Might lose a friend because of homophobia for the first time
Url change
For the 2 followers I have (lol) just changed my url from "whatisthisthingcalledlife" to "livingwith50catsseemsfine"
you might see the slight development in my state lf mind hahahaha
Sometimes I can feel that I'm starting to develop a crush on someone and I'll have to try everything to prevent it since they're usually really inconvenient, friends, straight girls, guys who aren't serius with girls, etc. It's just so much harder when after it starts you don't see them for a while... I do try but I don't fall asleep very easily and thoughts about them just fill my mind and then my mind exaggerates the whole thing and blows it out of proportion I guess. Hopefully I will see them soon so I can start my decrushing plan
5 drarry pretty please? 😘
send me a pairing and a number and i’ll write you a drabble
((you and an anon sent me the same ask! they said “5 would be brilliant for drarry” i hope you both enjoy.))
“So, we can’t have movie night because you’re staying with Ron and Hermione?” Draco asked.
“It’s no big deal. The landlord said I could go back in a day or two. They’re just having some trouble with wards. They’ve got someone coming out tomorrow to start repairing them. Hermione already offered me their spare room,” Harry said.
“Okay,” Draco said, crossing his arms.
“I mean, there’s always next week. And the next, and the next. Missing one week won’t hurt us.”
“You need a place to stay for a couple days, and you chose to go stay with your newlywed best friends?” Draco asked.
“Well, yeah. She offered,” Harry said, “and I know how you like your own space.”
“Okay,” Draco said, looking away from Harry.
“Wait a minute. Are you jealous?”
“Tuesdays are our night,” Draco said, not really answering.
“Draco,” Harry said, “would you mind if I stayed with you while my flat is being re-warded? I’ll try not to disrupt your routines and to let you choose the movie.”
“I think I could handle a couple days with you,” Draco said.
Harry smiled, “Careful. I might be tempted to take that as a challenge.”
You can hear it in the silence
Sometime in 8th year…
Harry isn’t exactly sure what to think at first.
There are glances across the room. Like nothing has changed. Like everything has changed.
It feels familiar and yet… new.
It confuses him.
It’s not like the hate is suddenly gone. Harry still feels it whenever he looks at him. But it’s different now.
He can’t really describe it. He has tried several times. Ron and Hermione have asked him about it. They’ve noticed something is “off”, as they call it.
“It’s not that we’re not glad you aren’t fighting anymore. There’s been enough fighting,” Hermione had said.
“Yeah, it’s just… weird, you know. Now you’re just staring at each other,” Ron had added.
Harry sighs as he tries to remember what he told them. It was probably something vague. Because… what Ron and Hermione don’t know… Harry has been meeting him. At night. In secret. They would just sit together and talk. But, Harry supposes, not like other people would.
They each take turns talking, while the other listens. Just listens. There are no interruptions, no judgement. They just each let the other talk. It’s been weirdly therapeutic. And also soothing.
Yesterday was Harry’s turn and after talking about his godson and Quidditch and classes, he also recounted one of his nightmares. He never talks about them with anyone. He doesn’t want to hear what they mean or that maybe he should see a mind healer. He knows perfectly well what they mean. So, simply talking about it, having the opportunity to get it out in the open and out of his system… it’s freeing. Harry also never appreciated before, how much it means when somebody listens, really just listens to him. It is a whole new experience.
As Harry makes his way to the tower nobody wants to go to anymore, he wonders what he will talk about tonight. Sometimes he talks about his mother. Never about his father. Sometimes he doesn’t say anything at all and they just sit there in silence. At first, Harry thought this was a waste of time. But it was in that silence, he realized that something really is different between them. It’s as if something between them has… shifted.
So when Harry sees Draco enter the tower, his body doesn’t go rigid. It relaxes. When Draco sits down beside him and their fingers touch, Harry doesn’t pull away. He welcomes the warmth. When Draco doesn’t say anything, Harry isn’t annoyed. He understands.
It’s in that moment, as Draco lays his head on Harry’s shoulder and Harry puts an arm around his waist, that he knows. He never thought he could be this sure. But he is. He knows.
