timeloop protagonist that knows how to escape, but keeps restarting on purpose because they crave the familiar and are terrified of what waits for them if they decide to move on
we need to play around more with soulsbornes-as-timeloops i think. bloodborne especially good for this. the dark souls weird time shit can almost definitely accommodate. and the ER “what if i could do it all different?” for a couple of endings. and not a soulsborne but this is lowkey how AC6 is set up if you want it to be. Heh
I’ve said in my tags/replies that I’ve seen + are writing DS1 fics that do this, but honestly out of all the games I’d looooooove to see someone tackle DS2’s NG+ cycles as part of a timeloop!
It’s the only game in the series that adds insane alterations to the level progression with each cycle (not to mention giving you the ability to do this at will via the bonfire aesthetics). Really gives off the implication that the world itself is aware of your impacts in the timeloop and is actively trying to stop you from interfering with it by breaking its own rules.
real. also i personally think it would be funny on the standpoint of the cursebearer participating in the pate/creighton fight different ways, multiple runs, and then seeing it end the same way every single time
Scifi rec: Through the Flash by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, it looks like it's part of an anthology of stories by that author titled Friday Black which can be borrowed from several online libraries.
(I originally read a PDF version of this story I can no longer locate and didn't realize it was part of an anthology, so I'll be picking that up myself!)

I learned about this short story from a youtube video and had to read it myself, it's a time-loop story with horror elements. Through The Flash is about a Black teenage girl named Ama whose entire town is - and has been, for a very long time - trapped in a time loop of which they have all gradually become aware. Over the various loops they have discovered that they 'accumulate' aptitude in particular abilities, such as Ama's physical strength and athletic prowess becoming superhuman, while her baby brother has become a genius. It's also important to note that Ama's mother died right before the loop happened, causing Ama and her father and brother to be trapped for eternity with the knowledge that if her mother had waited a little longer she'd be there with them instead of lost to them forever.
In previous loops, Ama went on various killing sprees until she became insanely good at it, dubbing herself Knife Queen. (It's left kind of vague but imo implied that Ama was not necessarily the first person to break the seal on killing, and may even have not started until after having been a victim herself.)
By the start of the story proper, Ama has decided to change her ways and become the best and most positive version of herself, and to be kind to her neighbors and family, and in that process the story kind of examines/deconstructs the "character caught in a time loop spends a few iterations being as bad as they can be just for kicks because there's no consequences, but then they decide to change and don't do that anymore and they have character development" trope from the perspective of... isn't that person still you?
Maybe the damage was erased, but what if YOU still remember you did that and so do the people you did it to?
IDK I really loved the story, the prose is beautifully written and Ama is an extremely interesting/complex/charming protagonist and the story ends on a hopeful note, but I do have to warn for some pretty extreme descriptions of violence, torture, and gore, and a brief depiction of animal harm/death.

secretly drugged the time reversal powers girl's drink to mess with her sense of the passage of time so she keeps making decisions that she can't reverse because too many seconds have passed and i just pretend she never said those things and she keeps not noticing and i just think she looks really cute when she works up the energy to do something she knows she'll take back.
The four most interesting parts of time loop are when the person kills themselves for the first time, when they kill someone else for the first time (in a fuck around kind of way, this doesn't count if they already were killing people outside of the loop), how they break the loop, and the weeks afterward where they loose their fucking minds in an entirely different, significantly more damaging to the world around them way. And yet I rarely see anything done with that last one. People leave time loops and are all happy go lucky 'oh boy'. Where's the grappling with people you know who will never know you? Where's the knowledge that the safety of the loop is gone, and you can't fix any mistakes you make? That's the good angst I want

the real horror is a months or years long time loop. no speedrunning your torture here. you have to sit with the consequences of your actions for a loooong time before the release of knowing the consequences and actions have been erased.
but oh, all the actions and consequences are gone. those relationships you built? empty. you can never build them again without the constant guilt of knowing that it's not as real the second, third, thirtieth time when you already know all their secrets and they none of yours.
but you can't hide. you can't isolate yourself because what if this is the time the loop breaks and then what? years gone by of missed chances with people who have changed you a thousand times and now circumstances have changed. you can never build back what was washed away by your own inaction. they'll never be able to meet you like they did the first time if you don't choose to meet them the first time every time
È una storia breve dal libro Friday Black (epub in italiano) di Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah ed è probabilmente la mia storia preferita che parla di cicli temporali!! Sono 21 paginette, si legge tutta d'un fiato ma mi è rimasta in testa per anni... Genere... fantascienza? Realistico? Orrore? Distopia? Qualcosa del genere. Questo post contiene Spoiler!! Andate a leggere l'originale vi prego vi prego!!!! Cmq ecco i miei pensieri! Perché ho bisogno di metterli da qualche parte.
Dati tecnici: Il ciclo dura 1 giorno, ma meno di 24 ore. Non c'è spiegazione. Non c'è fine. I ricordi di tutte le persone all'interno rimangono, e alcune caratteristiche fisiche/mentali si accumulano.
Ma il motivo per cui mi piace così tanto è... tutto il resto. La protagonista, Ama, 14 anni pre-Lampo, si sveglia ogni mattina e si dice allo specchio «Tu sei suprema e infinita».

