I'm currently working on a writing project thing which I've been calling Whumpers Inc.! It's a cyberpunk dystopia with a fuckton of lab whump and government approved torture!

I have a bajilion ocs, some of which I might introduce in a later post

It recently came up in conversation with my toddler that some birds can talk, and this has caused her great concern.

See, we were talking about how movies are pretend and how in real life, animals don’t talk. I mentioned that there are some birds who talk a little bit, but not like the animals in movies, and she just looked at me like “???”

So I informed her that some kinds of parrots can copy sounds that people make, and can learn how to say words. I thought this would give her a giggle, as fun new facts often do, but she was just deeply perplexed and a little worried about this.

“Birds can talk?” “Do they ask questions?” “What do they say?” Why do they talk?” “Do chickens talk?” “What about Blue Jays?” “Why do some birds talk?” “How do they talk?” “Birds TALK???”

We showed her a video of a parrot doing the “Hello, pretty bird, give a kiss” thing, and she was dead silent the whole time, hugging her comfort pillow with her knees to her chest. We asked if she wanted us to turn it off, and she shook her head. But we also asked if she wanted to see another one, and she shook her head even harder.

I don’t know why it has distressed her so greatly to learn that some birds can mimic human speech; but then again, I don’t know why it doesn’t distress the rest of us more to know that some birds can mimic human speech.

I keep thinking about that post that’s like “The first person to hear a parrot talk was probably Not Okay.” Because that’s exactly what happened. She had never been introduced to the concept, and her entire worldview got SHOOK.

Part of why Ravens are considered Spooky Bad Things We Associate With The Faeries is because they can and do mimic human speech - but much, much better than a parrot. With a parrot, you can tell something is off about the sound. You can tell it doesn’t belong to a human. Ravens don’t sound like that, no, cause they’re overacheivers. (And passerines). They sound EXACTLY like the voice of whoever they are mimicking.

But more importantly they love the sound of human laughter. No one knows why. But it is totally, 100% possible, and it happens to this day, to walk along the paths in the Black Forest and suddenly hear a strange kind of giggling sound, or maybe even a very clear, definitely human sounding “hello?” “Hiiiii!” Or “let’s go!”.

However, it takes a lot of practice for them to copy sounds as perfectly as they do, so you’re equally likely to hear something that definitely sounds human-like, but the words make no sense and the sound is unlike any language you know.

Ravens at the Tower of London do this all the time. Theyre pretty sociable with humans though, so they do it quite openly. I have seen videos of people, mostly Americans, look absolutely spooked out of their skins when a big ol’ raven (mind ye, these are birds that are 2 feet tall with a 5 foot wingspan) comes waltzing up on the deck and starts talking to them.

And ravens, especially the ones there that have been bred and raised by humans for centuries, don’t just imitate - they have one of the same language processing genes we do, and they understand the way a toddler might that things, places, and individuals have names, and can string together basic sentences much like an african grey.

I know because I used to work with one, Darlene, who knew, quite well, what she wanted and how to ask for it. If you were preparing her breakfast, she would hop on up and investigate. She used to be an illegal pet, and had been taught “manners”. That is to say, if she went for something and you told her, sternly, “mind your manners missy!” She would stop, look at you, perhaps for up to a minute, and then point with her beak to what she wanted. If that did not work, she would ask, in plain English, “grape?” Or “Darl have grape?” And lord help you if you gave her anything less than what she asked for. She would throw it at you, and try to bite you, sometimes while saying “No!” In the same tone as I imagine she was reprimanded in her home.

So yeah. Parrots arent the only ones.

Still can’t get over the fact that The Backrooms made liminal horror “mainstream” while also completely misrepresenting the genre, ditching the subtle, melancholic sense of unease for a bloated SCP clone with edgy shadow monsters.

I personally find this to be a much better take on a similar premise:

No jumpscares. No monsters. Just an eerie, dreamlike sense of being lost in a completely desolate, sprawling brutalist hellscape.

There’s something so unnerving about architecture that has the aesthetic of being man-made, while also realizing that nothing about these buildings would be of any practical human use.

