honestly think i think the heatriv books captivate me so deeply BECAUSE they're so bad. there's this specific tension that occurs where reid wants to imply something for trope or plot reasons, but then realizes it's a real life thing that is not exclusively just Sexy, which makes it too complicated for the book, so she pulls it back, often within the same sentence. so you have this absurd whiplash effect where everything is so important and deep and serious and also simultaneously just kidding it's none of those things. and this extends to the big issues like how she treats race and homophobia, but then also it extends down into how she deals with individual character beats like shane's eating disorder which he has until no he doesn't, or ilya being suicidal until he gets that fuckass dog. like okay this sentence is a perfect example:

He would never hurt Shane, he was sure of that, but his own fury was scaring him at the moment.

so metatextually as a romance author you want your love interest to be brooding and dark and powerful and dangerous, but you don't want him to be SCARY scary, and most importantly he's got to be really sad. that all totally tracks. but then within the story, what is ilya supposed to be understanding about himself in that second? he knows he wouldn't hurt shane, but he's still scared he would hurt him, so clearly he ISN'T actually sure of it, but the idea of ilya actually hurting shane isn't Sexy so it has to be immediately negated. so what you're left with is this thing that literally erases itself as it writes itself, with these kind of insane fractured characters who freak the fuck out and then seem to have no understanding of the fact that they just freaked out. and that does compel me. it does.
