I need to ramble about Clerk Carmine now. Little Clerk Carmine is so adorable and sweet. Yes there is some of the gruffness we see in sotr there, in the way he shuts down Maude Ivory‘s bird interpretation of Lucy Gray‘s ballad in favor of his ghost theory. But that‘s just a kid being a kid and believing steadfastly that his interpretation is the right one.
The way he just… brings people little gifts he finds. How he brings Lucy Gray the katniss and the blue feather for Maude Ivory, insisting no one tell her that he was the one that got it for her. Even as a kid, he loved deeply but nono, you weren‘t allowed to see it. I love him so much.
I headcanon that he did this for all the covey. Lenore Dove grew up with flowers and cool rocks and nicely shaped pinecones just appearing at her bedside. Would have taken her a while to figure out where they came from.
Honestly though no wonder he wanted nothing to do with Haymitch. It appears every single man that got involved with a covey girl previously caused misery. Literally. We start with Billy Taupe, his own brother, landing Lucy Gray in the games. As if that wasn‘t enough to give the kid trust issues, Lucy Gray‘s other boyfriend, the one she supposedly ran away with, shows up on the news as a new gamemaker and later becomes president of the system that almost killed his big sister. And then whoever got Lenore Dove‘s mother (who I assume is Maude Ivory) pregnant disappears without a trace, and Maude Ivory dies in childbirth. We don‘t know what happened to Barb Azure but some people theorise she‘s the covey connection to the Everdeens. So an Everdeen man showed up and took her away. Lovely. There‘s no mention of her in sotr at all, so we can assume she died too.
And the worst part is that Clerk Carmine was right about Haymitch. No, Haymitch didn‘t mean to hurt Lenore Dove. But she would not have been poisoned that day had it not been for him. Wonder if Clerk Carmine started just believing in a curse after that point. I mean there were no more covey girls left to test the theory on but seriously.
And then Tam Amber dies and he‘s all alone and at like 85+ years old has to run from his burning home clutching nothing but his fiddle. Can someone give this man a hug please?
young old person tip for you all. go get some photos printed (pauses so someone can say bogos binted) and fill out a physical album
and annotate them with who is in the photos and when and where the photos were taken!!! your extended family 50 years from now will be grateful, and so will you if you end up forgetting any details
(sprints into room late, looking harried and frantic as fuck) bogos binted. did I miss it
personally i think that, while haymitch will never get over lenore dove (and honestly how could he?), he's wrong to say that she's his only love. he puts her being his only love in the same sentence as louella being his only sweetheart, and we saw how that turned out. i think the epilogue isn't the end for him. he's obviously still alive, he's just depressed and traumatized and he thinks he's been sent back to a mostly empty district 12 to drink himself to death, alone except for katniss and peeta and their babies, and hazelle, who katniss pays to clean his house. i think effie shows up right after he closes the book he's writing (bc i like to think these are lotr style books where they're being written by the characters about their own lives and they have perspectives limited not only by their own circumstances but by time) and she's like "damn bitch you STILL live like this??" and turns on all the lights in his dark ass house and opens the windows and launches her suitcase into his bedroom.
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY

ooh i have a nice fun fact!
Static was WILDLY popular in Brazil (a country where the population is over 50% black) and we had re-runs for YEARS on open television. Everyone who was a kid in the 2000s knew and loved him. As a result, every single Brazilian Con has a LOT of static cosplayers!
So, a couple of years ago, Comic Con Experience (the biggest con in Brazil, which is actually also the biggest con in the world!) invited Static’s creator Denys Cowan as one of the guests of honor.
Now. Thousands of people attend his panel. And cosplayers went NUTS because they could show their Static cosplay to the creator himself! What none of us expected was Debts Cowan’s reaction:
He cried on stage.
He had never seen Static cosplayers - especially not so many of them! And he had no idea the show was popular here! No one ever told him his character was so beloved! Years and years of reruns and he had no idea! He obviously created the character with his experiences and his community (Black North Americans) in mind. Still, he accidentally touched a whole other community of black people who could see themselves on the screen as a superhero!
Anyway he is a lovely person and one of the best, most memorable guests we had. And I think this is a nice reminder that your art might touch people you can’t even imagine would when creating it.
Bruh Static Shock was like THE SHIT when I was a kid, and seeing him popular in places besides America makes me happy.

One fun thing about learning new languages is reconsidering the structure of words and language in your mother tongue. It seems with each new language I study, I get more little insights into English, either in how it's similar or how it's different.
For example, a couple years ago, while learning Spanish, I encountered the word for a store, "la tienda." I thought "huh, that's a lot like tener (tiene) - the word for store in Spanish literally corresponds to 'to have/keep'. How interesting!"
Then I stopped for a moment, and for the first time in my life, thought about seriously about the meaning of English word for the place where you buy things, "a store."
