spawn’ would have drawn him as a stick figure than this detailed art. “It’s very good.”
“I know.” Damian shrugged though a small smile flickered on the corner of his lips. You looked back to Jason. “Do you want a picture together?” Jason snapped out of his sappy feelings and quickly searched for his phone. “Right, here you go.” He handed his phone over awkwardly posed next to Damian.
“Wow, I’ve never seen two people more tense.” You laughed while taking a few pictures.
“Todd’s not one for pictures.”
“You’re one to talk.” Jason scoffed shoving him off to the side and walking forward to get his phone back from you. As you hand the phone over to Jason, your fingers barely graze his, making him almost drop it. “Sorry.”
“You’re fine!” Your sweet voice was making his brain melt. Damian, however, was eating this up. “Ms. —-,”
“Yes, Damian?” You smiled down to him.
“My brother is single.”
“Damian!” Jason warned.
“He’s also very lonely.”
“Oh my god.” Jason wanted nothing more than to drop kick his brother.
“Do with that what you will.” Damian burns off to judge everyone else’s art.
You giggle before looking at Jason, “he’s quite the character, huh?”
“Oh, I know.” Jason stares daggers into Damian’s back as he was already across the room. “Are you interested in art as well?”
“I um…..was more of a literature kid growing up…” Jason trailed off, one hand reaching behind his neck to soothe his nerves.
“You do look like you read a lot.” You paused, “I’m so sorry I don’t know why I said that.” You flushed as you apologized.
“Was that a compliment?” Jason held back a smirk seeing you fumble your words.
“It was….something?” You look up at him. “Well, I should- go check on my other students. It was very nice meeting you, Jason.”
Jason felt his body heat up hearing you say his name. “You as well, Ms-“
“Call me —-” You waved a small bye before dashing to another table.
Jason watched almost in a daze.
“Did you ask her out?” Damian’s voice made Jason almost jump out of his skin. “What?! No! What is wrong with you?! I’m not dating your teacher!”
“….pathetic.”
“WHAT?!”
From there on out, Jason attended most of Damian’s art shows.
“Looking for Ms. —“
“What? No!”
“Confess your attraction. I can’t stand watching you yearn. It’s annoying.”