I think what makes this video so unnerving for me is that, after a while, you stop seeing any “dry land”. Everywhere the viewer goes, the floor is submerged in at least a couple feet of water. There’s no place to sit and rest, let alone lie down and sleep, so you’re forced to keep on wading through all this cold water for who knows how long until you find someplace above the water once again. And even if you manage to find that, nothing here was designed for human comfort. Unlike an actual pool room, there are no benches or chairs, just flat, hard ceramic tiles, no doubt cold and wet as well if only from the water that’s no doubt dripping off of you. And between all that wading, the weight of your sopping wet clothes, and slowly choking on the humid, chlorine-saturated air, exploring The Poolrooms has got to be exhausting.

a caretaker who shares stories of survival like they’re a lifeline, or who’s closed off and aggressive but treats the whumpee with quiet tenderness

don’t just give me your soft caretakers, give me your grizzly caretakers, your tough guys. caretakers who know just what to do because they’ve seen it all before. because they’ve survived it all before.

The fact that the dead version is in kid's books and cartoons is the saddest part; they're endearing children to basically a different, fictionalized animal and telling them that's how it really looks. It was declared "world's ugliest animal" based on a busted up corpse :(

Whump Things: Tortures that won’t re-open wounds...or at least do a slightly better job at not?

@hurting-fictional-people got me thinking about tortures that won't re-open would (say, for instance, a stab). So of course my mind wandered and here we are. (Yall, go read their betrayal series. It's EXQUISITE and I need more).

Physical torture ideas and methods (that are a little safer)

Strapped down TIGHT. So much so that they can’t even wriggle. No wiggle room, no thrashing, no having to re-stitch.

Poking with needles. Just doing it a loooooot. No huge flinching or screams, but they slowly go insane until numb.

Similarly, the thousands-cut torture. Each individual cut doesn’t reproduce much thrashing or movement, but it’s infuriating. Induces a lovely, steadily growing panic.

Underwater? Movements are slowed underwater, so thrashing and pulling in general is lass destructive (NOT gone though, use wisely).

When tied down WELL, water boarding. Honestly such a classic. Such desperation.

Hallucinogenic drugs. Not much guidance here, just a lot of opportunities.

Making Whumpee do the torture/punishment to themselves. It’s slower and predictable, so not nearly as much flinching. Also some great psychological ins there.

Psychological Tortures

Threatening loved ones.

Water drip torture (tied down tight as heater slowly drip drip drips on their forehead. Seems fine but it’s absolutely maddening - highly effective).

Touch deprecation

Isolation (couples well with not knowing what time or day it is - slowly going insane)

Whumpee can only eat something they really don’t want to (either something they hate, are repulsed by, or something degrading like dog food).

Not allowed to sleep. Every time they nod off, they get a slap, shock, ice water thrown on them, etc etc. It does NOT take many days before sleep deprecation drives you insane.

Forcing Whumpee to watch others being hurt. Every time they look away, it gets worse for the victim. (“Pay attention. You don’t want their blood on your hands do you?”)

Bad medicine. The shot that’s supposed to help them can have some nasty side effects (eg: there’s a particular painkiller that launches me into an instant panic attack for some reason - whumpers could have a field day discovering their whumpee has that side effect). Or something that will genuinely help them, but they can’t bring themselves to gag down the liquid.

Recorded screaming. 100% swiping this idea from 'Catching Fire', but hearing loved ones scream is horrifying. They can record a few and just let it play on repeat until Whumpee hears the screams very time they see Loved One's face.

Stress and manipulation to get them to believe things they don't want to. Check in on the R.E.I.D. technique (banned from police interrogation, but used to be a major problem). It's good at pulling real as well as false confessions, but since it can illicit false confessions, it also, after prolonged exposure, can force people into thinking something they know to be false is, in fact, true.

Whumpee forced to give Whumper information for food or water. Not anything important, just little things. Their favorite band. An embarrassing story. Their favorite color. Their mother's name. Little slices of their soul traded away to the one person they hate/fear most.
