Day 4 Santa'sARMy Challenge: Eka Pada Koundinyasana II When I first began flying my arm balances, this was THE one that evaded me. It was shadowy at best - logically I didn't understand the physicality of it. ...how the balance was distributed. How can one's limbs be splayed so wide, perched on hands and wrists, is it? Id wonder, "wherein is the counterbalancing? The polarity???" Like I said, shadowy. But, from the depths it eventually came to me. (The fix was ridiculously simple, as they often are. And 1/2 of the fix was getting outta my head.) But once I flew this balance for the first time, I felt like a manta ray. Hovering low in silent, still, cool power. Electric. Humility certainly doesn't escape me in this pose - the fragility of the balance alone is daunting if you think about it too much. Again with being cerebral. (When will I learn???) So DON'T THINK. Just feel. Stay low. Stay cool. And you'll stay hovering. Day 4, Beginner Yoga 2015 Challenge: Half Moon Pose. Oh, half moon, you do so take me to dreamland. It's *always* been on my Top 5 Favorite Poses list, because it's always felt like 'home' to me - comfortable, nurturing...something that taps into my childhood. I never understood why until recently, when I took a step back to study it. It's in the hip placement. I grew up figure skating. My youth spent in the cold with blades strapped to my tootsies, gliding & dancing awkwardly across ice despite my body adjusting to accommodate new curves - new hips! - weight displacements, and even self image issues. Home on the ice. Home in this position - hips tilted to rise to the moon (and show one's moon!). And the back leg jutting out for counterbalance, like a sail on a tall ship. ...and then you sail and fly. Fly home. Even when I'm far from home, in this position I'm forever home. For the record, the very same position on blades while gliding forward is called a Spiral. It's also common to do so while spinning. Day 3, Santa'sARMy Challenge: Parsva Balasana, 3 variations. I went to a private high school growing up that offered electives only on what I thought at the time were boring topics- psychology, sociology, fine arts, a class literally called "Humanities," etc. Consequently, I went on to have a very liberal education that I still treasure and explore today...save for one complaint. I really coulda used a home economics class, if even for a semester. This girl can't sew for shyte. I bought a sewing machine in vain once, determined to learn - foolishly thinking that if I put that cart before this useless horse, I'd find a way to justify the $200. Negative. The horse died before the cart was even hitched. And so imagine my delight in learning I CAN at least thread a needle! Ahhhh...Parsva Balasana you have redeemed me!!! Not to mention how I adore a spinal twist...they are liquid back love. And when I do twists I always hear my first instructor echo in my head, "twist from the bottom of your spine, up." Indeed. I chose to show a couple variations because I adore this pose so much, and because I wanted to honor it with my appreciation.