Già prima del lampo il Riquadro SV-2 era una zona di guerra. Dei droni-uccello suonano un allarme a metà ciclo, tanto assordante che la gente comunemente si uccide prima piuttosto che ascoltarlo per i due minuti. La situazione è disastrosa. Il Lampo sarebbe una bomba atomica che si abbatte sulla comunità al posto del tramonto la sera, e la pioggia calda è radioattiva. Ma Ama ci racconta e ci spiega tutto come se fosse normale, perchè è la sua normalità. "Cielo azzurro, Sirena, pioggia calda, Lampo. [...] Sono queste le cose che succedono a prescindere da tutto ciò che si possa dire o pensare, da qualunque preghiera, azione o morte."

La sua storia ce la racconta al contrario, sfogliando uno strato alla volta come una cipolla: adesso c'è la Nuova Ama, che fa in modo di comportarsi in modo gentile, per ricordare che, qualunque cosa succeda, "Siamo tutti esseri supremi e infiniti." Da il buongiorno, fa il tè, da a chiunque una seconda possibilità. Sa benissimo che la pioggia è cancerogena, che il Lampo annichilisce, ma si chiede comunque, "non sarebbe un peccato se tuo padre ti avesse uccisa proprio il giorno in cui il Loop si era interrotto e avresti potuto avere un domani?" e immagina gente "dall’altro lato del tempo".

E nel frattempo, sia contrastando i suoi stessi ricordi, sia attraverso le reazioni della gente intorno, incontriamo la Vecchia Ama, che si è trovata, quattordicenne, con il corpo più agile e svelto e forte, e con un coltello sotto al cuscino ogni mattina, in un mondo senza conseguenze permanenti. Che altro poteva pensare? È diventata la Regina dei Coltelli. "L’Ama che ha cominciato con un solo coltello ed è finita con tre lame e due pistole, che riusciva a uccidere tutti e centosedici gli abitanti del suo agglomerato in un’ora e ventidue minuti."
Le descrizioni di queste parti sono anche molto cruente. La Regina dei Coltelli ha iniziato con Carl, che la bullizzava, ha continuato con la gente che considerava malvagia, e poi ha concluso uccidendo chiunque potesse farle del male, per restare completamente sola, solo con suo fratello. Per avere la certezza di essere suprema e infinita. (Vengono dalla madre di Carl, queste parole?) Si distende nell'erba coperta di sangue. "A volte piangeva senza sosta mentre si lavava via il sangue dai capelli e dagli occhi." E per chi piangeva? ...
🩶 Ho visto mia madre in sogno
La sua prima arma è il coltello che ha usato sua madre due mesi prima, per uccidersi. "Se avesse aspettato altri due mesi, sarebbe rimasta con noi per l’eternità. Non ci sono abbastanza parole, per l’eternità." E ancora, "[E]d è stupido essere triste perché tipo ti farà sempre male l’anca, o perché sei così vecchia che l’influenza ti terrà a letto per tutta la vita, o perché tua madre se n’è andata per sempre."
Non ci sono più bambini veri: Ikenna, fratellino di Ama di 6-anni pre-Lampo, è stato il primo ad accorgersi del ciclo ed è ora la persona più esperta della comunità.
Ma comunque Ama aveva solo 14 anni. Sotto tutte le storie che racconta, sotto i due personaggi della Regina dei Coltelli e della Nuova Ama, si sente chiarissima la voce di una bambina di 14 anni. Parlando del dolore altrui, riconosce che "È sorprendente quanto per loro non sia mai diventato più facile", che "Esistono dolori che sopravvivono anche dopo cento morti". Dovrebbero essere passati secoli. La gente dovrebbe essersi abituata. Ma il ciclo non permette neanche questo. Il dolore è sempre fresco come se fosse successo ieri, perché è proprio successo ieri.
E Ama resta sempre la bambina che vuole riavere il "padre che avevo quando avevo una madre". Una bambina costretta a crescere troppo velocemente, come Ikenna, perché, oltre tutte le spiegazioni fantascientifiche, ha 14 anni in una zona di guerra.
💚 Fiori di sambuco e miele
Ogni cosa che succede nella storia corrisponde a qualcosa di reale, solo che è un po' diversa. Neanche esagerata, solamente diversa. Quel tanto che basta per essere un po' meno familiare. Ma le emozioni sono reali. È questa la parte che mi colpisce di più. Sia nella storia che nel libro in generale.
Prima dei tempi della Regina dei Coltelli, per ogni persona che iniziava a ricordare oltre il Lampo, la comunità faceva una festa. Dopo la Nuova Ama, la gente visita di più la signora Nagel, e Ama le prepara il suo tè preferito. Guardare il Lampo insieme era pure diventata una tradizione, e fare disegni sul muro con l'ombra del proprio corpo, quando si disintegra per la bomba. "Neanche l’apocalisse è la fine. Questo lo si può capire solo quando ci si trova di fronte a una luce così forte che ti cancella dal mondo. E se quando arriva sei sola, in posa da ballerina, ti senti stupida e spaventata. E se quando arriva hai accanto la tua famiglia, o una qualunque persona, ti senti stupida e spaventata, ma quantomeno non sola."
