I haven’t seen this on my dash so here it is. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill codifying same-sex marriage and it is now going to the Senate where there really is an actual chance of it passing. Sure, there are assholes who won’t support it, but there are Republican senators willing to support it and we need their support to get this passed. If you live in a state with a Republican senator, please call the senate office telling them that as a constituent, you support same-sex marriage and the Respect for Marriage Act.

For clarification: Same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states right now based on the 2015 Supreme Court ruling. But, with the court standing as it is and with Roe being taken down, codifying same-sex marriage in law would mean that the Supreme Court would have a much, MUCH harder time stripping away the right. This is important. Marriage as a legal binding is critical to allowing spouses to visit each other in the hospital, make medical decisions, share assets, adopt and form families, and more. We need TEN Republicans to support the bill, so far there are FIVE likely supporters - we need AT LEAST FIVE MORE.

Just to provide more context: this bill also codifies interracial marriage into law. Currently, that’s protected only by the supreme court case Irving v. Loving.

The reason this bill has a chance at passing is because it was introduced with bipartisan support and passed the house with 25% of republicans voting yes. That’s a slim number of senators, but it could pass the filibuster’s sixty vote requirement.

This is a rare opportunity for democrats to hold republicans to the fire and force them to take a side on popular issues. Interacial marriage has >90% support and same sex marriage has >70% support.

Its’s absolutely insane to me that there is quality educational content out there that is 100% free for the viewer on something as accessible as YouTube. Channels like SciShow, Crash Course, ASAP Science, Khan Academy, TED (and all its associated channels), etc are paving the way for the future of education. For centuries, academic knowledge was only available to the elite, people who could shell out tons and tons of money every year, and largely, it still is. But channels like this, just giving away free content is, or at least can be, the future. Just people helping other people better themselves, and that is beautiful. In a world where it seems that everything is going downhill, this makes me so incredibly happy.

I was at my local thrift store with my stepmom and I was showing her a bunch of cute stuff and when I showed her these cute rainbow handcrafted crochet coasters she looked so uncomfortable- like boarding on appalle. I think people need to tell more kids that they're proud of them for graduating high school. I'm absolutely dead serious, especially now. I can see the graduating high schoolers surrounding me right now are burned out and traumatized and depressed, and they've undoubtedly had a much, much harder time in high school than I ever had, and I had some pretty shitty high school experiences.

I graduated high school with no more acknowledgement than the standard "congrats on surviving another year of school!" And immediately followed by "have you finished all your scholarship applications?" That was fine for me. I knew i wanted to go to college, I was set and ready for it, eager to get out of high school into more challenging courses.

But if I just finished high school after two years of fighting through online courses and no one acknowledged the battles I went through? If I was as burnt out and traumatized as these kids are right now? I'd have never have gone to college.

So for everyone graduating high school, even if you barely scraped by passing: I see you. I'm proud of you. You did such a good job. I wish you success in what you try to do, fortune enough to keep you safe and happy, and health always.

Make sure you say it to every grad you see. Gen Z is working so much fucking harder than we ever had to for that piece of paper.

Bonus round: don’t ask for their major. Ask what their after-high school plans are. Normalize the idea that they might be going into the trades, or just don’t feel college is right for them (right now or ever, doesn’t matter). Let them be excited with you. Heaven knows after the upheaval of the last two years they deserve it.

One thing I’ve always loved about growing up in a small town is that they are SO APPRECIATIVE of their seniors. There’s a graduation parade, each kid gets a banner around town with their senior picture on it, they all get mentioned in the paper. It’s nice.