He’s in love.
And it makes him smile.
if harry was raised by sirius his first word would have been ‘motherfucker’
Harry leaned out of his high chair, spoon waving madly. Sirius was covered head to toe in orange glop that had supposedly once been carrots promised the Wee Whiz Wizard’s Whipped can, but smelled more like his mother after one of her binges in the lavatory. He wanted to cry. He wasn’t cut out for this. Remus was out at the market, for Christ’s sake, and all he wanted was a damn harpy’s motherfucking second of peace.
Harry gurgled with glee, and Sirius winced. He hadn’t meant to say that last bit aloud. “Uncle Padfoot loves you,” he promised Harry, who grinned several gapped teeth up at him between slightly crossed green eyes. Remus kept pestering Sirius to get him glasses, but it was a bit difficult, wasn’t it, on the run from Dumbledore. They were only 21 after all, well, now Sirius was… he couldn’t bear to think of his last birthday with James, and the lump rose in his throat again like it did almost every time Harry looked at him and tried to ask for what he was saying now.
“Ma-”
“Harry, please,” Sirius’ voice was raspy and harsh, the way it always got when he was choked up. He tried to bark a laugh to clear it, but it only came out worse.
“Motherfucker,” he said helplessly, completely defeated by orange carrots and tarps on the windows of their latest pop-up camp in the city just long enough for Remus to run to a muggle mart. And Harry grabbed at the air, searching for-
“Ma-”
“Mama isn’t here right now,” Sirius forced himself to say, trying to grin weakly. “Uncle Padfoot. Can you say ‘Padfoot’? Yes? PA-DA-FOOT?”
Harry giggled and flung his spoon hard at Sirius’ face, where it slid squelching down his unstyled bangs to stick in his hair.
“Motherfucking good aim you’ve got,” he said bracingly, trying to smile again. “James will be furious if you turn out to be a chas-”
But it was no good. Even saying James’ name out loud had broken Sirius’ weak defenses. “I can’t keep doing this!” he told Harry wildly, springing up from the chair where he had been perched. The spoon clattered loudly to the ground as he picked up the back of the chair and slammed it satisfyingly into the ground. “I - (slam) - CAN’T - (slam) - keep - mother-” but his slams lost heart halfway through and he leaned heavily onto the back of the orange plastic. He had knicked it from a bin where it had been broken, only easily mended by reparo and a few parts Sirius had easily conjured up. At school, Dynamica and later Occultineering had been his favorite electives. Before the war he had wanted to go into spellcasting research but -
“Motherfucker,” he said quietly, looking at the toddler covered in the same mess of orange paste he was. “All right,” he told Harry. “It settles it. No more carrots.”
“Motha-” Harry chirped.
Sirius shook his head. Harry could say a handful of words - he was a year and a half after all - he refused to be like Remus and measure Harry’s life in asinine monthly segments. But Harry could really only make sense with his gestures. Mama. Dada. Baba. and of course yay! and no!
He had been asking for Lily all month.
Remus had put up paltry decorations. “For Harry’s sake,” he had smiled wanly, but Sirius knew it was for his. To keep from going completely mad. Sirius stared unblinking at an actually frightfully sloshed looking Santa Claus with extra rosy cheeks before he swooped down with two fingers to pick up the spoon.
“Motha!” cheered Harry.
“Not quite,” Sirius said with a forced smile. He threw the spoon towards the sink of the tiny kitchen and only because he was so angry did he miss it entirely, spattering the walls with more pureed carrots.
“For fuck’s sake,” he swore.
“Fahk!” Harry screeched.
“Harry?” Sirius turned, spoon forgotten somewhere on the carpet of the den. “Oh Harry, shit, fuck, Remus is going to kill me. Go back to asking for Lily. Mama? Right? Mother?”
“Motha!” Harry crowed.
Even though it scored Sirius’ heart, he relaxed. “That’s right, Mother.”
“Fakha!”
“Errrr….maybe we can convince Moony that’s Father. Huh bud?”
