Honestly I’m not worried. And I don’t think most of the people here should be, either. I mean, we’re not even two decades old, how many secrets could we really have? Which sounds like I’m being naive, I totally hear that, but remember that half the things we think are secrets are basically just...’I hooked up with my brother’s best friend at a party last year, oh no!’ and can easily be avoided by not doing shitty things and then lying about them.

JUNE SPARKS has always been a happy kid, the first to welcome a new student into her friend group, or offer a kind shoulder to someone needing a place to cry. Her parents started to joke that she didn’t get that from her mom’s side of the family when she was very young, and the joke stuck around with her growing up.

Adopted and raised by her mother Olivia, and her mom Georgina, June has been subjected to some pretty wild family dynamics (she’s come to the conclusion that she has no normal relatives, but she’s okay with that), and she’s become a more well-rounded person for it. She’s the last person to tell anyone what normal should look like.

Despite being bright and adept socially and physically (she’s the captain of the girl’s soccer team, and she regularly wins awards during freestyle swim competitions), June often struggles with the academic aspect of school. She just doesn’t understand the necessity of sitting through yet another algebra class when she’s just going go on and become a famous soccer player, or an event planner or something.

I hope so. I mean, maybe I don’t? Maybe it’s better if my partner is just totally boring and then I don’t have to be the lame date they wish they didn’t have. Or maybe I won’t even get a date! Maybe Mrs. Hunter thought my questionnaire was spam and pretended to pair me up with someone to catch me in the act. I did pick a really boring code-word, it could easily have been spam....

Biggest fear?

“This was hard enough to answer when I had to do it for the spring fling questionnaire. I don’t really like failure, though. I mean, I hate failure. A lot. It’s the worst. But…I guess if I’m being honest, it’s not failure itself that scares me. It’s what failure means, you know? If I fail, I’m not good enough, and if I’m not good enough I have nothing, so what’s even the point. You know?” [Chuckles nervously].

What are your thoughts and feels on Georgina Sparks?

Oh gosh, that’s not–that’s a tough question, you know? Georgina is basically everything I want to be, ideally. She’s really strong, and carefree, and she does what she wants without thinking about the consequences. I’ve never met somebody who was so unapologetically themself no matter what. I’m surprised she’s not Queen of Constance with how intense she is. Plus she kind of always smells really nice. Sometimes I’m surprised she even wants me around, but she’s so nice to me when we spend time together. I’d really like to get to know her better. J-just as a friend, obviously.

It would have been impossible for Isobel not to have heard someone saying her name, if only because she was so hyper-aware of everyone around her, but she recognised it as the voice of her cousin, Olivia, so she turned her head towards her. “Liv.” She acknowledged her, not sure where she should settle her eyes because what the fuck? Was she literally holding a pocket calendar? And what the hell were those things on her feet? How were they related? In any case, Isobel couldn’t be bothered to insult her today, but they had never exactly had a normal conversation either, had they? “Hi.”

“Um,” Liv said intelligently. She was a little dumbstruck to see Isobel back in the city after....Well, after everything people had been saying about her the past few weeks. Not to mention that fact that she hadn’t been immediately sneered at or insulted by the older girl. Overall it was a shocking encounter so far. She shoved to pocket calendar into her purse like there was any way Isobel hadn’t seen it by now and tried for a smile. “Hi. Hello. Nice day. I mean have one. A nice day. Are you getting coffee?” God, she wanted to hit herself. What an idiot.
