Secondary Characters Need Love Too

I just have a bad habbit of falling in love with minor characters.  I like and follow on badasspacifist

Part of the weirdness of Breaking Dawn is that at least on some level, Bella's success at being a vampire is because she chose it beforehand. I think Alice even mentions in Eclipse that no one has done that before, so who knows how Bella will turn out? But a) the character/story still treats BELLA like she is amazing vs her circumstances being the main driver here and b) it also has this weird tone of like "see anyone could do it with with enough focus and attitude, if they only 'prepared' and chose it before."

But given the circumstances in which everyone else was turned (Alice, Edward, Esme, Rosalie and Emmett to save their lives; Carlisle and Jasper running into a vampire in the wild) that . . . that wasn't an option?

It reminds me of SM talking about how Edward loves Bella more than Rosalie loves Emmett, because Edward chose to keep Bella human yet Rosalie chose to turn Emmett but those were WILDLY different circumstances?! Emmett was actively bleeding out. The choice before Rosalie was not "let him live a human life without vampires" or "turn him," it was "let him die right now" or "turn him."

(And also, Edward makes the same choice Rosalie did when Bella is actively dying, so . . .)

The tone is like "Gosh why didn't you guys just mentally prepare yourself for vampirism?" They . . . they couldn't? How were any of them supposed to have the "right focus and attitude" after the trauma they went through? They weren't waking up a happily married billionaire with their spouse and supportive family at their side like Bella was, they were waking up to an entirely alien existence with strangers--if that. Alice and Carlisle were alone.

But then we get Life and Death where Beau LITERALLY has no time to prepare or choose anything and he is STILL as amazing as Bella was so this vaguely condescending "just have the right focus and attitude!" stuff doesn't even matter. Bella and Beau literally are just amazing at it because SM can't bear to let them become monsters or face monstrous consequences.

The most annoying thing about the whole 'wolves can theoretically be immortal' thing is that it's so clearly JUST for Renessmes sake. It's another I'm a long list of times the wolves are used just for Bella and Edward's narrative rather than a thing in their own right! Like, there has to be at least one wolf who decided to live long enough to see the current pack, hell she even gives us one, Taha Aki was implied to have run off and become a Wolf! And yet! This is never used in any way outside of the renesmee scenario!

Like come on, not even it being part of the angst of 'holy shit I am genuinely Not Human' meyer tries sneaking in here. Like, it is actively weird that they think of themselves as monsters the way they do considering everything, but it's even weirder potential immortality isnt a part of it.

For real, I just don’t see how they are monsters at all. Their whole purpose is to protect people FROM monsters! And they transform into giant wolves, not like, grotesque monstery wolf-men like the Children of the Moon or more Classic werewolves. 

Jacob’s whole “I guess I’m not the right kind of monster for you” thing is just like, sweetie you aren’t even a monster. You don’t have Horror Hunger, you don’t go feral in wolf form, you don’t have a grotesque appearance, you just have a magical ability to take on the shape of an overly large wolf. That’s a shapeshifter, not a monster. 

And yes, word, if she were going to be all “btw they are functionally immortal as long as they keep phasing!” then it should be more relevant than just ‘yay Jake and Nessie can be together forever!’ (which is something literally no one wanted. Team Jacob didn’t want him to imprint on Bella’s half vampire daughter and Team Edward certainly doesn’t want him in E/B’s life forever, either). It would be so cool if Taha Aki were still out there. 

Take Sam, for example. The canon is that he was so freaked out when he phased for the first time it took him two weeks to calm down enough to return to human form. What if instead, Taha Aki or some other shapeshifter who had decided to go full time wolf was out there and found him, explained things to him, and Sam was gone for two weeks not because he couldn’t phase back, but because he lost track of time because he was so amazed by this secret history and magic he was learning from like the OG shapeshifter? 