“I’m home!” Remus called cheerily as he stomped his snow laden boots on the doormat. He was wearing two hats, earmuffs, and two scarves. Only his eyes were visible, and those were disguised behind thick, iris colored spectacles. It was precautionary, even in supposedly muggle-only area.
“No more carrots, please,” Sirius groaned as Remus came into sight, jaw dropping at a smeared Sirius and an equally spattered but gleeful Harry.
“No…” Remus said faintly. “They were out. What happened?”
“Harry doesn’t like carrots,” Sirius said promptly. “And we learned a new word.”
“Lily again?” Remus asked quietly, not meeting Sirius’ eye. His eyes were puffy behind the spell distortion of the glasses. Sirius didn’t need to ask if something in the muggle world had set him off. He could barely look at their godson without gagging on his grief.
“Motha!” Harry agreed.
Remus glanced over, only slightly bemused. “That’s strange,” he started. “Harry usually says-”
“FAHKA!”
Remus glanced quickly at Sirius who was desperately mouthing at Harry to say FATH-ER FATH-ER. The tot ignored him and using his immense powers of concentration usually saved for squeezing out truly rancid flatulence and sucking on orange peels, Harry pronounced: “MOTHA-FAHKA!”
There was a brief, interminable silence then: “SIRIUS!” and the bag of groceries burst apart over Sirius’ head, and the new family laughed hysterically, perhaps for the first time since Halloween.
That is the cutest fucking thing I’ve ever read
draco and harry staring at each other across the great hall at break EVERY DAY and draco confronts him one day when the hall is basically empty and ??? what happens??
Did you say ficlet? Because that’s what I heard!
Sorry it took me forever to respond, I have so many asks right now it’s not even funny! And sorry about the typos, I wrote this in 5 minutes because it was the time I had today. Hope you like it!
Hogwarts after the war was the same and completely different, at the same time. Classes were still both fascinating and incredibly boring, Quidditch was the only thing on everyone’s minds most of the time, and couples would get together and split up in the space of a week. But now some students were visibly mourning loved ones, entire sections of the castle were in shambles, friends grew apart in ways that couldn’t be mended, and sometimes things just got quiet and uncomfortable.
It was ok to search for some normalcy, Harry reckoned. That’s why house rivalry was still going strong, but now people were cautious and rarely said something cruel to each other; that’s why Ron and Hermione sometimes would stay with him, even though the three of them knew they wanted some alone time; and that’s why Harry was still Malfoy-watching, even if that got him worried looks from… everyone.
There was this voice in his head saying it was not ok, saying he needed to think rationally and understand what was going on. But he ignored the voice; it sounded a lot like Hermione and he didn’t need two of them telling him what to do, thank you very much.
So he kept staring and he kept checking his map late at night, even when the tiny dot with Draco’s name was in bed; even when Ron looked at him funny and muttered something before going back to sleep.
And as the days went by, Malfoy started to notice this development and the git decided it was ok to stare right back. It wasn’t. Harry didn’t know what to do with that, how to react. He was probably the worst detective in the world if he was so easily found out. Good thing he wasn’t going to be an Auror anymore, then.
It became something normal, because it happened every damn day. Harry knew people noticed, but for what it’s worth, he couldn’t look away, not when Malfoy was staring at him defiantly. It was a silent challenge, and that was so familiar it made his heart beat faster and his stomach do weird flutters.
It was fine until his friends had to go and ruin it.
“Harry, we need to talk about this,” Hermione said, during breakfast one day.
“About what?” He said, without looking away from Malfoy, who was eating an apple like it offended him, and was staring right back.
“This!” She said, moving her finger between him and the Slytherin table. “It’s not healthy, you know? You two should talk like normal people.”
“What would we talk about?” Harry asked, finally looking at her. When he glanced back at Malfoy, he was glaring at Hermione with a frown, like it was her fault they had broken eye contact, before looking at Harry once again.
“Seriously? Maybe you two should talk about this staring contest you got going on!”
“Yeah, mate, people don’t know if you two will get up one day to smash each other’s faces or to snog each other senseless.”
“What?!” He said, and Malfoy frowned once more, noticing his alarm. “Snog? Are you… do you even… no, that’s insane. I don’t even want to talk about it anymore.”
