“as long as you hold my hand.”
...
Y/N and Tsukishima Kei had known each other since primary school. Their families were great friends and often had gatherings together where they forced the children to attend. Being the same age, Y/N and Tsukishima always ended up attached to each other. As much as it hurt Tsukishima’s pride to admit it, he adored the girl.
Not like it hurt his pride in anyways because he never really admitted it to anyone except his brother, Akiteru.
Y/N had crushed hard for one boy and one boy only since she ever remembered. She was whipped, as Yamaguchi would say.
‘Kei, I like you.’
‘Yeah cool story.’
The same exchange happened everyday that the two walked to school together and every evening when Tsukishima walked Y/N home.
Y/N would laugh at Tsukishima’s blush that always appeared even though the routine had been repeated since they were in primary school. She loved how he would give her a head pat to hide his small smile after he sent her home every evening.
Yamaguchi knew his best friends were pretty much in love, whipped, deadass wrapped around each others fingers. What he didn’t understand was why they weren’t dating yet. Y/N’s countless ‘I like you’s seemed like they had no meaning to Tsukki and Yamaguchi couldn’t understand why Tsukki did not just admit his feelings either.
It was national season before they knew it and Y/N was in Tokyo with Akiteru, watching their beloved Tsukishima Kei play. As their last set with Inarizaki progressed, Y/N couldn’t help but scream and cheer on him.
‘Go go Kei! You can do it Kei! I like you Kei!’ She accidentally said out of habit, causing a stir from the court below them as Tsukishima’s mouth went into a thin line, a clear blush on his cheeks as he yelled back.
‘Idiot!’
He had managed to get a service ace right after that. It was like something had overtaken him and fired up his blood and bones. It was the three words that he heard everyday for the past 10 years that he should have been used to that caused it. He knew that it didn’t really mean that she liked him the way he liked her, but he couldn’t help but fantasize.
Y/N was sure that she had gotten the message across pretty clear every time she told him she liked him but she did not realize he interpreted in a different way.
‘My brother is really stupid, no?’ Akiteru laughs awkwardly, scratching his neck when Y/N had asked him once a few months back why Tsukishima never responded to her confessions. She was frustrated, why did it not feel one sided but the outcome was always one sided?
Y/N was, extremely, in love with the blonde boy. And he felt the same, if not even stronger, about Y/N. Why was it that they both didn't know how each other really felt?
It was a month after nationals when the annual sports awards ball was announced. And it wasn’t till Kageyama decided to ask Y/N to go as his date when Tsukishima‘s feelings decided to burst out of his chest.
‘She’s going with me.’ He says in front of everyone in the gym after practice that evening. Kageyama taken by surprise, cocks his head to the side with a scoff.
‘She doesn’t seem to know she’s supposed to be going with you though?’
Kageyama’s one sentence caused a blush to arise on Tsukishima’s face as Y/N stood behind him all flustered. Tsukishima turns on his heel and grabs her wrists, dragging her out towards the club room. Daichi yells after Tsukishima but gives up as Suga pats his back and smiles softly at him.
‘Kei, wait! What’s wrong?’
‘Kei! Are you listening to me?’
‘Kei! Stop!’
Tsukishima came to abrupt stop as he heard the girl he loved pant, realizing he was walking too fast. The cold autumn air felt comforting under the moonlight as Y/N looked at him in the eyes, trying to catch her breath.
‘Why?’ He utters out, not quite sure what he even meant himself.
‘What do you mean why? You were the one who dragged me out here Kei!’ Y/N exclaimed, brows raised looking at Tsukishima’s hand that still held her wrist. His eyes followed hers and saw that he was still holding onto her. Mustering up his courage, instead of letting go, he pulled her into his chest.
‘Why are you going with Kageyama...’ He mumbles under his breath, hoping she’d not hear the embarrassment in his voice.
‘I never said I was.’ Y/N replies, face buried in his chest, struggling to look up at the blonde boy. He pulled her even closer, preventing her from seeing his pink face.
‘Y- you aren’t? Kageyama, that bastard acted you did...’
‘Really..? I thought I made it clear to him.’
Tsukishima watched as the girl in his arm wriggled her face out of his chest to stare at him, eyes determined and glowing. He never felt so flustered in his life, he was pretty sure she could feel how fast his heart was beating.
‘M- made what clear?’ He stuttered, avoiding her gaze.
‘That I like you, Kei.’ Y/N said, this time without her usual laughing smile. Her eyes stared straight into his.
‘Y- yeah c—‘
‘No. Not cool. I like you, Kei! I like you!’
‘Ye- yeah!’
‘I like you!’
‘O- okay!’
‘Yeah, I like you so much you make me so mad I want to kiss you and hold you forever Kei!’
Tsukishima’s eyes widened. He felt the world snap in half and his heart beating like he was falling of the earth’s crust into the core. He didn’t know how long he was quiet with his eyes wide and mouth hanging open when Y/N’s voice snapped him back into reality.
‘Kei...?’ Her soft voice and teary eyes making his heart quake again.
‘Y- yeah?’
‘It’s okay if you don’t like me back, you know that right?’
‘Y- yeah. No!’
‘What?’
‘No... I think you know. I think you’re pretty cool. And pretty. And I, yeah.’
Y/N watched as the boy she loved tried to collect his thoughts and express in words when she bursted out in laughter.
‘Don’t laugh at me idiot!’ He yelled blushing, hugging her tighter.
‘Sorry, you’re just so cute.’ Y/N smiled softly at him.
‘So... will you go with me?’ He mumbles, making her smile more.
‘As long as you hold my hand and me like this until we die.’
‘Huh?!’
Tsukishima exclaims loudly surprised by Y/N’s sudden declaration.
‘What part of I like you and I want to kiss you and hold you forever do you not understand? I’ve been saying this for the past few years Kei! I thought you understood!’
‘I understood shit Y/N!’ Tsukishima had his arms up, covering half of his face as he looked away all flustered.
‘B- But I understand now. A- and I think I like you too.’
‘You think?’
‘Y- yeah, I think that I definitely have liked you since primary school and I’ll definitely hold your hand if you go to the ball with me. A-and you’ll have to deal with me forever. You can’t take it back now idiot.’
Y/N was grinning widely as Tsukishima’s eyes leapt from her to the wall, too shy to look her in the eyes. He felt like he could hear confetti and champagne being popped in his ears as he had waited for so many years to be able to touch Y/N like this. He didn’t know all it would take was Kageyama’s crush on Y/N for him to finally admit his feelings.
Maybe it wasn’t so bad that he pushed his pride aside that day as many bright coloured days filled his grey life. Her smile was pink, her laugh was yellow, her tears were blue, and the warmth he felt from her hands were orange. Tsukishima Kei was so glad that his parents forced him to attend Y/N tea party when they were 4. He was so glad as he watched her walk down the aisle towards him that he had tears in his eyes. His love for her was a never ending rainbow and he loved it.