My favorite explanation of imprinting is that it exists to tie the shifters to mortality. Sam will have to stop phasing to grow old with Emily. Likewise Jared with Kim and Paul with Rachel. Without those ties, maybe more wolves would be tempted and corrupted by the potential of immortality, of superhuman abilities. They’d lose sight of their purpose (protectors) and could veer down a dark path. It’s human nature, right? Power corrupts, and being basically invincible and immortal should be a corrupting force, but the bonds of love and family keep them human so they don’t become like vampires and see themselves above the garden-variety non-shifting humans. Don’t get me wrong, I still don’t like imprinting as a concept and imprinting on children is still something that makes me very uncomfortable no matter how much she’s like “it’s not like that!!!” But imprinting existing to remind shifters of their innate humanity and place in the cycle of life and death makes it almost work in my head--otherwise you’d think a lot more of them would opt out of the mundane human existence to be invincible superheroes forever.

I know it’s been discussed before, but I really don’t think enough gravity is given to how horrible the relationship is between Rosalie and Edward. Like, they legit hate each other and these feelings have continued to compound on each other for centuries. Edward literally sucks the worst, and his existence alone is intrusive because of the mind reading, but if I was Rosalie, I would leave and just visit occasionally. Edward is favored to a gross degree and it’s given him a severe superiority complex and chip on his “holier than thou” shoulder. He risked everyone’s existence for Bella Plain and Tall but gets mad at Rosalie for liking her reflection and having opinions.

I get angry just thinking about these fictional siblings. It might be projection on my part, but I do not understand how this family remains together for more than 10 minutes at a time when there isn’t Bella drama happening. It makes the whole family situation seem even more ridiculous that it already is. Would love your thoughts on this!

I’m of two minds on this, because sometimes I’m like “ugh they are just awful to Rosalie why does she stay and the favoritism to Edward is obnoxious” but other times I convince myself that this isn’t an accurate portrayal of the family dynamics because Bella/Edward/Jacob are unreliable narrators (they all dislike Rosalie, so none of them are giving her the benefit of the doubt) and we have no idea what conversations or reassurances are happening outside of what they choose to tell us. 

So yeah you can read it as pretty awful and mean and the family loves Edward and hates Rosalie, or you can read it as “of course Bella centers Edward and makes it seem like everyone else does, too, but maybe not?” Also it makes a certain sense that Edward is supported the most/favored in this moment because he’s the one Going Through It with this Bella stuff. It’s possible that it’s not usually this blatant and it’s because he’s going through A Lot right now. 

All that said, SM has made it pretty clear that SHE thinks Edward is the best and Rosalie kind of sucks so it’s probably authorial bias coming through. I mean she says that Edward is Carlisle and Esme’s favorite because Edward is the most good of the siblings and extra special. And I mean I get he was with them first so he’d have a special place in their hearts, but with the Power of Compassion and the Power of Love I just don’t think they’d play favorites quite so much (or at least not be so obvious/vocal about it!), because it’s not loving or kind to their other ‘children.’ Esme’s whole Thing is to be the Mom and most moms would be like “oh I can’t choose a favorite I love all my children equally!” but then SM has her be like “Edward’s the best and brightest of us all!” and like is he, though? He’s the only one who knew vegetarianism was an option, was RAISED that way, and still chose to go off and drink human blood. 

I don’t know where I’m going with this other than yeah, the funny sibling rivalry can veer off into “oh they actually hate each other, this is toxic” territory pretty quickly. I prefer to think Rosalie is getting more love and support behind the scenes from Emmett and her ‘parents’ and maybe even Jasper and it’s just Alice and Edward who are so pro-Bella that they are Anti-Rose and they aren’t USUALLY this nasty to her, but that requires a GENEROUS read of canon, tbh. It’s just as easy to think “yikes, get out of there, girl!”