The thing is, once a seed is planted, it’s hard to stop it from growing. And after that, every single time Harry looked at Malfoy during breaks, he would have that horrible cold feeling on his chest, and he knew it was too late. That thing they had going on, that once was familiarity, now left him terrified.
Because even though he knew it was insane, what if his friends were right? What if he just liked Malfoy? Was it even normal to stare so much at someone you don’t find attractive?
And oh God, Malfoy was attractive! Harry always thought so, on a rational level, but now it was different. Now his glaring involved him thinking Malfoy’s hair looked soft and his lips looked inviting.
Harry couldn’t look at him without blushing anymore, and that just made Malfoy frown and stare harder, trying to understand what was happening.
It all came to an end on a sunny Saturday, something quite rare in Scotland. There was a lot of energy going on, and the eighth year students were already discussing teams for a friendly game of Quidditch. Even the few Slytherins left were going to be part of it.
Not that Harry saw any of it, because he was busy staring at Malfoy’s face and trying not to blush too much, as usual. Ron said something about the game, urging Harry to finish his breakfast soon, or they would find someone else to be seeker, but he didn’t pay attention.
It took him precisely two minutes to realise his friends had left. In fact, they were alone, and energetic shouts could be heard outside. Apparently, the entire student body was excited about this Quidditch business and even the professors weren’t in the vicinity anymore.
Malfoy noticed almost at the same time, and for a moment he looked terrified, but his mask was back in an instant and he stood up, a small smirk gracing his lips. His kissable lips.
“Potter, did your friends leave you behind?” He said, and Harry could see he was curious under that nonchalance. Malfoy was now standing next to his seat, looking amused.
“Go away,” he said, pretending his heart wasn’t hammering in his chest.
“What is wrong with you?” Malfoy responded, looking affronted.
Oh, but that was rich coming from the person who stared at him day in day out! Harry stood up, angry at Draco Malfoy and at himself for being so stupid.
“What is wrong with me??? What is wrong with you?” He said, touching Malfoy’s chest with his finger, pushing him.
“Nothing! You’re the one that looks like a tomato every time I look at you now!” Draco said, and their noses were almost touching, pure anger shining through their eyes.
“Oh yeah? And why do you look at me then?” Harry shouted, and immediately felt like banging his head against the wall. That was the only question he promised he would never ask. Once it was out, that was it. No way of going back to the staring without him knowing he was weird and had a crush on Malfoy of all people.
Even if he was ok, nowadays. Even if he was really ok to look at as well.
“What?” Malfoy asked, quietly. He had a frown, and Harry could see every shade of grey in his eyes, and every freckle on his nose, and the shocked expression that slowly changed to something new and confusing.
They kept staring, with no one to see them and no tables between them, and no excuses. They just looked and looked and looked. And after a while, Harry couldn’t help but look away from Draco’s eyes, just enough to admire his lips; they looked soft and then Malfoy bit his bottom lip. Harry’s mouth was so dry not even ten Aguamenti would be enough to fix it. And when he looked back at Malfoy’s eyes, they were wide in surprise and recognition.
Oh no, he was caught in the act. Fear started to creep up his spine, making him slightly numb. He started to turn away, to maybe throw himself onto the lake and go live with the Giant Squid, when he felt a strong hand hold his wrist.
“Don’t.”
He turned, ready to ask why, but his words died on his lips as he felt another hand grab his neck, carefully, and before he could make sense of what was happening, Draco Malfoy’s lips were on his, and all those things he couldn’t understand suddenly were obvious to him.
They were kissing, just lips moving against lips, and the hand on his wrist moved to grab his waist. He noticed his own hands were holding Malfoy’s face like he was a magnet, and they were now touching from lips to hips and it was the best thing to ever happen; he couldn’t help but open his mouth and let the kiss become deeper, more heated.
And as he felt a tongue caress his own, pulling Draco’s face even closer so they could kiss with a force that was part of everything they did to each other, he decided maybe staring contests were overrated after all.
