     “What’s with it being plural, you’re a single clone.” He retorted with a painted smirk hidden by the features of his helmet. Oh, how he enjoyed pushing every button available to the clones. His relationship with which was hard to decipher on most days, but irritating them was perhaps one of many favorite pastimes. “God, you did not age well.. Hope I don’t look that bad when I’m your age.” A brief pause as he chuckles, “But hey– we are the same age and I’m lookin’ damn fine.”

Unpleasant memories that comment drew out of his gut notwithstanding, the former arc trooper snorted with a touch of mild annoyance, awarding apparent “younger” of the two with a look that suggested he might have been decapitating him in his mind over and over. “If you call Bontha shit lookin’ fine, then yeah, sure, you’re holonet perfect.”

In a mind’s eye, Fives sometimes thought of the Jedi as agile lothcats, though the General of the 7th Sky Corps in particular had always retained a somewhat... feline-esque demeanor to him. Always poised, always landing on his feet. Even when completely outnumbered, the odds stacked entirely against him, that unabashed confidence inspired his faith in leadership. At least they had a man like that on their side.

Then there were the times that Fives’ heart leaped into his throat, where the General’s confidence alluded to the utter capability of his men to keep him alive. Kenobi often claimed that his tactics were far less reckless than that of his former padawan, though he must not have included the times he goaded the enemy with a fineness only he possessed, or when he offered himself up as a distraction for the greater good. Fives could fully understand where Commander Cody had developed his ramrod-straight visible tension.

Special assignment was where the Arc Troopers really excelled. It wasn’t easy to breach the perimeter of the Separatist facility, but the backdoor plan WAS the plan, and General Kenobi had banked his faith on their aptitude. “Sir,” Fives stood to attention once his brothers had opened the ray-shielded door keeping the Jedi contained. He offered the man’s lightsaber, once previously resting safely from his waist, “Thought you might like to leave.”

For a few fleeting seconds, all Fives could really do was stare at the other man like he was going deep into the root of his past and channeling all the deadass Captain Rex he could muster into a single, fine point of manliness. 

“It’s Fives. Just Fives. Only Fives. Say it with me, it’s really simple.”

Echoes of distant blaster cannon fire loomed around them, the canopy of trees highlighted by the occasional ripple of blooming color as their army hit and missed their marks. Part of him longed to be among them, to haul his falling brothers by the back of their kits and keep them in the fight, keep them moving, keep them alive. But his duty was not often on the front lines like it used to be. 

The 212th and the 501st were brothers in arms for this battle, leaving Fives in very particular company by association. On this planet, the goal was simple -- take the capital and force the enemy to surrender. They had fleets warring around the planet, suppressing the amount of Separatists reinforcements, and boots on the ground to advance toward the planet’s main city. Meanwhile, in the outskirts, deep in the thick of the planet’s wildly dangerous jungle, Fives had been tasked with escorting their commanding General’s young padawan toward a long abandoned Jedi temple in search of documents detailing a huge underground tunneling system, one that just might help them gain the advantage in the fights to come. It was times like these that Fives wished Echo were still around.

“Pretty nice of the Jedi to have helped the people of the planet build their capital city,” Fives grunted out between smacking away bugs the size of his hand and struggling out of low-hanging vines. He hadn’t spent much time in the presence of Obi-Wan’s padawan, but he was tame for now; a bit more punctual and courteous. Not at all like he spoke with General Skywalker or Commander Ahsoka.
