And Ilya is like. But. I’m the one who adopted her? And raised her before Shane got here?? And the trainer is just like yeah well she sees you more like an equal. And Ilya is like WAIT she thinks Shane is in charge of both of us?? And the trainer is just like well do you interact in a way that would make her think that?

Ilya’s life flashes before his eyes as he thinks of all the times Shane has come over with a snack for Ilya and a treat for Anya, or all the times Shane has announced they’re all going for an after dinner walk, or pets Ilya’s hair and tells him he did a good job at practice, or the fact that he uses the same warning tone with Anya when she misbehaves as he does with Ilya when he’s causing problems on purpose

Shane comes home to Ilya with his face in his hands going oh god I’m not Anya’s dad I’m her brother and she thinks we’re both your pets. And Shane just goes. What.

There’s something beautifully spiteful about Lyrium Ghost Varric as a concept.

Consider for a moment the fear it would cause Solas to hear Rook refer to Varric as if he was still alive, and the relief that rushes in afterwards. Then later when the lyrium stops singing that song and lets him go, how the full brunt of what he has done would hit him right after he’s betrayed Rook and locked them away for what he assumes will be an eternity.

Plus, it’s so very Varric to refuse to go gently into that good night. He tried his damnedest to stop Solas at the ritual site and failed. He tried to stop Hawke from staying in the Fade and (I assume the BioWare canon is) that he failed then too. He’s a dwarf with unfinished business, a man with strong emotions who buries them so deeply because he knows that he is not a man to love or hate in half measures. He’d have plenty of reason to want to stay in the world and see things through.

Lyrium is the blood of the Titans, the origin of his own people. The lyrium dagger is thrust into his heart, the part of the body that most associate with deep emotion, and as his soul begins to slip away (to the stone or to the Maker?) it wraps around that echo of who Varric Tethras is and was. Varric who was born above ground, who feels nothing towards the Stone and shows equal disinterest in Andraste or her Maker. He’s almost as estranged from his birthright and his people as the Titans are from their emotions. The lyrium looks at Varric Tethras, it touches his blood and feels the beat of his agony in time with their own.

And it weaves a new song to last as long as it is needed, until vengeance is done or the cause lost.

every other week, my mom would make a giant pot of vegetable soup. she'd pack half of it in a tupperware and take it to her best friend's house. they both had three kids whose ages aligned. they'd lock us out of the house and go through each room, finding every piece of dirty laundry and then spend the afternoon keeping the washer and dryer running, folding and putting away each load while gossiping.

every alternate week, her best friend would come to our house with a tupperware full of chicken spaghetti. they'd stick us in front of a tv with a stack of disney vhs tapes and go through each room, finding every dirty dish, and then spend the afternoon at the kitchen sink, washing each dish by hand while gossiping.

it wasn't always soup and spaghetti and laundry and dishes. but it was almost always a meal and a chore. here is a night you don't have to cook dinner. here is a chore you can cross off your list. and here is a day you don't have to spend alone. because really food and friendship and a feeling of accomplishment are what we all need most.