Damn this is good
Draco Malfoy absolutely becomes Draco Potter
1.) because he just doesn’t give a FUCK about the name Malfoy anymore and would gladly leave it behind
2.) because he knows Harry has spent most of his life being the only ‘Potter’ and its an opportunity to truly become his family in NAME
3.) the jokes. Harry turns to him and gives him his best sneer, ‘Potter’.
Some Bill Weasley headcanons
sometimes Bill pops up in my head, it happens.
here some headcanon
He assisted his mother giving birth to his 6 siblings
Yes he was only 2 yo when Charlie was born but that didn’t stop him
His siblings take his words into consideration better than their parents’
“but Bill said this is lame so leave it”, said Fred and George once. “If Bill isn’t going to sleep, I am not going to sleep too!”, said Ginny once. “no, I’m actually going to sleep, Ginny.” “prove it!” he then proves it.
He’s very smart so he was a great help during his siblings’ basic education: how to do math, to write, to read. he even tought a 2 yo Ron how to make sandwiches
Bill was an example for his brothers and sister to not complain about their parents financial reality.
“shut up you little shits there are people in worse situation and you won’t see them whining about it.”
When Bill went to Egypt, they missed him so much but that didn’t stop them from exchanging brief letters. “Bill, mum is really pissed off, please send help.”
Next morning, Molly and Arthur receive a mail from Egypt and she’s all smiling again, distracted with whatever Bill’s got for her
Bill is like very chill. Someone stole his golds from work? It’s all good, I’ll bring six times more next time. Got attacked by Fenrir Greyback? That was just a scratch.
When Fleur asked him to help with her English, he said. “I won’t teach you grammar and all this bullshit. let’s have dinner and talk.” that’s how he effortlessly, smoothly went out with Fleur Delacour.
These are my favorite parents in any movie ever.

Enough said. YOU. BELONG.
This is a glorious response
i really hate it when people say you shouldn’t use the computer or watch tv before going to bed and instead you should read a book because you need winding down time or you won’t sleep. ha ha good one do you know what happens if i start a book before bed?! i end up fucking finishing it that’s what
Staring At The Stars
For @tonkscoffeekisses bc I’ve let them wait for weeks on a different fic now (which I still haven’t finished) and also they’re just an amazingly sweet human being<3
Harry was having a very hard time focussing at the sky, which was what he should be doing. Luna had taken all the eight years outside to look at a meteor shower, and for some reason Draco had popped himself down next to Harry in the grass.
Not Ron, not Hermione, not Ginny, but Draco sodding Malfoy was gazing at the stars with him.
Not that that was a complete surprise. Every single one of Harry’s friends was dating someone else. Hermione dated Ron, Dean dated Seamus, Neville dated Theo, and Ginny dated Luna. They had all decided this was going to be a romantic end-of-year moment.
And he and Draco were the only two left, so they were sharing it with each other.
And that, that was all kinds of weird.
“You know what amazes me?” Draco suddenly said. “That there are actually people out there named ‘Guy’. I mean you just know your parents don’t care about you when they do that. Oh, we got a male baby, let’s call him guy, which is literally what he is’. Very depressing start of your life.”

Aaaahhhhhh this is amazing. THIS. IS. SO. CUTE.
Beef
I’ve been picking through the books again, and Educational Decree number Twenty-Four struck me–the one about clubs, organisations, societies, teams and groups needing to be banned unless pre-approved.
In the decree itself, it’s stated that all of the above are defined as regular meetings of three or more people. The thing that gets my goat is that it would be really easy to drive Umbridge batty trying to uphold this decree.
Study groups would have to be pre-approved, which I think the majority of the school would have been pretty okay with using as a medium to fight back. Especially if it meant that partway through each semester, they broke up and reformed with new students each time.
If we figure that there are 500 students at Hogwarts at any given point in time, and everybody decided to participate in “Operation Paperwork For Days”, you’d have almost 21 million combinations possible. I imagine if students agreed to “study” 2-3 days a week every week, you could reasonably be constituted as a group under the decree’s requirements, meaning you could break up and form a new group every 3-4 weeks and there’d be nothing she could do about it except take a slew of potions for the headache she’d have.
