“The truth is, unless you let go, unless you forgive yourself, unless you forgive the situation, unless you realize that the situation is over, you cannot move forward.”

Do you ever think, that soulmates really do last forever? That lifetime after lifetime, two beings meet each other again and again?

I’m telling you elephants are chill motherfuckers. They fucking love being helpful. They once defended a man with heatstroke from a truck that came to rescue him. They knew he was sick, laying against a tree for shade. They were watching over him and petting him, and they threatened to charge the vehicle for coming towards him. Another person passed out, and elephants cried over her and buried her body in a traditional elephant funeral. (Piling branches on her). And were quite spooked when she got up later. And an elephant was helping workers to put logs in holes for a wall. On one hole, the elephant absolutely refused to set the log in, despite being punished and goaded. Turns out there was a sleeping dog in the hole.
There are so many good elephants stories. They will even help zookeepers wash other elephants– literally, a zookeeper can be like “[Name 1], please wash [Name 2]” and he will go wash that elephant correctly. Listen guys. Not only are elephants people, but they’re largely better people than us. I’m 10000% serious.
I just love that the lioness (a fiercely protective species) was 100% on board with it.
“Thanks, Janet, it’s been one hell of a week, you know?”
“i appreciate it, susan. i just need some me-time right now, you know?”

“no more after me”, a mini comic about the now-extinct golden toad. featuring lyrics from deuteronomy 2:10 by the mountain goats
Martha Crump was a biologist who studied the elusive golden toad extensively. They lived only in a four kilometer range in the Costa Rican hills, and spent almost all of their lives underground. However, once a year at the start of the wet season, the male toads would emerge and begin to sing for the females. It was described by Crump as a forest floor full of jewels; hundreds upon thousands of toads in a chorus of sound.
The 1980s saw a sharp decline in population. Whether it was human or climate driven is still unknown, but the mating pairs dwindled drastically. In 1988, Crump witnessed a singular male toad exit a burrow, climb onto a nearby rock, and begin it’s song. When the night was over, the toad descended back underground, alone. In 1989, Crump returned to the area, and again found the singular male. Again it climbed, sang it’s tiny song to a vast and empty jungle, and vanished back underground. It was the last ever sighting of the golden toad. Crump believed it was the same male from the year before.
The golden toad was declared extinct in the early 2000s. The story of the lone male toad helped usher in the species as a hallmark of modern conservation. It is gone, but not forgotten. May we do better with those that are left.

This is why I have this. Even if they can get the lock opened they can’t push the door open. Got it at Lowes for $20.
reblog for that last bit to save a life
If you’re like me and have a large gap under your front door (someone could take a stick and just poke the leaning stick style door jam out), I recommend the Addalock. It’s small, perfect for traveling, and this lock is CRAZY. It’s so simple but the door does not move.
You can’t see it from the other side, either. It also cost about $20, and I can’t recommend it enough. Easy to travel with, too! Great for Air BnBs!
That’s why I have these on my doors. They get drilled into the side and once its flipped over the door nothing is getting it open. Not the door being unlocked nothing, I’ve unlocked the door and pulled and pushed as hard as I could and it didn’t budge. When I go on a trip this is what I use and when I’m home I leave it on too. No one is getting in here.
Okay I know that it is necessary for many but what do you do if you need medical attention and you’re not able to open the door from the inside? Can the fire department get through these at least?
Yes. The fire department can and will break down your door if necessary, it’s one of the reasons they have axes; it’s entirely possible for door frames to melt/expand/seize or otherwise become unopenable during a house fire but the door itself can be hacked down. Or the window. In rare cases, the wall. Firefighters don’t fuck around with collateral damage when lives are at stake.

“I wanted to fly planes on an aircraft carrier, but my father had fought in World War I, and he told me that we’re a family who goes into the army. So I enlisted in the infantry. I wasn’t worried about a thing. I was only eighteen years old. I was too young and too stupid to be afraid. The government sent me to Europe on the Queen Mary. I had two sets of dog tags. One of them designated my religion as ‘Hebrew,’ which I planned on throwing away if I got caught. I was sent to the Battle of the Bulge. When I arrived at my post outside of Luxembourg, I learned that all the officers in my company had been killed, except for one. He assigned me to be an advance scout. It sounds like a glamorous job, but my orders were to walk in front and draw fire so everyone behind me knew there was danger. At one point a shell exploded over my head and my ear started bleeding. When the medics finished bandaging me up, they told me: ‘That will be enough to get you a Purple Heart!’ But I told them to keep it because I knew they’d notify my parents, and I didn’t want them to worry. After I recovered I was transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp. I arrived on my 19th birthday. My new job was to guard the liberated prisoners so the Nazis didn’t come back and kill them. These people were so emaciated from being starved to death. I was helping to bury hundreds of bodies per day. But I couldn’t cry. Because I had be strong for the prisoners. They needed my strength. I would walk around the courtyard at night, and sing a popular Jewish song called ‘My Yiddishe Momme.’ It’s a whole long story about missing your mother, but the lyrics didn’t matter. I’d sing it as loud as I could. Because I wanted everyone to know that a Jewish boy was there to protect them.” #quarantinestories
“After my father graduated from medical school, he decided to open an office in a small agricultural community called Coalinga. Both his parents were Mexican immigrants, and he wanted to give back by working in an underserved community. There’s 16,000 people in that town, these are the people who pick the lettuce, and the cotton, and the fruit. I used to love visiting him at work when I was a kid. I can picture him wearing a lab coat, holding a chart, and people thanking him. They’d bring him bags of almonds and onions. He’d keep saying: ‘De nada, de nada, de nada.’ Dad always looks at the ground when he’s being thanked. That’s how humble he is. He went to Stanford, but he doesn’t even hang his graduation certificate in his office. When he comes home from work, he’ll do the jobs around the house that nobody else wants to do. He cleans out the garage. He washes the dishes. He doesn’t drive an expensive car. He doesn’t wear fancy clothes. His favorite things to wear are T-shirts and sweatshirts from our school athletic teams. Both my sister and I played collegiate sports. And he was our biggest fan. Every weekend for eight years, he’d drive to Los Angeles to watch us compete. And my sister was a rower, so those races were only eight minutes long. Dad would wake up at 3 AM, drive almost five hours, watch an eight minute race, then drive all the way home. And then wash the dishes.” #quarantinestories
