āOh boy,ā Joe said when he opened the front door with a periwinkle muslin burping blanket slung over his shoulder and found a smiling Paul on the other side. āWhat are you doing here, brother?ā
āIām here to play interference to the Strand Marwani Cabal,ā he said with a knowing smirk.
His presence was announced through squeal, that of one Jonah Strand Reyes the second he noticed his favorite uncle was standing in the doorway.Ā
āWhatās up little man?ā Paul offered Jonah a high five in the entryway, scooping him up and slinging him over his shoulder like the worldās squirmiest, giggliest backpack on his way into the house while Jonah dissolved into helpless giggles against his back.
āPaul?ā Marjan asked, surprised eyes looking up at him from the floor where she was wrestling a wriggling baby Yara into a tiny yellow onesie with the Austin City Limits logo on it. A gift from Uncle Paul. TK was holding Yaraās hands, placing little kisses to the tiny tips of her fingers, while Marjan clasped the buttons at the bottom.
āYeah,ā he said, depositing Jonah on the nearest accent chair. Jonah immediately sprang back up, attempting to climb Paul like a jungle gym. āDid you think Carlos wouldnāt call in backup?ā
āBackup?ā TK swallowed.
Paul already had his phone out, reading: āPlease keep my husband and Marjan from doing anythingāā he glanced down at Jonah, staring back at him with big eyes. āS-T-U-P-I-D.ā

Just wanted to say apologies for basically disappearing off the earth lol. My writing motivation crashed and burned when I had no time to do it and then I just drifted away from tumblr. But I'm trying to come back now! I have a lot of unfinished stuff that I'd like to complete :]

He had a feeling after lunch that she wouldnāt be able to let Sofia go. Itās a tough one for her to shake, he knows, a woman of color going missing from the middle of downtown Austin.
TKās barely been able to stop thinking about her either. He got a brief reprieve on the drive home from Marjanās, too distracted by Jonah playing backseat driver and DJ to think about literally anything else.
Then there were bulldozers and dump trucks in the backyard sandbox, chasing Jonah around while he āhelpedā water the plants with the garden hose, trying to keep him from completely drowning the orange trees and Carlosās herb garden. Barely stopping him from drinking whatever it was thatās pooling in a mystery puddle in the corner of the yard.
All before Carlos got home and they worked as a little team of three to make dinner ā stuffed peppers with asparagus and Carlosās signature thick Texas toast.
And now Carlos sits on the couch, absently scrolling through something on his iPad while Jonah snoozes in his lap, his little face buried against Papaās warm chest. Theyād brought him downstairs for storytime and cuddles after his bath, and Carlos is always reluctant to bring a sleeping Jonah back to bed when he can hold him a bit longer, kiss his little head and run a hand through his still-damp hair. Itās left a dark patch on Carlosās gray T-shirt but he doesnāt seem to mind.