And, if students were smart about it, they’d stagger themselves so it was a constant rollover of new groups for approval. If nothing else, it’d have kept her completely incapable of doing anything else because she’d constantly need to assess study groups or risk people learning defensive magic.
And if, or more realistically when, she overruled one category (i.e. study buddies not needing approval), the school could just move on to some other thing. Like chess groups, non-competitive quidditch teams, gardening clubs, book clubs, muggle appreciation groups, film societies, etc, etc, etc.
I imagine some of the teachers would have been more than happy to help out–
“Oh, no, High Inquisitor, it’s absolutely necessary that there are 37 different clubs dedicated to British cuisine alone. They all focus on different aspects and thus can’t be amalgamated. Heavens, can you imagine the fighting? It’s bad enough between the Association For Boiled Things and the Historical Society For Boiled Things as it is. Try telling them they’re interested in the same thing and you’ll get a thirty inch paper on how wrong you are from each. Combine? Ha-ha-ha, only if you take over as supervisor.”
All they’d need to do was exhaust enough categories for her to give up on it at all or become so restrictive that it would be easy to turn it around on her and accuse her of selectively dictating students’ activities.
I’m crying and no one can convince me that this is not cannon oh my god
This is straight up the best thing ever… this is something I would do. Be petty, be effective.
This is the most Ravenclaw thing i have read in ages.
Please @decanthrope, tell me you are a Ravenclaw. 🤓😍
For once in my life, I’m not a disappointment! You’re right on the money, @drarrymylove!
Harry disappears from the wizarding world for a little while after the fall of Voldemort and only like Ron Hermione and Ginny know where he’s gone
but he’s traveling. he considered backpacking Europe, but then he realized he’d had enough of camping for at least twenty years, so he teaches himself to drive and pulls enough strings to get himself an American drivers’ license and and then he’s off on a roadtrip in a beat-up car that’s still fast as anything. he doesn’t use magic if he can help it because it feels tainted, feels like it belongs to the war, feels like it marks him out again as someone with power and responsibility and the weight of a world on his shoulders. and for now he wants to find out what it is not to be a world-saving wizard, but just to be Harry.
and he meets a lot of strangers (he figures it’s safe enough picking up hitchhikers when they’re more than likely muggles and he’s got his wand if anything bad happens) and he learns what it’s like to be just another face, another car on the road and he learns all sorts of stuff on the radio, tries every genre out there. and it’s nice to listen to stuff that isn’t specifically designed to remind him of the wizarding world, but he finds so much of it surprisingly relatable and sometimes he just breaks down sobbing at the wheel and has to pull over.
and one of the hitchhikers he picks up is a veteran, and Harry doesn’t tell him much but he does say that he’s been a soldier, too, and it’s hard adjusting to a life that you never thought would exist because things were so hard that you could not imagine yourself after. hard to think about settling down and marrying the girl you thought you’d die loving. hard to think that not everyone around you is an enemy. were you a prisoner of war? the veteran asks. or undercover? both, says Harry. and lost, not knowing whether I was on the run or on a mission that was taking a year. I got back alive in the end but something—something’s definitely dead, you know?
how old are you, says the veteran. I’m eighteen, says Harry. the veteran raises his eyebrows. but they both know that some armies, some wars, don’t care about your age.
I think the dead thing is me, Harry says one day, when he’s going seventy in a fifty-five mile zone and the sun is setting in their eyes. when I killed the enemy, I killed myself.
and the veteran looks at him for a very long moment and Harry slows down and looks back at him and at last the man says, no. no, you lived. and you’re going to keep living, son, and one day you’ll be ready to marry that girl, if you love her, and now that you’ve got out of the war, it’s time to get the war out of you.
(they almost have a wreck when Harry pulls over to the side of the road, gets out, sits in the grass and laughs through his tears. flowers start to spring up around him and he feels the magic in his core, but this time it’s peaceful and pure and fun. unspoiled. and he knows it won’t always feel this way but for now things are leaking out of him, joyful things, because he is the boy who lived again, the boy who lived after the war.)