The reason why I can’t get behind the Cullens is because they literally have NO reason to hate the pack. First of all, the Cullens treaded on THEIR land, when hey could’ve simply went ANYWHEREEEE else. These mfs can live under water if they wanted to. Forks is not the only wet and green place in America, and especially in the world. Secondly, the pack literally does not affect them in any way, as opposed to the Cullens, who’s presence affects the entire tribe, especially the ones with the wolf gene. Thirdly, they’re not even fucking werewolves, so you’re argument is invalid from the start.

If not racist intent, what the hell was Stephanie Meyer trying to do? Like has anyone ever asked this woman, face to face, what THE HELL was she thinking about putting this dynamic into her series? By putting in a REAL—not fake—tribe in her book series, changed their history and stories, and made them into werewolves. And THEN added these white ass vampires and created this “rivalry” and forced this treaty. OH but surprise surprise, they’re not even fucking werewolves! SO WHAT WAS THE POINTTTTT.

I am legit upset by the incompetence of her writing. She writes it as if we should dislike Jacob and the pack by writing them as dangerous, aggressive, etc, but then turns around and says, “No no, you shouldn’t hate them. Jacob is actually one of my favorite characters.” THIS WOMAN IS INSANE.

Would the Cullen,s ever renew their wedding vows?

Rosalie and Emmett obviously would; they basically do this every few years with their various weddings.

Edward and Bella . . . . might? I could see them jokingly going to Vegas to have the wedding that Bella originally 'wanted' (rather than Alice's elaborate party planning) or Bella joking that she's kind of sad Emmett DIDN'T get ordained on the internet and officiate and so for one anniversary Edward surprised her with just that.

I don't think Alice/Jasper and Esme/Carlisle are as into the spectacle. Maaaaaybe C/Es could be convinced to 'renew their vows' for their 100th anniversary (which would have been last year or this year depending on just HOW fast you think they got married) but I think Carlisle thinks the idea is lowkey silly because the POINT of vows is that you make them one time and stick to them. He might really Believe in marriage as a spiritual/human institution and might think the renewal thing is kind of tacky or cheapens it. But well, maybe it would be nice to celebrate their love with the whole family they've created; the first time it was just them and Edward.

Likewise Jasper miiiiight be able to be talked into it for a big anniversary, but Alice herself has to want it and I'm not sure that she does. She likes PARTIES for sure, but they seem to have gotten married mostly because Carlisle suggested it, not because either of them have any great emotional or spiritual connection to the human idea of marriage, so renewing their vows is probably not something either of them would be super into. Plus for all Alice's exuberance and extroversion, she's pretty private about her relationship with Jasper. I feel like she enjoys celebrating other people instead of putting herself in the spotlight. I mean she was designed that way on purpose as the Perfect Sister-Friend, but.

If the kings become aware of a crime they will pursue the vampire in question no matter who they may be. Their entire rule is based around their subjects having fear, but most of all respect for the ruling coven. The Volturi has many eyes around the world, but they cannot be everywhere at all times. Vampires follow the laws because they have been advocated for and followed through on no matter what. Innocents will go free in Volterra, but the guilty will meet their appropriate punishment without a shadow of a doubt.

An example is this request that I wrote, here Caius is genuinely upset about the fact he might have to execute Aro if Jane and Alec weren't able to control themselves; because The Volturi does need to follow their own laws, if they did not vampires would have rose against them centuries ago.

I am not of the belief that The Volturi is an overly corrupt organization. They have most definitely had criminals, traitors and people who have toed the line of the law in their ranks before. Luckily, I think they have developed a rather fierce initiation process at this point in time; unlawful behaviours are few and far in between.

A guard committing a crime would be an easier thing to deal with, if they are in the higher guard it will be a bit more of a PR nightmare but manageable. More they would mourn the lost gift and comrade they had grown to trust over centuries of service.

Now, if one of the royals committed a crime? That would disrupt the foundation of the coven in a manner that can be disastrous. There is a fine balance between the kings and queens, disrupt it too much and you have a serious situation on your hands.
