Five Truths

Five Truths is an immersive video installation in the V&A’s Theatre and Performance Galleries. The films are inspired by five of the 20th century’s most influential theatre directors: Constantin Stanislavski; Antonin Artaud; Bertolt Brecht; Jerzy Grotowski; and Peter Brook. Five Truths examines how each of the five practitioners would direct the actress playing Ophelia in the famous mad scene in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Each film is directed by Katie Mitchell, and Ophelia is played by Michelle Terry.

The five films (10 screens) are designed to run simultaneously in the installation.

Crystal Pite: Dark Matters

An angry puppet propels the action in this Frankenstein-esque tale from choreographer and OtB audience favorite Crystal Pite. Pite’s most ambitious work to date features a heightened set, theatrical tricks and 7 freakishly talented dancers hand selected from around the world. Dark Matters has toured widely across Europe, including the prestigious Venice Biennale.

69°S.

For the very first time, a world première in the Grand Theatre will be shown live online during Noorderzon. On Friday 19 August, online viewers can watch the Phantom Limb Company performance entitled 69° S., which is now sold out. The livestream will start at 19.30 on www.gtlive.nl.  The performance will be filmed live with a 360° video camera so that you, as a spectator, can look around as if you were really present. This unique online experiment is a co-operative venture of Grand Theatre Groningen, MvOurWorld and yellowBird. It will be the first time that online viewers can follow a theatre performance with live 360° video.

During Noorderzon, the New York group Phantom Limb Company will present the world première of 69° S. This is a large-scale puppet theatre show about pole explorer Ernest Shackleton. His story and the quest for the South Pole is one of courage, determination and hardship, as well as one of tender humanity.

FuturePerfect 2011: Shuffle, a performance installation by Elevator Repair Service with Mark Hansen and Ben Rubin

Shuffle is an entirely new kind of ERS performance, one with constantly re-generated text and a dream-like logic. In this work the company looks back on its last three pieces, informed by current research in database aesthetics—the role of data in creating new ways of experiencing and making art. The result is a site-specific (fever dream) where the company attempts to read “The Great Gatsby,” “The Sound and the Fury” and “The Sun Also Rises” simultaneously.