How is this not canon
oh god, they were roommates
This straight guy, who we’ll call Mike, has been roommates with Alex for a year. When Alex told Mike he was gay, he was absolutely fine with it. But then when Alex started to bring guys home…he started getting annoyed, resentful, disgusted.
Posting on Reddit, he said: ‘First things first, let me say that I’ve never thought of myself as being discriminatory before. I had a gay friend in high school and we made it through some tough times together, I never felt weird about him dating a guy. So all of this is coming out of nowhere.
‘”Alex” has been my roommate for one year, and I pretty much knew upfront about him being gay. At some point we became friendly enough with each other that we could even joke about it, as in, sometimes he’ll pretend to flirt with me and I’ll pretend to flirt back. I’m straight and he knows that, but I don’t feel threatened by him flirting with me and he says most straight guys do.
‘The problems started because of this: Alex brings guys home sometimes. At the start I thought I was okay with it, since it’s really not my business who he sleeps with. He’s usually discreet enough about it that I don’t see/hear anything I wouldn’t want to see/hear from anyone else, but for some reason I’ve started feeling weird if I even see him with other guys.
‘I don’t know when it started but one time that really sticks out to me is when I came home and saw him and some guy making out on the couch. I don’t know how to describe what it was like to see that, except that for a moment I felt so bad I thought I was going to throw up. Alex was embarrassed (he didn’t think I’d be back for a while), but I told him it was okay since I was embarrassed too.
‘I felt bad for being as disgusted as I was, since there’s NO good reason for me to have a reaction like that. I thought maybe they just caught me by surprise and that’s why I reacted so strongly, but it turned out it wasn’t a one-time thing. After that, every time he has a guy over (not that often, but every once in a while) I just start feeling like shit and wishing that guy would leave, and I can’t stop thinking about what these guys might have done to him even though I don’t want to imagine that. It makes me really uncomfortable and grossed out. And these are just guys he fools around with, I don’t know what I’d do if he ends up getting an actual boyfriend.
‘Alex has started to notice and it’s affecting our friendship. The other day I came home right when some guy was about to leave, and the guy tried to be polite to me but I ended up being rude to him (don’t remember what I said, but it was really obvious I was pissed). When the guy left, Alex asked me why I was being an asshole. I didn’t know what to say, but then he asked if I had a problem with him sleeping with other guys. I said no. For some reason that pissed him off more and he said I can’t complain since I used to bring my fuckbuddy over and he was forced to see me being affectionate with her sometimes. (I was in an FWB situation with a girl in the early days of me and Alex living together, but I broke it off after a few months and I haven’t done anything with anyone since.) I agreed with him and told him I was just having a bad day and I don’t care who he sleeps with, but he looked more upset and told me he’s going to a friend’s place to cool off. I said okay. When he was leaving for some reason he casually said, “and you’ll be okay if I sleep with him as long as I do at his place and not ours, right?” Or something like that. I told him it’s none of my business what he does at someone else’s place, but when he said that I felt sick to my stomach and couldn’t stop thinking about it.
‘He didn’t show up later that night even though he was supposed to hang out with me and my sister. He’s never blown me off before and it made me feel like shit, but part of it was my fault since I made him feel like I was judging him for sleeping with guys. Now he’s acting like nothing happened but I’m worried I might mess things up if it happens again. I want to keep him as a friend, but he’d be hurt if he knew that whenever I think about him with other guys it disgusts me.
‘How do I deal with this? I’ve never been homophobic but I’ve suddenly developed some kind of homophobia where just the idea of my roommate’s sex life makes me uncomfortable. And I don’t react like this to other gay people either, it’s just Alex. I don’t know if this means I’m only okay with gay people as long as I’m not living with them or what. Does anyone else have experience with this? I want to get over myself and stop whatever this is, but if I can’t I’m going to have to leave since the last thing I want to do is hurt Alex, and if I stay here and keep automatically judging him for his lifestyle that’s what’s going to happen.
‘tl;dr: Roommate is gay, I am not but I thought I was okay with him being gay until I realised I feel crappy when I see him with other guys and it’s started to affect our friendship. How to deal with this/stop being such a dick?’
