Glycon (Γλύκων), a snake god of mid-2nd century created by the Greek prophet Alexander of Abonutichus, echoes the macedonian snake cult of fertility (Olympias often appears as a snake worshipper and priestess) as well as the cult of the healing god Asclepius, he also brings to mind the minoan snake goddess image representing both fertility and gnosis of the occult mysteries. The snake, a powerful symbol was also associated with the orphic religion and the god Phanes. Goddess Athena’s protégé or perhaps son, Ericthonius was also half-man and half-serpent inheriting Athena’s wisdom and skills.
