Instructions for a walk in the woods
Never turn around to check behind you. You’ll see nothing, but once you start doing it you won’t be able to stop, and an ominous feeling will follow you until you don’t lock your house’s door behind you.
If you stand very still and listen you will hear the woods calling for you. Don’t answer. Never answer.
You’ll hear things quietly following you, hidden in the trees by your sides. It’s okay, they’re just checking on you.
Don’t be scared, but be really, really wary.
If you have a bad feeling about taking a certain path, don’t. You’ll avoid whatever is waiting for you at the end of it.
You never know what may be buried under the soil you’re walking on. Remember that every time you take a step. Pray that whatever it is, it won’t wake up.
Be careful not to step on any beetle, or you’ll never get rid of them.
If you bring a knife with you, name it. Otherwise the blade will turn against you as soon as you try to use it.
Make sure you remember the way back home. As soon as you get lost, you’re just another piece of fresh meat.

“uhhhhh.”
she hesitates with an orange in hand, about to be peeled. does he think – she was. serious?
“i. i mean. i’d still rather. um. you? take the bed?”
his face screws up, confused. cooper takes a thread from their conversation to find his way back to the tangle. “ i think we’re on different footing. ”
there are times when they talk that he feels he needs to leave a trail of breadcrumbs behind just to know where they’ve been. the trials of miscommunication.
“ the identity, evelyn. how’s that going? i thought that was why you came to the kitchen to start. ”
glacierfront.
“it’s been – um. not. great?”
a weak smile as she surveys the kitchen. it’s hard to tell whether or not she’s joking, so she pushes on ahead before he can get too concerned.
“i, uh. would have preferred the couch.” a pause. “much more comfortable.”
cooper smiles and says nothing. this is one of the few problems in their lives that will resolve itself -- her apartment will be ready, furnished, by tomorrow. evelyn won’t move in until the week is out, but it’s only the rest of the week she has to stick through, too-firm beds and all.
anyway, there’s something else he wants to discuss. something more pressing.
“ ‘not great’, you said? ”

It runs through her head the moment she wakes up. You are Evelyn Winters, twenty one, from Great Falls. You are Evelyn Winters, twenty one, and you’ve never been to New York City. You are Evelyn Winters. Evelyn Winters.
She mutters it silently to herself, tip-toeing down the hall, and does it once more the moment she enters the kitchen. Agent Cooper is there – has he already made coffee? Or is that the first pot? Her name is Evelyn Winters, and she has an entire past to build by the end of the week.
“Hey,” she says, quiet, unsure.
he can smoke out the bad guys with dreams and stones and carefully laid traps. he can find a girl hopelessly entangled in criminal affairs and pluck her from that web, find her a new home in a new city, and black out her records with a felt-tip marker and a heavy hand. those things are easy, comparatively.
making an apartment feel like home, however, is not cooper’s strong suit. his own barely passes for a home so much as it does a storage for his shirts and photographs while he’s away. a thought comes to him over coffee, and he quips a note into his tape recorder: diane, remind me to purchase a bamboo for our friend. i understand that in feng shui tradition, a three-stalked bamboo with --
but before cooper can finish the sentence, his ears prick with her voice. seconds pass. the recorder returns unceremoniously to his pocket. “ hey, ” he replies, breezy and kind. “ how’s it going so far? ”
So look at the fleeting stars with fleeting eyes, and feel how the earth beneath you gives. It is all a temporary manifestation of particles, and it is all unraveling back to particulate silence. The bustle of the human day will come and will go. And then there will be night.
But how beautiful these moments within the dissolve! What a temporary perfection we can find within this passing world! Everything good ever done! Everything good that was done today, and all the good people doing it, and back and back and forward and forward, all of that beauty within a universe unraveling.
