a sovereign state of which citizenship is restricted to members of a particular racial or ethnic group.

Israel is NOT an ethnostate. Out of the 9.97 million citizens who live there, 2.2 million citizens are Arab. And those citizens have full rights under the law. You can be naturalized into Israeli citizenship without being Jewish. Israel isn't an ethnostate and anyone who says it is just wants to hate Jews.

Yeah, idk if it's just that as a Jew I'm inured to the Israel side of this double standard, but I'll be honest: it's actually the ignoring of Qatar that gets my blood boiling, not the bizarre hyper-focus on Israel. There's this weird over-correction that seems to have happened on this site and others, where in order for "the Middle East is not just sand dunes and camels and poor ignorant tribal people" to sink in, a bunch of y'all needed to turn all the way around and start stanning for Qatar and Saudi Arabia and even fucking Iran now, apparently, as though these are not brutally repressive regimes who, yes, sure, are also full-fledged countries with electricity and internet and populations who go to universities and study science and medicine and who don't spend all their time squatting in huts and doing tribal chants or whatever the fuck gross orientalist thing you believed before... but are also, again brutally repressive regimes.

Qatar is an ethnostate. It's also an authoritarian absolute monarchy, which bans trade unions, criminalizes gay sex, engages in widespread and systemic labor trafficking, and sentences people to flogging, sometimes for crimes as absurd as "being a rape victim adulterer."

Al Jazeera isn't just a mouthpiece for the Qatari government, but it isn't not a mouthpiece for the Qatari government. They do some good reporting, and I'm not denying that, but they are hardly unbiased on issues that implicate Qatari interests. I've seen people on this site poo-poo the BBC on account of the UK's pretty egregious continuing involvement in certain conflicts... and then I've seen those exact same people treat what is essentially just the Qatari BBC as though it is literal gospel. Guys, genuinely, wtf? Either these issues are huge, serious issues that you care about, or they aren't. If your position is that all ethnostates are innately evil and that all media publications that they produce are innately suspect, then holy shit, you need to stop citing Al Jazeera as your primary news source for literally everything.

Hey Jumblr, thought you’d enjoy this one! I asked my rabbi a question he never in a million years could have seen coming and I had to preface it with “I am being genuine and sincere. You’re going to hear this question and think I am messing with you, but this is sincere.”

The question? “Is my dryer dairy or pareve?”

The details: I saw on the interwebs the “hack” to turn your empty dryer on high for five or ten minutes and to then use the warm dryer to proof bread. Given that I am currently using my (obviously OFF) oven with a heating pad to proof bread, I figured as goofy and TikToky as it sounds, it’s maybe not such a bad idea.

Then I realized that this would be an excellent way to quickly soften cheese slices for grilled cheese, and immediately tried it out. (it works perfectly by the way and I will never use a different method ever again)

BUT I was immediately concerned that maybe, just maybe, the warm cheese would somehow be enough to render my dryer dairy and thus make it unacceptable to use for bread proofing (even though I know there’s no way the cheese is getting warm enough to release dairy steam).

So I asked my rabbi, who is super religious and kinda stuffy and doesn’t have the sense of humor a lot of Jews have. He was a bit stunned and befuddled, but he at least believed in my sincerity!

He says it’s fine and my dryer can be pareve so long as there’s no cheese steam. Filing this under “things I never, ever expected to be concerned about before I became religious.”

The empty dryer is run on high for five to ten minutes for bread. It is not on after that. I have not used my dryer to proof bread, only to gently warm cheese (lol), so I don’t have any actual experience with using it as a proofing drawer. My challah proofs for two hours and I just don’t see the dryer staying warm enough for such a proof, but as I said, I’ve yet to try it out.
