As a teen I always used to dismiss "All I Ask Of You" as just another boring hetero love duet. Now it moves me to tears because I can't help but see how well it works as a metaphor for loving someone who is suffering through mental illness.

I mean, think about it. Raoul's whole perspective is basically: this dear person I love so much is being tortured and haunted by horrors I cannot comprehend, but maybe I don't need to comprehend. I'll just stay with her through it all. "Anywhere you go, let me go too". He does posit himself as a guide/protector for Christine, so I can see how some listeners might roll their eyes like ugh, another shallow straight guy knight-in-shining-armor fantasy but. Think of Christine's perspective in this moment. An outside force who loves her — untouched by the darkness that is consuming her life — is exactly what she needs! She wants "a world with no more night". She is terrified, questioning her sanity every waking moment and Raoul is this gentle voice of stability who takes her back to a happy, uncomplicated time in her life when she was safe, unafraid and free. He sings "let me be your freedom", a counteroffer to the Phantom's desire to possess her. It is freedom that Christine truly wants, even if she's lost hope that she can have it. Her lines in the song are so heartbreakingly tentative compared to Raoul's: "say you need me" and "promise me that all you say is true" versus the far more assertive "i'm here, nothing can harm you/my words will warm and calm you" ... Though she may not fully believe in this happy picture Raoul paints of reality, it comforts Christine to know that he exists — out there, not under the Phantom's thumb, unwaveringly affectionate, steadfast in his conviction that her suffering can and will end.

And if he can't actually save her. If Christine's fears are not, as Raoul claims, behind her ... then maybe she can at least let him distract her from them? Indulge herself in the fantasy of a love that doesn't hurt. That's all he asks of her. The music swells. Christine gives in, basks in the idea of Raoul, the light and warmth he represents. She sings: "Turn my head with talk of summertime".

Something like this would be so colossally helpful. I'm sick and tired of trying to research specific clothing from any given culture and being met with either racist stereotypical costumes worn by yt people or ai generated garbage nonsense, and trying to be hyper specific with searches yields fuck all. Like I generally just cannot trust the legitimacy of most search results at this point. It's extremely frustrating. If there are good resources for this then they're buried deep under all the other bullshit, and idk where to start looking.