One Redditor asked: ‘Are you sure that weird feeling isn’t jealousy…? i mean, this only seems to revolve around Alex specifically.’
And Mike responded: ‘I thought about that, but I don’t know what I’m meant to be jealous of. He definitely has a more active sex life than I do, but reacting like this to something like that seems really strange and irrational.’
The Redditor responded: ‘Yeah i thought maybe you don’t like seeing Alex with other people because you want his attention to yourself?’
‘The day I made the post, I met up with my sister Laura [24F] and I showed her the post. She read the whole thing and called me an oblivious walnut and said it sounds like I have a crush on Alex. The same conclusion some of you came to in the original post.
‘Anyway, she talked me through it and we confirmed I’m not as straight as I thought I was. She also pointed out something in my original post, where I said the more I tried to reassure him I didn’t mind who he slept with, the more he got upset. Also: how he brought my old FWB situation into it. I just thought he was understandably mad with me for being an asshole, but Laura thought it sounded like maybe Alex wanted me to be jealous? We moved on from that topic pretty quickly, though, since I couldn’t really handle the implications of that when I’d JUST started to understand that I like this guy.
‘The next few days were mostly me sitting on my ass trying to wrap my head around everything. I was scared of messing up our friendship and losing him, but I was even more scared that I might just let this pass without saying anything and then he gets a boyfriend and I have to see him with another guy…etc. Because if that happened I would probably have to end it anyway, since as we’ve established, I’m not great at dealing with him being with other guys.
‘Probably could have planned it better, but I told him. Right after a Tarantino marathon, if anyone’s interested, since nothing says romance like graphic violence. I told him I’ve been such a dick because I was jealous. I don’t think he got what I was getting at because he just laughed a little and said I didn’t have to be jealous since it wasn’t like I’d have any trouble finding people to sleep with me. No clue how I explained, it’s a blur. Luckily he saw how nervous I was so he knew I was serious.
‘We talked. Long story short: all that flirting was real, but Alex didn’t have any hope of it going further because of me being an oblivious “straight” guy. So he’s been trying to get over me. He laughed really hard when I told him about how I mistook my jealousy for homophobia, and he teased me by saying he’d never expected me to be the jealous type. Then again, we both ended up laughing a lot of out of nervousness and awkwardness. I’ve never seen him like that before since he’s usually pretty confident. In the end we agreed to maybe try something out, and we kissed. Never kissed anyone with a beard before, so…interesting experience, but also really good. (Plot twist: it turns out I don’t have any problem with Alex kissing guys if it’s me he’s kissing.)
‘Since then we’ve kind of been easing into the whole dating thing, I guess? I know this place is wary about roommate relationships and I get why, but it’s been great so far. We had our first proper date last weekend and it was incredible, though a bit weird since we’ve done that a thousand times already and this time there was a new context. At home we still do our normal thing, but sometimes we get distracted. Last night I almost burned dinner because I had to kiss him and we got kind of carried away, haha. We’re taking the whole sex thing slow though since I’ve never done anything with another guy before.
‘I’m a little worried about coming out to my family and my other friends, especially since this is almost as new for me as it would be for them. My parents are very openminded and my mom especially loves Alex. But I have some more conservative family members on my dad’s side, and I can already imagine them blaming Alex for turning me gay. They can also be pretty racist (Laura’s boyfriend is Latino so she knows all about that) and Alex is mixed. It’s something to think about in the longterm, I guess. Alex has said he doesn’t expect me to jump out of the closet right away, but if we end up calling ourselves a couple then I’m not going to keep him a secret or anything.
‘So…we’re trying. And I am not a homophobe, and nobody needed therapy. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time I was this happy, and I never would have expected this when I made that first post. It’s a good thing some of you picked up on the actual problem and tried to get it through to me despite me being an oblivious walnut, so…thanks, guys.’
Funniest self-realization in the world? ‘Plot twist: it turns out I don’t have any problem with Alex kissing guys if it’s me he’s kissing.’
This was…. cute???
This is the plot to Carry On
