favorite word?
omg uhhhh hrmmmmm maybe ethereal for the vibes but i also do just like the word fuck
My dream is for Hozier to do a cover of “Nobody” by the Crane Wives, and for the Crane Wives to do a cover of “Nobody” by Mitski, and for Mitski to do a cover of “Nobody” by Hozier. I’m calling it the Nobody Exchange and I think it could be huge.
Markiplier? Isn’t that Amy Nelson’s husband? She’s the creative producer on Iron Lung. Yeah, he seems pretty chill.
I always enjoy when Mark plays A Character and Simon Iron Lung is just. So delightful to me. He has giant sad wet boba brown eyes. He's weighted down by an inescapable past that even the looming eldritch horrors taunt him with. He's literally sopping wet with blood. He's competent, but also in a situation with minimal information and the isolation and lack of oxygen are cooking his braincells into goop. He has a long flowing main of hair that would be so lovely if they just gave him a brush. His boobs are massive. His hands are so Shaped. He's concussed and irradiated and doomed by the narrative <3
In the crawlspace straight up “cranking it”. and by “it”, haha, well. let’s justr say. My Emergency Engine Restart.
*one the verge of losing it* i need to rewatch the muppets 2011
Iron Lung is great bc it asks the question what if the sacrificial lamb was evil. What if the lamb thought itself evil. What if everyone else thought the lamb evil. What if the lamb wasn't evil what if the lamb is just a lamb, bleeting desperately to escape its undue sacrifice. What if the lamb knew it was a sacrifice from the start. What if the lamb just wanted to live. What if the lamb wanted to live so fucking bad. What if the lamb wanted the flock to live more. What if the lamb accepts its own sacrifice, leans into the glinting knife, in the hopes that the flock survives.
my roommates and i are going to see iron lung tonight, using the money one of them got from donating blood, and i think that’s amusing
I SEE YOU
man, when i was watching that scene in iron lung where simon's digging through the supplies that were packed in there with him and he came across the lifejacket, it was almost funny. like, this guy is buried in a tin can beneath the pressure of thousands of feet of blood, being stalked by a massive alien fish, and is suffering from radiation poisoning, C02 poisoning, a concussion, probably the bends, dehydration, and the literal wrath of god. both simon and the audience look at it like it's some sort of dark joke, that stupid undersized life jacket is not gonna save him.
and then in that final scene it makes another very important appearance. he inflates it, puts the blackbox in, and sacrifices himself to let it float to the surface. and i can't stop thinking about that scene where the blackbox is floating up there. it's practically wearing the life jacket. it just fits so snugly and perfectly. that life jacket was never meant to save a human.
Little postcard drawing inspired by Iron Lung. I couldn't get the idea out of my head that the Light is just the monster's angler fish dangler thing. Sketches under the cut
Simon, after he photographs the fish in the tunnel, says: just pretend like I'm not even here. If you see someone out there, looking for Simon... tell them I'm still alive.
Then later, when talking to the Speaker, he says: I never told you my name.
And she says: yes, you did.
More Iron Lung details I noticed
im also obsessed with the interpretation of the blood ocean not being inherently evil or malevolent, in fact, it starts off rather loving. or at least, what it perceives to be loving. it wants simon to become part of it. it could've absorbed the iron lung and mutated it so long ago - we saw how quickly things went to shit in the final act. but its slow, always there in the corner for simon to be constantly aware of it, like a friend letting you know theyre always in your corner. it keeps the oxygen supply going despite the fact it should've run out days ago. it throws him into the cave. it talks to him, tries to entice him to join in anyway it can. come see the truth, it could save you, it has the answers you've been looking for. if that doesn't work, maybe guilt tripping is the answer, reflect on filament station, simon. "i see you". an acknowledgement. simon runs out of tape so the blood mutates to hold the photograph button for him. but the more defiant simon becomes, the more focused on his own survival he is, the angrier the ocean becomes. the creature couldve swallowed him so many times. clearly the radiation isn't actually a threat to it, we see it being blasted so many times in the end, but it continues its chase after him once it kills ava. the creature backing off in the caves after the photograph was a conscious decision. it couldve lashed out right then and there, but it backed off. "hey, im not a threat, im just watching, im right here for when you're ready".
just like eden, just like the COI, the ocean tries to force simon into a life he never really wanted. because he never seems to get a choice.
i just can't stop thinking about an ocean that thinks itself benevolent, when really, its just as cruel as the rest of humanity. or maybe, its humanity that is as cruel as nature. or is it a God? does it even matter?
Iron Lung does foreshadowing so so so so well
I havent seen anyone talk about it, but in the manual he flips past, in order, the pages for "emergency engine restart", "fire procedure", and "flooding procedure"
Imagine being a fucked up space creature living in your natural habitat of the Blood Ocean. And some poorly welded tin-can rolls up and starts flashbanging you right in the face with x-rays. And then it fucks off and you think it's gone. But then the tin-can comes back with a spike on the front of it and rams the spike directly into your face at full speed. I think I would be pretty upset too
⚠️SPOILERS FOR IRON LUNG⚠️
I am normal about the parallels of Laika and Simon. I can recognize the connection without getting emotional. I can handle thinking about the blood ocean horror movie.
^^^^^^ My daily mantras
It's real rough, but I just had to get this out of my system
