ANOTHER BANGER OF AN EPISODE. This show is on such a roll and I'm having the best time.
I actually really enjoyed the setup of the episode with the couple being all the calls! It certainly didn't hurt that it was Tia from the plane, whom I totally loved in the opening s8 arc. I did not place her at first but knew she was so familiar, and then when it became clear I thought it was very fun! I am usually ready for calls to be over — I understand the structure of the show but I am always eager to get back to our mains. But I found this structure to be kind of delightful. Wouldn't need to repeat it necessarily all that much, since I think it'll be hard to top the two of them walking out of their exploding house with champagne, not looking back like Cool Guys. But it was pretty delightful. Also I'm still just genuinely tickled by Tia inviting the 118 to the wedding. The worst part about those two breaking up is that I didn't get to see our friends attending out of weird awkward obligation/fascination/moral imperative to be on the scene when someone inevitably gets sliced by the wedding cake knife or something.
MADDIE STORYLINE. MAY STORYLINE. FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY. I still think it took too long but I loooooooved what they did with both of them in this and I look forward to these storylines continuing!
May is so precious and I really love that she's still working on figuring things out, and that even with law she was still trying to continue her mom's legacy. And I love that Athena is so clear that she doesn't need that from May. In a show that has a lot of people with a clear Calling, it's cool to see someone who feels a little more at sea with all of it. Also her saying she's the daughter of a cop and a firefighter GOT me.
The Maddie/Josh stuff! Ouch! First of all, please leave my friend Sue alone, she has already been a victim of a hit and run and now this? But I do think this is a very interesting story arc that was just done really really well. I totally see Sue's reasoning, and it tracks. But I also so get how painful it is for Josh, and how uncomfortable for Maddie, and it's so tricky in the best way. You could see how unhappy Sue was to be doing what she was doing but she's trying to do right by her people, including Josh, and whether or not it's actually the right thing to do it was all so earnest and just soooo delicious to watch. I just felt like everyone knocked it out of the park. Even the little things like Maddie stealing Linda's call and then apologizing without Linda having to tell her why she was upset because these people are longtime coworkers and friends and Maddie IS good for this job and self-awareness like that shows why and how. THIS is the dispatch storyline we deserve. And someone invite me to cocktail hour with Maddie and Sue. I just love them all!
SO MANY WOMEN TALKED TO EACH OTHER IN THIS EPISODE. Honestly it was so so great. We got angst and fun and awkwardness and joy and it was awesomeeeeeee.
Also Maddie running dispatch and Chim being captain? They're too powerful. They rule LA. I'm scared and a little turned on.
And of course, BUCK. MY DARLING, MY LOVE. I'm so worried. I'm so excited. I know this could go a lot of ways but Buck struggling through this after the metric fuckton of trauma that's been piled on top of him the last year/several years/decades...god, it could be SO good. And it is starting with such promise! It is SO in character for Buck to be trying to handle this all on his own and brush off any attempt at help. And Eddie trying to force his way in but also maybe possibly letting himself buy Buck's facade a little bit...man, I'm loving it. It really reminded me of Chim during Maddie's PPD arc, when he admits he wanted to believe she was doing better so badly he let himself miss some signs. Honestly the Madney/Buddie parallels lately have been off the charts. But it also works so well for both characters, because they so deeply want to help their respective Buckleys, but they also have such overdeveloped senses of responsibility for failing their loved ones in the past and it all feels so big and the Buckleys are so good at deflecting and maybe maybe they really are ok, they're so strong, look what they've survived, maybe they can believe them, until until until...DELICIOUS.
Excellent episode. I'm so excited for next week. I am, of course, out of town again. Hopefully this means 9x15 will be incredible. Let my FOMO elevate the next ep to new heights of greatness. I will do this for us all.
