Mean Girls (2004) // Conclave (2024)
Benoit Blanc trying to keep Father Jud from confessing to yet another crime he most definitely did not commit really feels like a pet owner grabbing their beloved pet by the scruff of their neck to keep it from eating something quite arbitrary to their health.
The rebel in question:
god and mr. benoit blanc’s first mini monologue… “i want to pick it apart and pop it’s perfidious bubble of belief and get to a truth i can swallow without without choking” now THAT is how we have some fun w foreshadowing hell yeah
With three movies to compare between, I really appreciate how each Knives Out movie explores justice from a different thematic angle, not based on the murder that was committed but based on the cruelty that led to that murder.
In Knives Out, a compassionate, ethical young woman treats everyone around her with generosity, and the people around her repeatedly try to take advantage of her kindness to force her into losing the fortune that was gifted to her by a dear friend. There, justice means that she keeps the fortune and decides that actually, she doesn't have to be kind and giving to people who've proven themselves assholes.
In Glass Onion, a woman loses her sister to a gang of wealthy, successful people who've sacrificed their principles for the sake of ambition and ego. There, justice means that everyone involved will be made notorious: whatever their other accomplishments, they will forever be known for being complicit in the burning of the most famous painting in history.
In Wake Up Dead Man, the church takes advantage of a young girl's loyalty and faith to place her under a lifelong burden and fill her with guilt, shame, and hatred. Justice means helping her understand what was done to her and the women around her, and giving her compassion so she can find peace.
This is cool because it means the movies contradict each other! The compassionate justice of Wake Up Dead Man would be totally misplaced in Knives Out, and so would the toppling-monuments justice of Glass Onion. And because each movie has something different to say, they all stand on their own and feel fresh.
This is also why Benoit Blanc is the uniting figure but never the protagonist of these movies. He's an agent of legal justice in that he's the detective and it's his job to figure out whodunnit, but the protagonist -- Marta, Andi and now Jud -- is always the character who delivers thematic justice.
Truly, truly, TRULY the movies of all time. I don't think I've watched better movies than these
if i came to investigate a case and the main suspect was named “judas duplicitous” i’d throw in the towel dude
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery dir. Rian Johnson
Yeah I can't stop thinking about how by eating Eve's Apple (a sin), Wicks knowingly and willingly committed suicide (THE sin), therefore ruining his chance of going to heaven. This man is a Catholic priest! He would willingly lose his way to paradise for what? Ruining his daughter's life? He quite literally forsook Grace, the one thing God offers to his people, because of the resentment he felt about his daughter's loss of virginity. What a lost man.
Love how Martha cleans the church and the rectory, sews the testaments, files the paperwork, and even feeds Jefferson Wick.
That Vera took over handling his legal matters, and then (unknowingly) raised his son even as people spread rumors about it.
How Simone’s donated money is “his” church’s main source of funding.
Even Grace provides the bedrock myth his distorted church stood on.
But Jefferson Wick is so incredibly misogynistic he doesn’t even have a statue of the Mother Mary.
I know some people are saying that Wake Up Dead Man doesn't seem Catholic enough (largely due to the lack of Mary), but I do think that Rian Johnson was extremely intentional in having this extremely fucked up church, that controls through shame and hate, have a foundation built on a so called "Harlot Whore" rather than the Blessed Virgin Mother. I don't think he was just totally ignorant about Catholicism, I think the omission of Mary was very intentional.
The way I read "I smoked for 15 years" to mean Vera gave up smoking for Sy. Maybe it doesn't mean that, but that's how I read it. That she was given this kid with no explanation but wholeheartedly believed he was her brother from an extramarital affair, and she still was a good enough mother to him to stop smoking. Between the lie and the even worse truth, no one would have been surprised if she wasn't, if she was cold or distant, even if she obviously neglected him. But she does his dishes. He didn't know she used to smoke.

Wake Up Dead Man was really like, “this is our narrator, Judas Duplicity. You can trust him.”
